Change is in the air . Spring is a perfect time to bring the outdoors in. Spring flowers, arranged either in one large bunch or in several mini-bouquets placed in nooks throughout the house are not only a visual treat, but emit refreshing springtime scents. Brighten up. Adding seasonal touches to your home can be as easy as painting a piece of furniture, a single wall or the trim in the sunniest room in your home. The best colors for spring are light, clean, refreshing, and natural as opposed to either pale pastels or deep, color-drenched hues. Consider paint colors inspired by nature, such as shamrock, violet, slate and goldenrod. Lighten up. It’s hard to imagine that spring has sprung in a room decked out in velvet or other heavy fabrics. W arm days and spring breezes call out for sheer or lightweight curtains, slipcovers in natural solid-colored or floral fabrics, and decorative pillows that bring splashes of color into the room. It’ s not necessary to replace all of the fabrics in a room to usher in a new season. Sometimes simply changing out pillows and removing warm winter throws is enough. Floor it. Don’t forget to give your floors a spring facelift as well. Substitute lighter cotton, sisal, jute or seagrass rugs in natural shades for the heavy wool rugs that feel so right when the weather turns cold. (Spring and summer are also perfect times to have wool rugs cleaned and/or repaired.)

Re-view. Shifting the arrange-ment of the furniture and decorative pieces in a room can have a major impact on its look and feel. During the cold winter months, it may be comforting to be nestled in a chair that faces a fireplace. But once the weather warms up and the flowers begin to bloom, the best view in the house might well be out the window. Invite spring into your home with a furniture arrangement that is oriented toward a window or other source of natural light. Then sit down and enjoy the view.

Before, your family and friends simply passed through your porch area, now you can all gather there in comfy chairs, sipping thirst-quenching drinks and whiling away the evening in a relaxing style. Bohnne Jones, owner of Decorating Den Interiors, says, “One of today’ s home decorating trends is to ‘bring the outside in and the inside out,’ which makes a front porch cozy and inviting.” From lamps to carpets to curtains, decor items that were once the domain of inside living spaces now find a place in outside design. Before you begin your porch decor process, first take some time to repair any loose railings or floorboards. Y ou want your space to be safe and sturdy before decorating. You might wish to paint your porch wall a fresh, new color that matches or coordinates with your house color and works with your porch space’s theme — Southwestern, coastal, V ictorian and so on. You might choose a neutral sage green, a sunny yellow or another hue that fits your overall plan for the space. With your porch’s raw space ready, here are the top ways to makeover this area: Give furniture a spin. Rather than have sofas and chairs lined up against the back wall facing outward, rearrange them in an L-shape or face-to-face placement that facilitates conversation. Jones says, “Four chairs can be a more flexible selection than a sofa,” because chairs can be moved around more easily and you can create two separate sitting areas. Lay a carpet. Turn your porch space into an outdoor “room” by having an outdoor carpet made of material that is resistant to water and mold. You’re not stuck with AstroTurf or sisal rugs; today’s home decor stores offer outside carpets in decorative patterns and colors. Jones suggests carpets made of 100 percent poly-acrylic yarns, 100 percent polypropylene or olefin, to name a few . Jones says that these carpets are easily hosed off for cleaning. The result is a space-defining foundation that’s comfier to walk on than bare-wood floors. Provide pillows. Setting fluffy pillows and cushions on your chairs and sofas instantly adds comfort and coziness to the space. Shop your home decor store and catalogs for pretty pillow designs in outdoor-friendly materials that also resist mold growth. Choose a small, lumbar-support, outdoor pillow for rocking chairs as well. Pet owners might also set out a dog bed made of outdoor-material, so that Fido can hang out on the porch in comfort. Light it up. In outdoor living decor catalogs, you’ll find outdoor lamps that look very much like tabletop indoor lamps, only they’re safe to use outdoors and are often battery-powered. Place one on an end table to glow alongside citronella candles in safe decanters placed around your space. Go green. Adding green and flowering plants to your porch sitting area is one of the easiest decor tasks possible. Y ou can place large or groups of tall containers on the porch floor , lineup potted plants on a baker’s rack or outdoor shelving unit you’ve set in your space, or hang flowering planters from your porch roof. If your railing is wide and secure enough, you might install window boxes to fill with spring and

summer flowers and greenery to surround your new socializing or relaxation haven. “I’m not a fan of bees and didn’ t want to attract them,” says retiree Joanna Blake. “So I put all green plants in my railing boxes and planters, which added a great range of dark and light green colors to my green ‘room’ theme.” Hang curtains. Install a curtain rod, or use powerful springform curtain rods, to hang colorful or neutral-shaded curtains. This will provide some privacy and add extra visual interest to your porch space. Jones reminds you to be sure that the curtain material, thread and hardware, are made for the outdoors. “Cotton fabric and thread will rot when out in the elements,” says Jones. Lighter fabrics can dance in the breeze, and you can even switch out to new patterns of curtains when fall approaches. Add music. You don’t need to hire a sound system engineer to install surround sound on your porch, like you might have done with your den. If you have an outdoor power outlet, all you need is your iPod and its dock to play your favorite songs while relaxing on your perfect porch oasis.

Trend report

Bathrooms and kitchens are the focal point of most renovations. From simply

adding a new faucet to completely gutting a bathroom, there are many ways to revitalize any home. For those seeking inspiration for their renovation project,

here are the top trends to know:

1- Doubled V anity: Dual sinks and vanities make cramped morning r outines a thing of the past. W ith separate sinks and vanities, homeowners get the individualized spaces and storage they desire in their bathrooms.

2- Radiant Heat: Stepping onto a cold tile floor after a hot shower isn’t the best way to start the day. An easy r emedy is adding radiant electric heating to floors. Some companies install heating mats controlled by a thermostat under tile, stone, laminate and engineered-wood floors.

3- Seeing Gr een: The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) r eports that 24 percent of their designers used a gr een color palette in their clients’ kitchens last year . KraftMaid, a leader in the semi-custom cabinetry industry, offers cabinetry with color finishes, such as Sage, that can add a burst of color to bathroom walls.

4- Added Storage Space: Homeowners ar e looking for ways to decr ease clutter and increase organization in their bathr ooms and kitchens. For someone with dozens of bottles, jars and accessories, a vanity filler pullout creates storage while saving space with its slim vertical design.

5-Walk-In Showers: Homeowners are replacing the conventional tub and shower combinations with walk-in showers. Lar ge glass doors and earth-tone tiles are being combined with luxury showerheads and water jets for a spa-like feel.

6- Satin Nickel Faucets: Satin nickel faucets are becoming increasing popular due to the fact it is very easy to take car e of. The brushed satin finish cleverly hides most scratches and hand prints.

7- Recycled Flooring: With the increased focus on sustainable materials, tiles made fr om recycled ceramic, glass and metal ar e in. Look for companies that use r ecycled materials and sustainable manufacturing practices to cr eate their tiles.

8- A Hint of Natur e: Wood and stone ar e in-demand materials for bathr oom design. Wooden soaking tubs and stone tiles and bathtubs retain heat well and add a natural feel to any bathroom.

9- Fine Furnitur e: The right vanity can transform a mediocre bathroom into a luxurious escape. “Homeowners want their bathr oom cabinetry to r esemble the elaborate pieces in their living room,” says Sarah Reep, dir ector of designer r elations at Kraft Maid Cabinetry . “Standard bathroom cabinets ar e being replaced by cabinetry with rich finishes and detailing.”

10- Quartz Countertops: According to the NKBA, 54 percent of NKBA designers ar e now incorporating quartz into their bathr oom designs, compared with 48 per cent in 2010. The low-maintenance mineral boasts a higher durability against cracks and dents than marble.

Privacy fences are ideal for patios and decks that enable homeowners to decompress from the hustle and bustle of a hard day’s work and to escape from the everyday noises inside the home, e.g., dishwashers, televisions, etc. There are a number of off-the-shelf privacy fence design options to choose from, including wooden and vinyl fences. In addition, evergreen shrubs can serve as privacy fencing; however , they may need a few years of growth to be effective if you buy them too small. A privacy fence also can be useful in smaller backyards or building lots where there is a lack of shrubbery and natural viewing obstructions along the property lines. Moreover , privacy fences can serve dual purposes. For example, they can act as a screen to prevent others from viewing your yard, and they also can function for keeping things in your yard, e.g., children and pets. The height for an off-the-shelf vinyl or wooden privacy fence is typically about 6 feet. However, you can sometimes customize them a bit to extend them higher. In addition, you can come up with your own custom design to achieve your own particular style and height. Often, homeowners who come up

with their own design use a combination of solid material along the lower two-thirds of the fence and lattice on the upper third. In other cases, the entire fence may be constructed out of lattice sandwiched in between fence posts.

When building a wooden privacy fence, it is important to use material that will not rot or decay over time, such as treated lumber or wood types that are naturally rot-resistant. In addition, regardless of the wood type, the wood should be sealed in some way to prevent moisture penetration. If you elect to paint the fence, make sure to paint all sides of the lumber, including freshly cut ends. Moreover, make sure to use noncorrosive fasteners to build it, such as hot-tipped galvanized and stainless steel nails or screws. Using other types of fasteners could very likely result in ugly stain marks showing up on the fence as the fasteners slowly corrode. Even worse, the fence eventually could collapse. Another major concern when building a privacy fence is wind. A large vertically standing solid surface is easily susceptible to wind damage. Consequently, make sure to install the posts at least a couple of feet down into the ground, and preferably set them in concrete. In addition, by using lattice or coming up with a privacy fence design that includes adjacent/staggered vertical lumber pieces that are at angles to each other, wind can flow more easily through the privacy fence and reduce

the risk of it being blown over or damaged. The use of evergreen shrubs is also a great way to create a privacy fence, particularly if you are building a fence around a patio or deck. Though evergreen shrubs can be expensive, using them in a small area limits the damage to the wallet. Whatever your plans and privacy fence design ideas are, you should first check with your local building code enforcement officer to see whether there are any restrictions on installing a fence, even a small privacy fence. T owns and cities frequently have strict rules on their construction, such as their height and set-back requirements. You may also want to check for any local covenants or restrictions that may exist if you live in a housing development. Another advantage of using evergreen shrubs as a privacy fence is that they are typically exempt from local ordinances and covenants for fence construction.

Spring ahead to a luscious lawn

Get going to give your environment a head-start on the season

A A beautiful landscape doesn’t happen on its own. You can help your lawn, trees and shrubs get off to a healthy growing season.

Your landscape is an extension of your home. Master the basics of caring for your lawn and everyone will be happy – you and your yard.

“Trees and shrubs add tremendous appeal to our urban home environments, but to thrive, particularly out of their natural world, they require regular care with added nutrients and protection against invasive pests,” said Ben Hamza, Ph.D., director of technical oper-ations at TruGreen. Keep in mind these tips as you get ready to take care of your yard this spring.

Clean up: New spring growth can be ham-pered if it’ s covered with debris. Clean out dead leaves, branches, trash or anything else that could impair your lawn’s growth.

Prune properly: Corrective pruning of your trees and shrubs can make them not only look better, but help them grow better , too. Don’t top-shear overgrown shrubs or trees – thin them out to preserve their shape. Spring-blooming plants like azaleas, rhododendrons, forsythia and lilacs should only be pruned after they flower.

Put the right plants in the right place: When you’re ready to plant new plants, make sure you put them where they’ll thrive. Be sure you know the light requirements for a new plant. Fences or other structures can restrict air flow, which can interfere with growth. Make sure you have the right type of grass for your lawn. Wherever grass has a hard time grow-ing, plant shady ground covers instead. If you’re considering sod, make sure the temperature is warm enough for grass growth. Firmly pack sod into the soil and water as needed to encourage deep root growth.

Nourish the roots: Spring lawn, tree and shrub roots seek nourishment after the dor -mancy of winter. Make sure your early spring fertilizer has less nitrogen and more phospho-rus to promote strong roots. Be sure to keep fertilizer on target to prevent run-off, and sweep fertilizer granules that may reach pave-ment back onto your lawn.

Get ready to water: Give your lawn a slow, steady watering about once a week, but adjust depending upon rainfall, grass and soil type in your area. Follow the owner’s operating man-ual to take an automated sprinkler system out of hibernation. Ensure sprinkler heads and related water lines are working properly. Make sure the irrigation system covers your landscape efficiently. For example, you can place a one-inch deep, empty food can in the middle of the lawn area to measure the depth of water collected after each watering cycle to ensure uniformity.

Mulch the right way: Mulch can keep soil in place, reduce weeds and retain moisture. But you need to make sure you’re doing it right. When the soil has warmed up, apply three inches of organic mulch to base of shrubs and trees to help conserve soil moisture and to reduce weed pressure. But be mindful not to cover the flare of the tree base in mulch “volcanoes,” which can lead to rot. When your lawn is actively growing, return grass clippings back to the soil for added lawn nutrients and consider using composted mate-rials to nourish plants.

The quick warm-up will bring all kinds of challenges. Crabgrass, for one, is upon us. At soil temps of 58-60 degrees, crabgrass will germinate. As of St. Patrick’ s Day soil temps were at 55, meaning it’ s time for pre-emergent. This is a full month earlier than normal, which means that we may be too late to even catch it if we stick to our normal time line. Using phenological indicators can help us track the timing. Forsythia bloom has always been a great way to time the application of crabgrass applications and gives the best chance to get the better of the tricky crabgrass. If you miss time your crabgrass control don’t worry, there are a number of post emergents that can help you out, but timing is important there too and will cost you. A reminder: if you use a commercial company for your applications, be sure they are N.Y .S.D.E.C. certified and that they provide you a written contract. It’s the law. Watering is also an important factor in doing it right. While the water bill may shock you, if we have a hot dry summer , the cost of repairing a burnt lawn can be even higher , not to mention a summer of looking at brown instead of green. When asked by a customer how long to water , Gregg Fowler, owner of Baldwin-based Legacy Landscaping, always responds, “Do you want the fast answer or the right one?” The right way is to place a number of “catch cans” around the property and

run the system until you collect 1/2” of water . You should water every other day or as long as it takes to apply the ½” of water during the heat of the summer . If you find that there is a large discrepancy in the amount of water collected in the different cans, you may need to have your sprinklers readjusted by a sprinkler company. Using a sprinkler company with a Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor (CLIA) on staff will help guarantee they will be able to help you out. This will not only save you money on water but also save you on reseeding costs. Another way to save on watering is to install smart controllers and rain sensors, says Fowler. These new technologies can save you up to 50 percent on water , while providing a thicker stronger lawn. Newer rain sensors, when matched with smart controllers, will take into account not just rainfall but also temperature, humidity and climate zone. It will then increase and decrease the sprinkler run times to accommodate those conditions. Having a beautiful yard is the goal and with a little

knowledge it can be yours this summer. Legacy Landscaping offers a highly trained and certified staff to help you with all aspects of your landscape and gardening needs. For more information, visitwww.LegacyLandscapeGroup.com or call the office at (516) 608-0818.

AnnualsLooking for first signs of color? Look no further than these wonderful annuals.• Alyssum: Starting in April,

this cascading bounty of tiny flowers offers a sweet aroma that attracts butterflies.

• Dianthus: These vivid flowers also attract butterflies and are often a cottage garden staple.

• Gypsophila: Also known as baby’s breath, these delicate flowers can serve as filler in any landscape. Pink and white varieties are available.

• Impatiens: One of the best-known plants for the garden, these annuals come in scores of colors and can generally tolerate full sun to full shade.

• Larkspur: Belonging to the buttercup family, these flowers bloom in shades of white to violet.

• Pansy: These flowers are some of the earliest spring bloomers, arriving alongside spring bulbs like tulips.

• Petunias: Petunias put on a show of color through the entire season, making them a popular bedding flower.

PerennialsThese plants will come back year after year and offer spring shows.• Cherry blossom: The flowers

that sprout on cherry trees are some of the first signs of spring. Their pink or white buds are often a spectacle, so much so that towns and cities hold cher -ry blossom festivals.

• Columbine: These beautiful blooms attract butterflies and can be a nice part of a garden bed.

• Jacob’s ladder: Variegated foli-age that is dappled with violet-colored flowers can add a sweet smell and visual interest to the garden.

• Primrose: These flowers come in a variety of shades, making them versatile in any garden. They also tend to attract butterflies and hummingbirds.

• Sweet violet: These fragrant flowers are edible as well as attractive. These plants can self-plant, so unless a gardener wants them to spread, they should be kept contained.

Because termites generally do damage while inside of walls or other out-of-sight areas, homeowners often do not know they have an infestation until it’s too late. Detection can be tricky , says Jim Skinner , owner of A&C Pest Management in East Meadow, because termites seem to staying undercover. “When I was growing up in my father’s pest control business,” Skinner explains, “we knew to never plan anything during March through June. This is when termites swarm.” For the last few years termites across the country are not swarming and no one knows why, Skinner says. “Although there are many university studies in the works, there are no findings as of yet. Most people would say that if there are no termites swarming it is a good thing, that they are probably all dead. Unfortunately, the one thing that studies have shown is that they are not dead. They are very much alive and still eating structural members of people’s homes. It is just that most

homeowners don’t know they have an infestation because those termites that would normally swarm (which is how most people realize they have a problem) are not coming out.” A termite mating swarm can consist of 100 to several hundred black insects on average. They usually swarm in one place in a home and will gradually fly to areas where there is light. “It is a spooky sight if you have never seen it before,” says Skinner. “If

you’ve seen this you are one of the lucky ones, since that is the indica-tion to most homeowners of a problem that needs attention.” So if there is no swarm, what is a home-owner to do? Stay vigilant, Skinner advises. “Look all around your home and the founda-tion for signs of termites. Pay particular atten-tion to the structural members. You may have termite damage in your home and not know it. That is why most pest control companies will come out to inspect your home at no charge to find out what is going on.” While the inspector is there, pick his brain to find out if there is anything you can do to reduce your risk of getting termites. Where have all of the termites gone?

Tracking down the mighty pest

Termites, the silent invaders, often go undetected until damage

has occurred.

T ermites have long been the bane of existence for the homeowner . These insects cause billions of dollars in damage every year, according to entomologists.

While you’re trying to find every available reason to be outside this spring, termites ar e doing the exact opposite – trying to worm their way indoors and devour your walls and floors. And they certainly aren’t feasting for free. “Termites have an insatiable appetite for cellulose found in wood, eating 24-hours a day, seven days a week. They cause serious and costly damage and can compr omise the structural stability of a home,” said Missy Henriksen, vice pr esident of public af fairs for the National Pest Management Association (NPMA). “NPMA advises homeowners to have their homes inspected annually.” `Termite infestations that ar e left untreated can quickly damage your home’ s structural integrity. To make matters worse, damages caused by wood-destr oying insects, such as termites, ar e typically not cover ed by homeowners’ insurance policies – leaving you to foot the bill. The “silent destr oyers” and their saw-toothed jaws can significantly r educe the long-term pr operty value and financial investment of a house. The NPMA estimates that termites cause at least $5 billion in property losses each year in the U.S. Use this checklist to put a stop to termite infestation:√ Inspect the perimeter of a home for r otting

wood, mud tubes or a visible termite presence. √ Pay particular attention to doors and

windowsills, looking for shed wings.√ Avoid water accumulation near a home’ s

foundation by diverting water away with downspouts and gutters.

√ Never bury wood scraps in the yar d. If your home is newly built, r emove any r emaining grade stakes or tree stumps on your property.

√ Maintain a one-inch gap between soil and wood portions of a building.

√ Keep mulch at least 15 inches fr om the foundation.

√ Do not stack firewood or lumber near home, and inspect it car efully before bringing indoors.

If you suspect you have an infestation, contact a licensed pest pr ofessional. Termites cannot be controlled on your own.

Everything from changing light bulbs to programming thermostats can be easily done by homeowners, experts say . Replace a simple part on an appliance, such as a burned-out stove element. Install fresh batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Check ground fault circuit interrupters. A professional may be needed to tackle some repairs, but in most cases, armed with a checklist and a pair of binoculars (to avoid climbing on the roof), you can save time and money by doing the initial inspection yourself. With a clipboard in hand, you’ll want to eye the exterior of your home, basement or crawlspace for: • Sidewalk, driveway, chimney and foundation cracks, mold

or mildew • Malfunctioning sump pumps • Clogged vent caps • Loose or cracked deck boards or patio blocks • Debris-filled gutters and downspouts • Loose shingles and siding • Gaps in window caulking, dirty windows and broken

windowpanes Vacuuming or spray cleaners can remove a winter’s worth of dirt and dust accumulating inside your home on registers, return ducts, lampshades, lighting fixtures, windowsills and windowpanes. Also, thoroughly cleanse range hoods and kitchen vents of grease and dirt. Extend some small changes to in a decorative capacity as well. Think about draping furniture with lightweight slipcovers; taking down heavy winter drapes and replacing them with sheer fabric window treatments; or even applying a fresh coat of paint that captures the feel of a seaside vacation. Such changes can bring that spring-summer mood indoors, says designer Sally Morse, director of Creative Services for Hunter Douglas. One of the easiest small changes involves switching incandescent light bulbs to energy-efficient compact fluorescents. It’ s something more and more homeowners are doing, according to a recent Harris Interactive Survey commissioned by Emerson, a global technology company . Ironically, one of the simplest small steps homeowners overlook is programming their home’s existing thermostat to reflect seasonal changes, says Karl

Zellmer, vice president of Emerson Climate Technologies’ air conditioning division. “While more than 25 million homeowners have programmable thermostats in their homes, less than 50 percent are actually program-ming them,” says Zellmer. “If you already have a program-mable thermostat installed, the only investment needed is about 15 minutes for the ini-tial programming and setup. If you don’t have a program-mable thermostat, they are relatively inexpensive and quick to install. At a mini-mum, with your existing thermostat, change your set point a few degrees and enjoy the reduced energy consumption.” Air filters should be changed monthly, says Zellmer, “but that also depends on many factors, including what type of unit you have and whether people in your home have seasonal allergies, etc. Small things like re-caulking windows and adding insulation, curtains and awnings also can help.” Add refrigerator gaskets to your spring/summer repair list, suggests hone repair expert Steve Ash. He recommends coating the gasket – that plastic strip that forms a seal between the fridge and doors – with a thin film of V aseline. “This will help them stay elastic and form a better seal.” Replacing worn dishwasher racks and non-working stove elements are easy tasks to check off your list. “The two most common replacement parts purchased for dishwashers are upper or lower racks,” Ash says. “Lower racks are easier to replace, as they normally just roll out. Replacing the top rack is simple, too, but requires just a few more minutes of your time

to remove the rack stops.” And if your stovetop isn’ t heating properly , the most common solution is to replace the defective surface element, or burner, Ash notes. “Ranges built in the last 30 years or so normally have plug-in surface elements, so the repair is very straightforward. Once you disconnect the power, simply lift and pull the defective element from its receptacle and slide in the new one.” T erminals at the end of old elements should be inspected, he says. “If they show signs of arcing, overheating or corrosion, then the receptacle should be replaced, as well.”

Knowledgeable homeowners select outdoor lighting systems that use a series of energy-efficient, low-voltage lights strategically placed around a home. Positioning lights on the ground to shine up onto homes or landscaping is called “uplighting.” Lights should be positioned no more than four feet away from the area they are lighting and positioned less than 30 degrees from vertical. This approach provides security because lights are placed in areas where an intruder might hide. Uplighting also allows homeowners to highlight the most attractive features of a home, such as the texture of brick or stucco or interesting architectural details. “T en years ago, virtually no one was doing outdoor lighting in a pleasing, effective manner,” said Winston Edwards, a lighting specialist with Outdoor Lighting Perspectives. “T oday, the practice of outdoor lighting is more sophisticated and effective, resulting in systems that not only are practical but also add to the beauty of a home as seen at night.”

The most common error that homeowners make with out-door lighting is emphasizing the use of floodlights. While flood-lights may give a sense of well-being, they actually can create safety and security problems, limiting the ability to see intruders or blinding visitors who risk a fall. Floodlights with 500 watts of power also are unflattering to most home exteriors, making it difficult to appreciate texture or fine details. In addition to lighting home exteriors, low-voltage outdoor lighting also is ideal for landscaping, allowing homeowners to accent ornamental shrubs and trees. “For patios, consider using path lights around the perimeter, which will reflect light onto the patio,” Edwards said. “W ith decks, use lights with a shielded light source underneath the handrails. These lights provide just the right light for conversation and are much more pleasant than typical deck lighting with a bright light shining from the side of a home.” The newest generation of outdoor lights uses halogen bulbs,

which are energy-efficient and brighter than traditional incandescent lights. Paired with stainless-steel sockets, quality outdoor lights provide years of carefree operation. “When it comes to creating beautiful outdoor lighting, homeowners should look for interesting architectural elements and distinctive landscaping, and they should never place lights so that anyone is looking directly into a bulb,” Edwards said. “Follow these basic principles, and outdoor lighting will be an investment that you, and your neighbors, will enjoy for years to come.”

Because termites generally do damage while inside of walls or other out-of-sight areas, homeowners often do not know they have an infestation until it’s too late. Detection can be tricky, says Jim Skinner, owner of A&C Pest Management in East Meadow , because termites seem to staying undercover. “When I was growing up in my father’ s pest control business,” Skinner explains, “we knew to never plan anything during March through June. It is just that most hom-eowners don’t know they have an infestation because those termites that would normally swarm (which is how most people realize they have a problem) are not coming out.” A termite mating swarm can consist of 100 to several hundred black insects on average. They usually swarm in one place in a home and will gradually fly to areas where there is light. “It is a spooky sight if you have never seen it before,” says Skinner. “If you’ve seen this you are one of the lucky ones, since that is the indication to most homeowners of a problem that needs attention.” So if there is no swarm, what is a home-owner to do? Stay vigilant, Skinner advises. “Look all around your home and the founda-tion for signs of termites. Pay particular atten-tion to the structural members. You may have termite damage in your home and not know it. That is why most pest control companies will come out to inspect your home at no charge to find out what is going on.” While the inspector is there, pick his brain to find out if there is anything you can do to reduce your risk of getting termites. Where have all of the termites gone?

Tracking down the mighty pest

Termites, the silent invaders, often go undetected until damage has occurred.

Halt spring

TERMITEinfestations

T ermites have long been the baneof existence for the homeowner. These insects cause billions ofdollars in damage every year,

according to entomologists.

Differentiating termites from cer-tain types of ants can be confusing, leaving homeown-ers to guess which unwanted intruder is around the house and how to

handle these potentially harmful houseguests. Understand the difference between the two by learning the characteristics of each type of pest. Ants have elbowed antenna, a narrow waist-

line and two pairs of wings. The fr ont wings will be much longer than the back wings. Termites, on the other hand, have straight, beaded antennae, a broad waistline, and two pairs of wings that ar e equal in size. Both ants and termites have the potential to swarm. This is a method of dispersal to start new colonies elsewhere. Whatever the problem, it is best to consult an exterminator who can guide you on the most effective solutions before damage becomes extensive.

A s this spring barrels in, let’s not get caught unprepared. It seems as if we missed this winter all together, but let’s make sure this summer doesn’t end up being a game of catch-up.
