Retort Information (continued):Average cremation time—Approximately 100 pounds/hourMaximum room temperature next to retort—By code, the retort cannot

increase ambient room temperature by more than 60 degrees. B&L retorts use approximately 2500 cubic feet of air per minute and require an air louver of at least 24” square to be installed in an outside wall of the retort room. This amount of air volume typically keeps the room at ambient temperature.

Cool down time—Cool down time can vary significantly depending on how many cremations have been carried out and how long those cremations lasted, but 15-30 minutes is typical.

Page 6: Hours of Operation - Granicus

Retort Information (continued):Overheating Risk—B&L is the only manufacturer utilizing a fully automatic

system based on the temperature of the equipment. As the temperature increases, the system adjusts to provide the correct amount of air and fuel to prevent overheating while constantly monitoring and regulating itself. Additionally, a manual override allows the operator to control the system with the flip of a switch.

Stack Construction—B&L stacks are made of steel plate and are fully lined with 3” of insulating castable material capable of withstanding temperature in excess of 2500 degrees. Retort stacks will not catch fire like fireplaces since no creosote is present.

Concern:“Smoke from a tall smokestack will cause a haze in the general vicinity.”

Resolution:Due to the internal afterburner present in our cremator, NO VISIBLE SMOKE will be

emitted from the stack which will only be 3’-4’ above the roof line.

Page 13: Hours of Operation - Granicus

Concern:“The whole area is going to smell like burning animals.”

Resolution:VOCs emitted from our crematory will be extremely low.

Concern:“It’s going to sound like a jet engine whenever the crematory is turned on.”

Resolution:The crematory from B&L produces around 55 decibels which is far lower than many

other retorts in the industry.

Concern:“I can only imagine the kind of eye-sore that a crematory will be in the neighborhood.”

Resolution:Aspen Pet Cremation is committed to being an attractive addition to the community

through:

•Asphalting the current rock driveway per city plating mandate

•Establishing a partnership with Tapis Associates, an experienced Landscape

Architectural Consulting firm, to redesign the landscape

•Upgrading/installing perimeter fencing

Concern:“Will there be flames or a glowing smoke stack visible after dark?”

Resolution:No. Our crematory has a very large internal afterburning area that ensures that all

gases are fully combusted prior to exiting the stack, leaving heat waves as the only

visible exhaust. Additionally, the stack cooling system prevents the refractory liner

from becoming hot enough to cause a glow or to pose any type of fire danger.

Page 23: Hours of Operation - Granicus

Concern:“I don’t want to see animal corpses when I drive by. There is also a school across the

street and I don’t want those kids to see that while they’re running on the track.”

Resolution:The company truck that will transport animals to the crematorium will have a cover

over the truck bed to obscure the sight of any pet remains. Additionally, any unloading

of animal remains will take place inside the shop that is located at the rear of the

building.

Concern:“Are the pet ashes just going to be dumped in the trash?”

Resolution:Two cremation options will exist for our clients, a private cremation or a simple

cremation. Those that choose a private cremation will have their pet’s ashes returned

to them either in an urn that we carry or in any other container they prefer. Alternately,

following a simple cremation, the cremains will be scattered on a 50-acre agricultural

lot east of the city in rural Jackson County.

Page 42: Hours of Operation - Granicus

Concern:“A crematory has no business being anywhere near a residential area.”

Resolution:Aspen Pet Cremation is applying to be located in an area that is zoned Industrial, not

Residential. Furthermore, as the facts have clearly shown, there are no aspects to

the pet cremation industry that make a close proximity to a residential area prohibitive

or even problematic.

Concern:“The smoke from a crematorium contains mercury.”

Resolution:Trace amounts of mercury are found in some dental fillings (though this is becoming

less common) but are not present in animal remains.

Page 48: Hours of Operation - Granicus

Concern:“A crematorium will dramatically increase traffic on NE Delta School Road.”

Resolution:Whether a business or a residence is located at 993 NE Delta School Road the traffic

on the street will naturally increase. However, we project that approximately 80% of

our business will result from picking-up animal remains and then delivering them to

the office with only 20% of our customers driving to our location. We therefore feel

confident that our business will not create an excessive increase in traffic and will

very likely go unnoticed.

Page 49: Hours of Operation - Granicus

Concern:“A crematorium belongs in a warehouse. The building at 993 NE Delta School Road

is too small for such a business.”

Resolution:Precious Memories Pet Cemetery and Crematory has been in business since 1989

and operates a very successful business, growing from one crematory to now three

that often run simultaneously. Their three machines are housed in a space of

approximately 15 square feet with a 10-foot ceiling, making a total of 2250 cubic feet.

Our single crematory will occupy a space 24.5’ x 53’ with a 16’ ceiling, making a total

of 20,776 cubic feet.
