Hot List In Living Colour At Eurocucina 2010 kitchen appliance and design show in Milan, Italy, Smeg debuted its new line of high-end ovens and hobs designed by minimalist designer Marc Newson. Known for his biomorphism style and his beautiful ergonomic designs, Newson is the first non-Italian designer to work with the company and is also designing a line of refrigerators for Smeg as well. Newson says, “I observed that there are a lot of things that relate to the past, materials and finishes you don’t see that often in these kinds of appliances on the market. But more importantly than the colour is the enamel; it’s not paint. Enamel is part of the core business and history of Smeg and I wanted to adhere to that philosophy.” Along with a range of cheerful colours including pale blue, bright orange, off white, and black, the ovens also appear to utilise a touch screen with a digital readout for temperature and time. These multifunction 60-cm ovens offer pyrolitic feature for easy cleaning and a myriad of features to cook, grill, roast and bake. On the other hand, the gas hobs offer cast iron stands, intuitive control dials and directional flame feature to transfer heat fully to the pot, and also come in seven chromatic enamel finishes that are retro inspired. Newson has certainly underpinned Smeg’s philosophy “technology with style”, and it’s no wonder his hobs and ovens won him Wallpaper Magazine’s “Design Awards 2009”.
