IN THIS ISSUE HOT OFF THE PRESS! The summer of 2016 was typical of most summers in that print production was, for many firms, slow. Adding to this was the fact that summer came “early” to many firms as they noticed the slow down starting in the spring. In my recent visits with members, I am happy to report that busy is once again picking up (although it can always be better). Let’s look forward to a successful year! Speaking of success, 2017 marks the tenth anniversary of the Manitoba Print Industry Association. The MPIA was incorporated in November 2007 by a group of industry members who realized more could be accomplished as a group than on their own. Over the past ten years, the MPIA has redeveloped high school and post- secondary print curriculum, delivered over 50 school presentations, attended more than 20 career fairs and facilitated training to over 1500 industry participants! In addition, we have established a strong partnership with the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology, assisting in the procurement of state of the art printing equipment and supporting the development of, and the soon to be delivered, “Print Leadership Skills for New Supervisors”. Of course, all this would not be possible without the support of our government funders and we thank them immensely. Over the upcoming year, we hope to celebrate the past decade and the MPIA accomplishments, networks and partnerships. If you would like to join the MPIA 2017 Planning Committee, please give us a call at the MPIA office. We are always looking for ideas and input. MPIA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

In June 2015, leaders from Manitoba’s print industry took part in an industry engagement session at MITT. Leaders spoke of the imminent skill shortage looming in front line leadership. “Printers need new workers to think like leaders –

in all positions.” The new program “Print Leadership Skills for New Supervisors”, will help employees master the basics and more, with curriculum based on industry best practices and taught by industry itself.

Watch in the new year, for more information on this exciting program!
