OUR SPINS LEADERS THIS MONTH bothemphasize composition and smart, crisp

ensemble arrangements. But while pianistFalkner Evans showcases mostly his own com-positions and expands his working trio byadding horns for the first time on record, drum-mer Ralph Peterson balances his own tuneswith those from (or associated with) two leg-endary Newark musicians.

Credited to a group called Ralph Peterson'sUnity Project, Outer Reaches (Onyx) features aband that duplicates the instrumentation ofNewark organist Larry Young's landmark mid-1960's Unity LP and includes four pieces fromthat album, including three written by Newarktrumpeter Woody Shaw, as well as TheloniousMonk's "Monk's Dream." Joining Peterson is ris-ing B3 organ ace Pat Bianchi and, in the tradi-tion of such mentoring drummer-leaders as ArtBlakey and Max Roach, a pair of up-and-coming20-somethings: trumpeter Josh Evans and tenorsaxophonist Jovan Alexandre. Also appearingon two of the dozen tracks is electric guitaristDavid Fiuczynski.

Peterson is a proactive leader, riding theapex of the beat and keeping a constant roilingbed of sparks and licking flames beneath theensembles and soloists, spurring them on.Shaw's "The Moontrane" jumps off the blocks toopen the album, the two horns and organ light-ing up the proceedings with glittering solos.Quicksilver precision marks the title tune, abop-tempo Peterson original marked by spiritedfours traded among horns and drums. The twoyoung men also give an extra charge to Shaw's"Zoltan" with their tandem/polyphonic soloingover martial beats laid down by the leader. Like"The Moontrane" and "Zoltan," Shaw's "BeyondAll Limits" appeared on the original Unity. Here, Peterson kicks it up to flag-waver tempo, eliciting burbling organ lines from Bianchi andlickety-split, rippling runs from trumpeterEvans, who has a chance to display his morelyrical self on Shaw's waltz, "Katrina Ballerina."Tenor saxophonist Alexandre gets to showcasehis own tender personality and warm tone onthe leader's ballad, "On My Side." Organ anddrums duet on "Monk's Dream" and, withPeterson showing off his own trumpet chops(usually reserved for jam sessions) by overdub-bing, on the carol "We Three Kings." AnotherLarry Young group, the Lifetime trio co-led withdrummer Tony Williams, is remembered with atune by its other member, guitarist JohnMcLaughlin, in a similar trio, with guitaristFiuczynski sparking a fusion feel to end the CDon a torrid note.

Falkner Evans' The Point Of The Moon(CAP) is an expanded showcase for pianist-com-poser Evans' works, adding a front line of RonHorton's trumpet and Greg Tardy's tenor sax tothe leader's trio with bassist Belden Bullock anddrummer Matt Wilson. Already notable in a trioformat, Evans' distinctive compositions - hedescribes them as "deep simple"- stand out givenfull quintet arrangements. The CD opens byoffering a teasing taste of the fuller approach asthe horns flesh out "Altered Soul," a tripartitetheme, but then gives way to the composer'spiano for the solo section. The tables turn on thesinuously sensual "Drawing In" as first tenorsax, then bass and finally trumpet (Horton in amesmerizing solo) emerge as soloists. Theappealing heartbeat tempo and unusual phras-ing of "Dorsoduro" finds trumpet lead shadowedby tenor sax, with Tardy's expressively sinewytenor and the leader's deft piano featured. Turn-on-a-dime phrases and pointillist stop-startsenliven the boppish "Cheer Up," the album's oneway uptempo number.

Drummer Wilson's ability to invigorate moreexotic rhythms is exploited on the album's twostandards. Jobim's "O Grande Amor" becomes asurprisingly sprightly samba propelled by his brushes; and Alec Wilder's "While We'reYoung" is bedecked with odd accents, yet stillretains its waltz time. Evans' diversity as a

BEN WOLFE DIZZY'S / APRIL 19Many talented musicians have come through Wynton Marsalis' bands and his JALCO,especially those in rhythm sections. Among the best is bassist Ben Wolfe, who's alsoworked with singer-pianists Harry Connick Jr. and Diana Krall. However, at this gigWolfe won't just be anchoring the pulse. He'll be helming a quintet - with MarcusStrickland, sax; Eddie Henderson, trumpet; Luis Perdomo, piano; and GregoryHutchinson, drums - as both leader and composer-arranger. It's in that last role thathe stands out on the 2010 CD, Ben Wolfe Quintet Live at Smalls (Smalls Live), abrawny outing enhanced by Wolfe pieces that can be cannily and wittily Monk-like("Unjust" and "Double Czech"), suave ("I'll Know You More") or soulful ("For the GreatSonny Clark"). He also gigs at Smalls on April 14. GK

JUNKO ONISHI IRIDIUM / APRIL 8 AND 9There's nothing remotely "baroque" about pianist Onishi's latest CD, Baroque (Verve),except perhaps for its title tune, a clever rococo-ish reworking of the Eubie Blakechestnut, "Memories Of You." The album, which is also enriched by the presence ofNicholas Payton, Wycliffe Gordon and James Carter, is her first after a decade-longrecording layoff and serves to validate her stature as a keyboardist steadfast in thebebop tradition. Along with several of her own compositions, she thoughtfully reimag-ines pieces associated with Ellington, Monk and Mingus. For these two nights inIridium's congenial confines, she'll pare things down to quartet size: her piano,Dwayne Burno's bass, Gregory Hutchinson's drums and Carter, who'll likely bringalong several of the saxophones he's mastered. PB

RUDRESH MAHANTHAPPACORNELIA STREET CAFÉ / APRIL 8 Largely on the strength of last year's CD Apex, included on numerous Best-of-2010lists, alto saxophonist Mahanthappa is currently riding a wave of critical acclaim. He'sbusy, too, collaborating recently with Jack DeJohnette and juggling multiple projectsof his own, all of which are outlined on his website. Why, today's mail brought yetanother invigorating new recording called MSG, on which he heads a trio bearing thatname. But this evening on Cornelia St. - and the following night at the Jazz Gallery -will serve to debut Gamak, a group also featuring guitarist David Fiuczynski, bassistFrançois Moutin and drummer Dan Weiss. Rudresh calls this his "reinvented quartet"because he's substituted a guitar voice for that of the piano heard in its earlierincarnation. PB

JAMES CARTERBLUE NOTE / APRIL 26-MAY 1In Robert Altman's film Kansas City James Carter played a swaggering, big-tonedtenor saxophonist on the model of Herschel Evans or Ben Webster with all the author-ity of a method actor. As much influenced by R&B and swing as by post-bop and avantgarde jazz, Carter is a flamboyant extrovert of the saxophones - he plays them all, from top to bottom, as well as bass clarinet and flute - so the news that he's joined theWorld Saxophone Quartet suggests a delicious battle of egos with David Murray. Atthis gig, leading his organ trio, he'll probably stick mostly to tenor and baritone sax.Adding to the forthright intensity will be his guests for the week: trumpeter NicholasPayton and electric guitarist James "Blood" Ulmer. GK

JEREMY PELTJAZZ STANDARD / APRIL 5 AND 6At some indeterminate point several years back, Pelt clearly passed from the RisingYoung Star category into that of Trumpet Master, very much in the lineage of LeeMorgan, Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw. His latest album, The Talented Mr. Pelt(High Note) offers further proof of his stature and maturity. In fact, we'd venture tosay it exhibits much the same mellowness and quiet intensity of Herbie Hancock'soriginal Maiden Voyage album. The compositions (most penned by the leader) aren'tmere throwaways; and solos by tenorist J.D. Allen and pianist Danny Grissettenhance the overall excellence. For these two evenings, Peter Washington (bass) andDarrell Green (drums) complete Jeremy's quintet. PB

ALEX GRAHAMSMALLS / APRIL 29 AND 30A New Yorker for years, Graham relocated to the Detroit area, where he's raising ayoung family, teaching at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti and finally (hiswords here) "making some money." He's returning, though, for two nights at Smalls tolead a quartet that includes pianist Whitney Ashe, bassist Paul Sikivie and drummerLawrence Leathers. His tone, approach and brio on the horn will remind many of PhilWoods. Hopefully, they'll search out Graham's latest CD, Brand New (Origin), a sexteteffort benefiting from participation by Jim Rotondi, Steve Davis and David Hazeltine.Besides his acute bebop chops (e.g. a rouser called "Rocket Science"), Alex evinces a qui-eter, more soulful side on "Skylark" and "Save Your Love For Me." PB

Gulnara Khamatova

MARTIAL SOLALVILLAGE VANGUARD / APRIL 12 -17"Playing with Martial," Lee Konitz told me in 2007, "is like playing with a symphonyorchestra. He's a complete musical virtuoso." That year Solal appeared as a solo artistat this same venue (the results can be heard on Martial Solal - Live at the VillageVanguard on Cam Jazz); but for this gig he's bringing along bassist Francois Moutin. "Ireally love playing in duos", says Solal. "For the piano player it's a different challenge...It can be a very interesting way of making music with another person. Solo and duetare the most difficult settings." Algerian-born Solal, 83, is among the greatest jazzpianists, equally accomplished as solo player and big band leader, and an adventurouscollaborator whose musical partners have included Dave Douglas and Wayne Shorteras well as Konitz. GK

JARED GOLDBAR NEXT DOOR / APRIL 2While some purists disdain organ jazz as too reminiscent of sounds traditionally heardat roller rinks, others of us find supreme joy in hearing (and yes, feeling, in the pits ofour stomachs) a great Hammond B3 practitioner at work. Gold is among the best oftoday's young organists, whether he's piloting a real B3 or one of its wholly electronicdescendents. That's borne out by three recent CDs for the hip Posi-Tone label, thenewest being Out Of Line. With him will be guitarist Ed Cherry and drummerMcClenty Hunter. In fact, this MacDougal St. gig is just one of three Village appear-ances by Jared this month. He'll also shake things up at Fat Cat on April 1 and atSmalls on April 12. PB

ANTHONY WILSONMETROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART / APRIL 10Two sides, but definitely not all sides, of the multi-faceted guitarist/composer AnthonyWilson will be showcased this month. At the Met, he'll premiere his new suite for gui-tar quartet, The 4-Seasons, in a presentation also spotlighting fellow plectorists ChicoPinheiro, Steve Cardenas and Julian Lage. Then at Smalls on April 14, he'll lead hisnonet, a unit more nimble and supple than the really big bands led by his father, thepioneering composer-arranger Gerald Wilson, wherein he also plays. Wilson's creativeversatility may be best displayed on his latest CD, Camp Belo (Goat Hill), featuring tenof his originals recorded in Sao Paulo with a pianist, bassist and drummer. But noth-ing is "typically" Brazilian, and Wilson ranges from electric to acoustic, jazz to countryfinger picking. GK

BAND OF BONESZINC BAR / APRIL 13This may well be the best big band you've never heard about. While Slide Hampton'sWorld of Trombones group featured a panoply of trombonists familiar to jazz audiences,Dave Chamberlain and his eight slippery horn compatriots are far from household jazznames - Band of Bones is analogous to a no-name team that wins a championship. Butthese seven trombonists and two bass trombonists, plus piano, bass, drums and per-cussion, are clearly winners, as a listen to the new, self-produced CD, Band of BonesPresented by Dave Chamberlain, attests. They are all master ensemble players - afterall, trombonists have to be - fashioning colorful sonorities and controlled dynam-ics, but also surprisingly creative and stylistically diverse soloists. J.J. and Kaiwould approve. GK

TERENCE BLANCHARDMCARTER THEATRE / APRIL 8This five-time Grammy Award-winning hornman from New Orleans began playingpiano at age five. Having heard a band visiting his elementary school a few yearslater, he added trumpet. After graduating from Rutgers, Terence was booked totour as part of a Lionel Hampton group. Then came a two-year stint with ArtBlakey's Jazz Messengers band, where he served ably as Wynton Marsalis' replace-ment. After leaving Blakey, he teamed up with alto saxophonist Donald Harrison,a Crescent City classmate (and fellow Blakey U. alum) to co-lead a band. To jump-start his own solo career, Terence relocated to New York and soon met Spike Lee,for whom he began doing the film-scoring work that's won him such acclaim. At theMcCarter, Terence’s quintet will play selections from his latest Concord Jazz CD,Choices, which also features spoken word segments voiced by Cornel West.

KEVIN EUBANKSCAPE MAY FESTIVAL / APRIL 8 Thanks to his longtime nightly presence on Jay Leno's show, guitarist Eubanks'face is as familiar to the general public as that as any of any living jazz player, although that gig offered him few chances to display his prodigious chops. Born intoa Philly family full of musical talent (trumpeter Duane and trombonist Robin arehis brothers - and Ray Bryant is his uncle), Kevin studied at Berklee, then workedin bands led by Messrs. Tyner, Blakey, Haynes and Holland. He's rightfully proudof the positive critical reception accorded his recent Mack Avenue CD, Zen Food, which effectively showcases his instrumental mastery. "I think it's a wonderfulthing to acknowledge music as being food for your soul," he's said. True, true.

DAN LEVINSONSHANGHAI JAZZ / APRIL 6Maybe you've heard this reedman playing with Vince Giordano's Nighthawks out-fit, where he shines on both clarinet and C-melody saxophone. Dan's online cur-riculum vitae also lists no fewer than seven other ensembles that he currentlyfronts, all focusing on swing styles typical of the 20s and 30s. An ardent Goodmandevotee, his tributes to Benny have won him numerous critical accolades. But he'sproven his adaptability by backing other headliners with totally different approach-es - Wynton Marsalis and Mel Tormé among them. We look forward to catching himwith the threesome he'll bring into Shanghai Jazz, where his partners will bepianist Ehud Asherie and drummer Kevin Dorn. Copacetic indeed!

NANCY WILSONBERGEN P.A.C. / APRIL 21A song-stylist who's affectionately known among fellow musicians as "Fancy MissNancy," Ms. Wilson's diverse repertoire includes jazz, blues, show tunes and popballads. By age four, this Ohio native knew that she wanted to be a singer. Her pro-fessional career really began at fifteen when she won a Columbus talent contestthat led to a twice-weekly television program. In 1959, Nancy moved to New YorkCity determined, she recalls, to land a contract with Capitol Records. Within fourweeks, she'd nabbed a steady gig at The Blue Morocco. Not long afterward, Capitolsigned her. Her 1962 debut LP, Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley, remains a clas-sic, with tracks like "Save Your Love For Me" and "The Masquerade Is Over" justas compelling as ever. After fifty years in the music biz, TV and radio, she's stillwooing audiences by doing what she loves to do.

ALTHOUGH BROOKLYN NATIVE STEVEKuhn, who's recorded over fifty albums as a

leader and appeared as a sideman with numer-ous jazz greats, tends to focus on the future, hisresumé is rich with jazz world tales.

"My father played jazz records when I was ababy," he recalls, "and I responded viscerally.Every morning I'd go to the Victrola and put on78s. My parents saw that I had some talent andlearned I had absolute pitch. I started piano atage five and had different teachers. In Boston,we were told about Margaret Chaloff, who spe-cialized in the Russian school of keyboard tech-nique. Her son was [baritone saxophonist] SergeChaloff and she had a great love for jazz, thoughher forté was the classical repertoire. She knewDizzy and Charlie Parker, who'd visit her when-ever they came to Boston. I'd been taught certainways of playing and she had to undo a lot of myhabits, so it was like starting from scratch. Sheended up being like a surrogate mother, teacherand guru during those years I studied with her."

At thirteen, Kuhn was playing with profes-sional jazz musicians. "Serge was workingaround Boston and she'd mentioned me to him,so I wound up playing with him. Often, it was atrio: Serge with just drums and piano. I learnedabout not overcompensating for the absent bass, comping behind a soloist, tunes and harmony.Serge was relentless. He thought of me as a kidbrother. But if I played a wrong change on thebandstand, or did something he didn't like, he'dthink nothing of yelling at me in front of an audi-ence. It was a great way to learn under pressure.Eventually, his rants became less frequent."

After high school, Kuhn attended Harvard. "Ihad a trio with Arnold Wise and Chuck Israel. We worked six nights a week at a club inHarvard Square. I stayed out late and missedclasses, so it was amazing that I graduated. Wealso worked for different horn players comingthrough Boston: Coleman Hawkins, Chet Bakerand Don Elliott, among them." Kuhn's post-graduate study included a period at the LenoxSchool of Music. "It was really like a three-weekhang and we got very little sleep. GuntherSchuller's work ethic, his complete devotion tothe music and his encyclopedic knowledgeastounded me. The Modern Jazz Quartet,George Russell and Kenny Dorham, with whomI later worked, were all there. I'd known BillEvans since 1957. Max Roach was the leader ofthe group I was in, along with fellow studentsOrnette Coleman and Don Cherry."

"Early on, I was often compared to BillEvans. When I heard his records, I was takenaback. We were traveling along parallel linesmusically, but he was more together than I was.Eventually, I found my own voice, though thattook awhile. Bill was definitely an influence, along with Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker,Miles and Coltrane, plus the classical composersI loved dearly. Art Tatum is my number-oneinfluence, but I also liked Erroll Garner, BudPowell, Fats Waller and the boogie-woogiepianists."

Kuhn made his recording debut with KennyDorham. "He helped me a lot in voicing chords. Ihadn't worked much with a quintet - and it wasanother experience being the only Caucasian inthe band. Kenny opened many doors for me,along with my eyes and ears. He furthered myeducation."

Membership in Coltrane's first quartet was awholly different experience for Kuhn. "I was justtwenty-one and thrilled beyond belief. Weworked six nights a week at the old Jazz Galleryon St. Mark's Place. The club was packed everynight. I was looking for my own voice and tryingdifferent things. Often when he was improvis-ing, I'd be out there with him rather than comp-ing or laying out. I probably got in his way attimes, so I told him, 'Look, if there's anything I'mdoing that you don't want me to do, or if there'sanything that I could do that I'm not doing, please let me know!' He said, 'I respect you toomuch as a musician, I can't tell you how to play.'Ultimately I found out that what he wanted waswhat McCoy Tyner did - laying down a nice car-pet off which he could spring and do what hewanted musically."

Other important sideman jobs followed."Stan Getz was a complex person," recalls Kuhn."He had a large insecurity and knew I'd gradu-ated from Harvard, so he would mention it whenhe introduced me on the bandstand. It was par-tially tongue-in-cheek. If he wanted me to layout, he'd tell me to stroll. Other than that, henever said anything to me about my playing. Ijust learned a lot on my own from listening."Then Kuhn joined Art Farmer's quartet, replac-ing guitarist Jim Hall. "Art was very quiet.Steve Swallow and Pete LaRoca, with whom Ihad recorded my album Three Waves, recom-mended me. It was a great year."

Kuhn relocated to Europe for the sake ofromance. "Swallow had a party in December of1966. He and LaRoca had met the Swedishsinger and actress Monica Zetterlund when Art's

WHICH LIVING JAZZ MUSICIAN HASperformed and recorded with Charles

Mingus, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, GrantGreen, Paul Simon, Gil Evans, Aretha Franklin,Slide Hampton, Ray Brown, Milt Hinton, BillyJoel, J. J. Johnson, Clint Eastwood, OscarPeterson, Eric Clapton, the Heath Brothers,Frank Wess, Clark Terry, Senegalese percus-sionists Abdou M'Boup and Alioune Faye, DianaRoss, David Hazeltine, Sarah Vaughan andEubie Blake?

Right! It's trumpeter, composer, conductor, bandleader, educator Jon Faddis, born inOakland, California, in 1953.

One of the most encouraging aspects of jazz iswatching someone grow from Youngblood toMaster in the space of a few decades. Havingseen Louis Armstrong on "The Ed SullivanShow," Jon began playing trumpet at seven. Histrumpet teacher, Stan Kenton-alumnus BillCatalano, introduced him to Dizzy Gillespie'smusic three years later. Then at fifteen, Jon metDizzy at the Monterey Jazz Festival and sat inwith him soon after, beginning a loving three-decade relationship. Students are supposed togo beyond their teachers, and Jon did: Gillespieonce announced gleefully that his protégé was"…the best ever, including me!"

Soon after graduating from high school, Jonwas energizing Lionel Hampton's big band. Hesubsequently played lead trumpet for the ThadJones-Mel Lewis Orchestra at the VillageVanguard - and toured the former Soviet Unionwith them under State Department sponsorship.Later, Jon led the United Nation Orchestra, theDizzy Gillespie 70th Birthday Big Band and theCarnegie Hall Jazz Band. He was ArtisticDirector for the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, as wellas its thriving successor, the Jon Faddis JazzOrchestra of New York. More recently, he'sguest-conducted and soloed with the LincolnCenter Jazz Orchestra.

In any context, Jon can still blow other jazztrumpeters away, should he choose to. He playsdazzling rapid figurations with ease well up intothe stratosphere at whatever volume the situa-tion calls for. But he's more than simply a virtu-oso soaring into the upper registers. Jon's tone ishuge throughout the range of his horn, and he

Faddis photo by John Abbott

knows how to sing a melody lyrically and joy-ously. He reaches back into the tradition to emu-late his heroes Louis Armstrong, Roy Eldridge,Snooky Young, and Joe Wilder by playing bal-lads tenderly or digging deep into the blues. Andhe knows how to swing, whether he's leading hisown groups or appearing with orchestras honor-ing Basie or Ellington. Jon has made hundredsof recordings - from duets with Oscar Petersonwhen he was just twenty-two to work on filmsoundtracks. In 2003, he received the first hon-orary doctorate in jazz studies awarded byManhattan School of Music. Later that year, heserved as music director for opening ceremoniesat the Louis Armstrong House Museum inCorona, Queens.

Jon's awareness of the music and his place init doesn't stop when his trumpet is back in itscase. He also shows a largeness of vision in hisidea of "Teranga," a composition and compactdisc named for the Senegalese word meaning"hospitality." Many younger players have foundhim to be a generous mentor, someone keepingthe legacy of wise kindness alive. And he'sdeeply aware of his roots: a concert at NewYork's Symphony Space found him alongsidetrumpet patriarch Joe Wilder and Faddis pro-tégé Max Darche.

Jon has brought his experience and expertiseonto campus as Artist-in-Residence, Professorand Director of Jazz Performance at theConservatory of Music at SUNY Purchase. He'salso an advisor to Jazz at Lincoln Center, espe-cially with its "Essentially Ellington" competi-tion for high school jazz orchestras. He's alsobeen composing for a long time - from the fierce"Into the Faddisphere" and a ballad entitled"The Best I've Found" to compositions inspiredby the paintings of Romare Bearden and his jazzopera "Lulu Noire."

His reach continues to be broad, the resultsgratifying. In January, when the Jon FaddisJazz Orchestra played a Kennedy Center concert(archived, incidentally on NPR's website) thepersonnel included Max Darche and TerellStafford, trumpets; Conrad Herwig and SteveTurre, trombones; Dick Oatts and Ralph Lalamaon reeds, Ted Rosenthal on piano, Todd Coolmanon bass, and vocalist Nnenna Freelon.

Jon's latest excursion "into the Faddisphere"involved a particularly fruitful collaborationwith his wife Laurelyn Douglas that resulted intheir first child, Tyler John Faddis, born inOctober, 2010. (And that middle name isn't mis-spelled; it honors Jon's maternal grandfather.)

The trumpeter told writer Mitchell Seidelthat the concept of teranga “itself embraces andembodies the philosophy of welcoming and beingwelcomed wherever in the world you are - beingable to feel at home in the world." When theproud father appears at next month's Highlightsin Jazz presentation, planned as a tribute topianist Hank Jones, Jon will be at home on thatstage among his peers, honoring the masters ofthe past while retaining his own sound in everynote.

In addition to Jon Faddis, the May 5Highlights in Jazz concert at TribecaPerforming Arts Center will also feature FrankWess, Joe Lovano, Steve Turre, Junior Mance,George Mraz and Winard Harper.

From this moment onFor the past couple of years, vocalist Lil Phillipshas been taking a break from singing, "hibernat-ing and working on my spiritual self." But thatdoesn't mean she hasn't been involved in music.Lil has been booking excellent players in her roleas director of jazz vespers at the oldest blackchurch in New York State, Harlem's MotherAME Zion. The quarterly gigs are garnering alot of support from both musicians and listeners."The more we have people come, the more wehave people who are willing to come," she says.Lil's getting a "new start" with her singing thisspring. She's working on a tribute to EllaFitzgerald and will be putting her stamp ontunes from the vocal virtuoso's repertoire. "I lovethe way she sang, but it's not my way," Lil says."I like getting an edge in there. I love that edge,a blues edge. To do it Ella's way I'd have to takethat out. And I add drama, things I don't expressin daily life." At the International Women inJazz Festival at Saint Peter's on April 9, Lilplans to put her spin on standards and spiritu-als. "I'll be prepared to have fun. I like to be inthe moment and create. That's jazz, it'll neverhappen that exact way again," she says. "I like tolive in the moment. Don't miss anything by look-ing ahead or behind. There's something happen-ing right now." The IWJ festival lineup includes, among others, vocalists Andrea Wolper, Takeoand Antoinette Montague, and pianists TammyHall and Linda Presgrave. The event honorsWBGO's Rhonda Hamilton and pays tribute tothe late organist Trudy Pitts.

Into the mysticPianist Helen Sung remembers exactly whenshe fell in love with jazz: listening to TommyFlanagan's album Confirmation with backing byElvin Jones and George Mraz. "I had no ideawho they were, but the feeling, the sound, theclarity, the improvisation all grabbed me," Helensays. "I thought, if only I could play halfway likethis one day." Since then Helen has pursued themusic in settings from solo to sidewoman. Forthis month alone, she's lined up four very differ-ent gigs. Helen hits the Jazz Standard with theMingus Big Band on April 11. "It's amazing tosee Mingus' breadth as a composer, from swing-ing jazz to avant-garde to classical. It inspiresme in my own music." She plays the Montclair

Museum on April 16 as part of WBGO's jazzseries for children, and hopes to have a danceron board, someone able to get everyone up andmoving. She enjoys working with and playing forkids and is dismayed by cutbacks in schoolmusic programs. "People are impacted by music. It's a mysterious, mystical thing, but it's neces-sary for life." Her electric/fusion band Wired willbe at the 55 Bar on April 26. And on April 30 atFlushing Town Hall, Helen will debut “SungWith Words,” a concert of poems she set to musicand featuring vocalist Carolyn Leonhart. Shecredits poet and former NEA head Dana Gioiawith getting her interested in reading poetry."He says it's meant to be experienced out loud. Ienjoy imagining the words to music, and findingthe rhythmic line." Keep an ear out for Helen'snew trio CD, (re)Conception (SteepleChase), acollection of standards plus one original, whichwas recorded on such short notice that "therewas no time to rehearse," with drummer LewisNash and bassist Peter Washington. "They'resuch pros that they could handle everything Ithrew at them. They've worked with all thegreats," including Helen's early inspirationTommy Flanagan. Next time, she aims to recordsolo, "That's the holy grail. On a solo pianorecording, you're it. And there's the weight oftradition. I'm excited to add my own thing to it,but it's a challenge not to be crushed by the jazztradition. The music has to move forward or elseyou find yourself in a museum."

Swing streetA lot of places have a two-drink minimum, but ifsinger Terese Genecco is on stage, there's alsolikely to be a two-ballad maximum. "I never domore than two ballads in a set; sometimes I onlydo two a night," she says. "I gravitate to keepingit uptempo. I have a high adrenaline level at thestart and get more and more pumped" as theshow goes on. Terese grew up in San Francisco, listening to the likes of Tony Bennett, the RatPack, Carmen McRae and June Christy with herfather and grandfather. She still remembersthat when Sarah Vaughan came to town, shewas herself in the front row as an eight-year old.For her own show these days, Terese searchesfor lesser known material by the icons she grewup with, digging out tunes that "speak to me andare authentic to the era. I focus on the groove, the tempo and being true to the lyric." She is

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROWBill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be found at your

favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com along with many interesting photos and links.

Joe Bennett sent me a tribute to the late Hank Jones, saying that clean livingaccounted for his remarkable longevity. (Hank didn't smoke or drink.) Joe says Hank was agentleman, but he wouldn't take any lip. When Benny Goodman gave him one of his famousglares, Hank just packed up and went home. Benny called and said it wouldn't happen again, but after that Hank kept his hat on the piano, and whenever Benny looked at him, Hankwould grab his hat.

Bucky Pizzarelli told me about a studio recording made out in California back in thedays of Hi-Fi. Rimski-Korsakov's "Scheherezade" had been arranged by Skip Martin for theHollywood Bowl Orchestra plus an 19-piece jazz band with heavyweight players like ConradGozzo, Jimmy Rowles, Irv Cottler, etc. The arrangement went back and forth between clas-sical and jazz versions of the piece. Bucky played the LP for Benny Goodman, and he saidwhen the brass section hit, Benny's eyes popped open. When Bucky asked Benny how heliked the record, Benny said, "Get rid of that symphony, and you've got a hell of a record!"

A Moment You Missed by Fran Kaufman HotHouse Contributing Photographer

I guess all the travel and the different venues makejazz musicians so adaptable. Israeli pianist AnatFort, who played opening night at the Portland JazzFestival 2011, seemed to relish the wait for GaryWong's bass to show up for sound check. Unmovedby the delay, Anat practiced a session of T'ai Chi inthe green room until everything was in place.Maybe that practice contributes to the depth andmeditative nature of her performances.

KUHN...continued from page 30

WINNING SPINS...continued from page 10composer is particularly apparent on the CD'slast two tracks. "Off the Top," adding GaryVersace's organ, mixes Monkian dissonanceswith strong echoes of Ellington's "I Got It Bad,"all coalescing into a distinctive Evans work. Thetitle song, with Versace switching to accordion,is a tango with martial accents from Wilson dur-ing Horton's striking featured solo.

Ralph Peterson's Spectrum Trio appears atMiles’ Café April 9 & 10, then takes part in anacademic workshop at Long Island Universityon April 19. The Falkner Evans Quintet, withMarc Mommaas replacing Tardy on tenor sax, holds a CD release performance at Kitano onApril 28.

group played Stockholm. I met her myself thatnight and we started a relationship. I moved inMay of 1967 and took along the drummer MartyMorell. We used a Swedish bassist, PalleDanielsson, who was just twenty-one and verytalented. Our trio worked for a while but Martygot homesick and returned to New York severalmonths later. I used different drummers andbass players and worked with Monica aroundScandinavia. I lived there for four years, thencame back to the U.S. when that relationshipended."

Some of Kuhn's most important collabora-tions over the years have been with ECMfounder Manfred Eicher. "I first recorded for himwhen he came to New York in 1974. That was analbum called Trance. He wanted to mix it inOslo, so I flew over. While we were mixing, heasked me to cut a solo album the next day. I wasnervous because I had no idea what I'd do.Anyway, the record was entitled Ecstasy, whichwas spontaneously improvised. All the tuneswere originals I'd never before played as solopieces. I'm also proud of my strings album,Promises Kept, which is dedicated to my parentsand grandparents. They came from Hungaryand made it possible for me to grow up in freesociety and do whatever I wanted to do."

Kuhn currently has several recording proj-ects in various stages of completion. "ConcertsIn Italy, which I did a few years ago with EddieGomez and Billy Drummond, will be coming outsoon on the Music Eyes label. When I did a weekat Birdland last September with Dave Liebman,Steve Swallow and Billy Drummond, the ownerliked it so much that he recorded both sets onthe final night. I had an engineer mix it into twoCDs I'd like to put out. I'm also trying to recorda trio with Steve Swallow and Joey Baron. ThisBirdland appearance should also be fun. EddieGomez is a virtuoso player with great harmonicknowledge. He and Joey Baron interject littlethings that make it a real conversation, not justme leading a trio."

Steve Kuhn's trio with bassist Eddie Gomezand drummer Joey Baron plays at Birdland onApril 26-30.
