‘The only way to heaven is through hell.’ Bikram Choudhury

Beste, was man heute tun kann.
So wirkt
Bikram einerseits entschlackend und entgiftend und stärkt anderer-
seits das Immunsystem. Durch die in stets identischer Reihenfolge
ausgeführte Bewegungsserie wird systematisch frisches, mit
Sauerstoff angereichertes Blut zu jeder Körperzelle transportiert.such intensity that the effect on the body approximates that of an
aerobic session.
‘Pretty much anyone can do Bikram Yoga’ assures me the yoga teacher
as she leads me to the training room of one of the over 1,000 studios
worldwide. As the door opens, I am left with no doubt as to why they
call it ‘Hot Yoga’. Around 38°C and 40% humidity! It’s like stepping
off the plane in the late Indian spring. The heat plays an important
role by enabling a more intensive muscle, ligament, and tendon
workout. Everyone faces a mirror so they can see exactly what they’re
doing and correct themselves when necessary – it also aids in one’s
self-focus. The training lasts an hour and a half and the teacher is on
the move the whole time. With calming grace, she walks between
the participants, correcting and congratulating, demonstrating and
delegating. Beginners such as myself are encouraged but not forced –
everyone should explore their own limits. Anyone who has ever tried
aerobics knows that the concentration required when mimicking the
new moves of an instructor is often as stressful as the physical activity
itself. Yoga takes full advantage of the energy that flows when both
mind and body are forced to focus. How much energy and how
freely it flows depends on the person. More important than executing a
position perfectly, is the mental state of mind while attempting it.
‘Perfect’ is simply the best one manages on the day.
The practice consists of strict adherence to two back to back sessions
of 26 Hatha Yoga poses – or ‘asanas’ – plus breathing exercises
(Pranayama) before and after each asana. True Bikram Yoga follows
this procedure to the letter and is not open to interpretation.
The training is hard. As a beginner, achieving respectable asanas
is challenging enough - the heat becomes relentless. It’s not long
though, before one enters a more limber state, the heat a welcome
companion, opening the pores and penetrating deep within the
muscles. The perspiration begins to flow, purging impurities,
strengthening the immune system. ‘Is there method to this
madness?’ I ask myself. Apparently so - the precise process of Bikram
Yoga is designed to systematically deliver oxygen-rich blood to every
extremity in the body.

Grad Raumtemperatur reagiert mein Körper beinahe traumwandle-
Wer Bikram-Yoga praktizieren will,
An hour goes by and I have to admit I’m not feeling neither spiritual
connection nor rebirth. I’ve barely moved and yet I’m a sweaty,
panting bundle - continually contemplating when this torture will be
over. I’ve lost a lot of water and minerals - then it happens! My mind
suddenly frees and I enter a state of clarity. My ‘Garurasana’ asana – or
eagle – still looks like a penguin with appendicitis, but at least my mind
is soaring.
Some critics claim the training poses an unnecessary risk to beginners.
Looking in the reflections of those spaced out in this room, I receive
only expressions of genuine understanding. They were all beginners
once – and the positive effects of Bikram Yoga convinced them to keep
coming back till they were beginners no more.
The training is over and we exit what has been the longest sauna of my
life. While all the participants show signs of fatigue, I also see something
else – something I don’t see after an aerobics workout: inner peace.
More than simply exhausted, the participants are relaxed. ‘I always feel
10 years younger after my Bikram’ beams one of the women as we
walk towards the changing room. She is not alone – with many claiming
miraculous results combating chronic back pain, high blood pressure and
even diabetes.
As I stand under the refreshing blast of water contemplating the last
hour and a half, I’m constantly amazed at how free my mind is. My
muscles on the other hand, remind me of just how blocked my body
must be. I’m no stranger to exercise but I feel like I’ve just run a
marathon – and I make a note to recommend Bikram Yoga to anyone
looking for a real alternative to aerobics or spinning.
