CHIMING OF THE HOUR

The sounding of the three chimes symbolizes the presence of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

*HYMN OF PRAISE NO. 529 How Firm a Foundation FOUNDATION

Stanzas 1, 3, 4, 5

How firm a foundation, yet saints of the Lord,

is laid for your faith in his excellent word!

What more can he say than to you he hath said,

to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

When through deep waters I call thee to go,

the rivers of woe shall not thee overflow;

for I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless,

and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.

When through fiery trials thy pathways shall lie,

my grace, all-sufficient, shall be thy supply;

the flame shall not hurt thee; I only design

thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.

The soul that on Jesus still leans for repose,

I will not, I will not desert to its foes;

that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,

I'll never, no, never, no, never forsake.

*PASSING OF THE PEACE Rev. Josh Hickman Let us offer one another signs of reconciliation and love

CHILDREN’S MINUTE Jesus Loves Me Mandy Smith, Director Children’s Music & Worship Arts

Wonders of Worship (WOW) for children K-3rd grade will resume services on September 8

during the 11:00 worship service.

A small village in coastal Maine is the backdrop for the musical, “Carousel.” After a day’s labor in the mills, two young women, Julie and Carrie, visit the town’s amusement park. The carousel barker, Billy, takes notice of Julie and a romantic interest blooms. Soon, Julie and Billy are smitten with each other. The carousel’s owner, a widow and former lover of Billy’s becomes jealous and tells Julie to leave and not return to the park. Billy quarrels with the widow and she promptly fires him from his job. A few months later, Julie and Billy marry, but the marriage is strained. Still out of work, Billy grows increasingly angry, and is openly hostile to her. Billy’s whaler friend, a shady fellow named Jigger, tries to recruit Billy in a scheme to rob the mill owner. Billy initially declines. However, Julie discovers she is pregnant, and Billy, overwhelmed with joy, decides he would take up Jigger’s offer to commit robbery in order to provide financially for their child. Before the robbery, Jigger and Billy play poker. Jigger cheats Billy out of his share of any of the proceeds of the booty. The robbery is foiled when the mill owner pulls a gun on Billy as Jigger escapes. A distraught Billy stabs himself fatally; Julie arrives just in time for him to tell her how much he loves her. A heavenly official takes Billy's defiant spirit to the Starkeeper, who informs him the good he did while on earth is not enough to get into heaven. The official tells Billy that fifteen years on earth have passed since his suicide. He suggests that Billy may redeem himself if he helps his now 15-year old daughter, Louise, who has become lonely, bitter and destructive. Billy steals a star to take with him. Having the power to makes himself visible to Louise, he disguises himself as her father’s friend. She is sobbing over the loss of her love and he gives her the star in an attempt to comfort her. When she refuses it, he slaps her. She confides in her mother about the strange encounter and that the slap felt like a kiss, not a blow. Julie picks up the star and feels Billy’s presence. In one last chance to help Louise, he attends her graduation where the town’s beloved doctor advises the class not to rely on their parents' success or be held back by their shortcomings. While invisible, Billy tells Louise to believe the doc-tor’s words, and she learns she does not have to be an outcast and so long as she has hope, she will never walk alone. Billy, having redeemed himself, re-ceives his heavenly reward.
