History of luneta hotel

To the corner of Luneta Park, we could go left onto the west boundary of Wallace Field along the unfinished extension of Calle M. H. del Pilar (M.H. del Pilar Street). This is the Ermita district of Spanish residents. Arriving at Calle San Luis ((Teodoro M. Kalaw Street today )if we looked to the right we would see the Luneta Hotel.

The hotel has an exceptional Belle Époque facade reminiscent of French renaissance architecture. Designed by Spanish architect Salvador Farre, it was completed in 1918, The six-storey building towered on 38 San Luis (T.M. Kalaw) street during a more genteel era as Manila emerged from Spanish colonialism. The tenants had a gorgeous view of the famous Manila Bay sunsets and Bagumbayan (Luneta Park) from its balconies.

One of the person stayed in Luneta Hotel was the author of the

book “Parade of the Dead” John R. Bumgarner, M.D.

Page 11: Hospitality Services - Weebly

In July 1941 the army decided to convert the Luneta Hotel into a non-commissioned officers’ club.

Suite room in Luneta Hotel:

the hotel went from majestic to abandoned after

it closed in 1987.

The hotel was described as a quietly

elegant and attractive family style

hotel with a charmingly continental

design. It used to boast of 60 rooms

with private bath, two suites,

telephone in all rooms, a restaurant,

coffee shop and spacious lanais. It is

the only building in Manila in the

French Renaissance style.

Features:

The hotel originally served turn of the century Filipino-Spanish dishes, some of which are now everyday home-cooked meals for Filipinos. Kare-kare (ox tripe and tail stew, mixed with vegetables and flavoured with peanuts) and Paella (Spanish mixed rice dish) were some of the notable favorites.

Chef Norman Paguio, who heads the hotel’s kitchen.

Luneta Hotel General Manager Dr. Grace Francisco-Torres says there will be no expansions for the hotel as they want it to stay intimate with its 27 spacious and sophisticated rooms.

History of Manila hotel

Architect and the city planner Daniel Hudson Burnham drafted a wide and long tree-lined boulevard that would begin at the park and at the spit's end of the bay, a boulevard that would be dominated on one end by a hotel. William Parsons was appointed to continue where Burnham left off. He supervised the design and construction of Manila Hotel and was completed four years later. A magnificent, white, green-tile-roofed California Missionary-styled edifice emerged housing 149 spacious and high- ceiling rooms. Date of the American Independence, Manila Hotel was inaugurated and officially opened. July 4, 1912. Manila Hotel was Government owned property.

Manila Hotel was burned during the 1945 Battle for Manila. Although it continued operations after the war, changes in management and problem with logistics tarnished the place.
