About UsEstablished in 1998, ABC Awards (ABC) is the result of combining more than 180 years of regional examination and assessment practices into one national Awarding Organisation. As a registered charity we are continuing the tradition of our founding organisations who were established by the sector to deliver useful and practical qualifications whilst off ering exceptional support and ABC is proud to still be

“owned” by the sector and working for the sector.

ABC off ers an outstanding range of vocational qualifications which reflect the skills that employers and centres look for in learners and employees. At ABC, we recognise the importance of continuing to off er not only a wide range and breadth of qualifications, but just as significantly, excellent customer support.

An Experienced and Knowledgeable TeamOur friendly and responsive approach to customers means all our centres have access to a dedicated Qualification Administrator as well as unlimited access to a Business Development Manager who can answer any queries or concerns you might have. Our Moderators are all subject specialists and are chosen by us for their experience, knowledge and ability to support centres to deliver ABC’s qualifications successfully.

A Wide Range of QualificationsOur portfolio of more than 600 Ofqual regulated qualifications covers 14 sectors with qualifications to suit all ages and abilities. We have designed all ABC qualifications with the support of relevant stakeholders to make sure that they meet the needs of the current industries across the UK. This means that the qualifications are designed to give learners the skills needed to find employment, progress within education or enhance their skills in their current job role. We have more than 1200 centres with many tens of thousands of certificates being issued each year.

Hospitality and Catering FactsThe Hospitality and Catering Industry covers hotels, restaurants, pubs, bars and nightclubs, contract catering, hospitality services, youth/backpacker hostels, holiday centres and self catering accommodation. It operates across well known chains and in small businesses, including owner/operators, which make up just under three quarters of employers. The industry is a big employer and contributes around £30m to the English economy each year, with the restaurant industry alone employing two thirds of a million people.

ABC’s hospitality and catering qualifications provide excellent first steps to pursuing further study or the opportunity to carve out a future career. Covering a wide range of skills and techniques, our qualifications are much in demand and admired by the industry.

What qualifications are on off er and who are they aimed at?• Introduction into the Hospitality Industry

All of these qualifications have been developed for those learners who wish to gain work-related skills in the area of hospitality. They are aimed at adults and young people - some qualifications are aaccessible to pre-16 learners.

ABC’s Hospitality qualifications enable learners to gain an insight into the core activities within this occupational area so they are able to follow them in order to make informed career decisions.

Learners will increase their employability skills and can prepare for further training upon completion of one of these qualificiations.

HospitalityHospitality is part of the wider leisure, travel and tourism sector which needs to recruit 855,000 managers, chefs, waiting and bar staff and catering assistants by the year 2017 to replace those who leave or retire. The Industry is facing a number of key challenges to make sure that staff have the right skills and once trained, that they stay and develop their skills to fulfil their career ambitions, contributing to increased productivity and business profitability.

With ABC’s hospitality provision learners can opt to study for multi skilled jobs in hospitality services, such as housekeeping, front of house reception, waiters/silver service waiters, bar person and kitchen assistants. They can then go on to further their career as cooks and chefs, off ering a variety of cuisines in a range of kitchens, fast food outlets and restaurants. Learners can also train as sous/senior chefs or managers in hotels, restaurants, pubs, bars and clubs.

What prior knowledge is needed?

Entry requirements vary depending upon what level of qualification a learner wishes to study within the Hospitality sector. However, generally a learner will need to display that they have working knowledge in the subject they wish to study or have a keen interest in their chosen subject area.

What Next? - Progression Routes

• Further education e.g. another ABC qualification or an AS Level from an ABC Level 2 qualification• Improve employment prospects• Learners can use the knowledge gained from studying an ABC hospitality qualification to progress further within their current job role

ApprenticeshipsHospitality and Catering Apprenticeships are available to people who have a vested interest in the hospitality and catering industry and who want to learn the skills needed for a successful career in this field. Apprentices get to develop industry specific skills and knowledge whilst learning key / core skills. The ABC Awards Level 3 Certificate in General Patisserie and Confectionery qualification contributes towards the following apprenticeship:

CateringABC Awards dedicated range of catering qualifications cover specialisms such as cake decoration wired sugar flowers and pastry and confectionery. These technical and competence qualifications, valued by employers, to help their businesses grow, develop the learners personal learning and thinking skills, which helps build their confidence and creativity. This in turn improves their social and working lives. Many learners go on to run their own businesses and work in top restaurants as pastry chefs.

General / Professional Patisserie and ConfectioneryThese qualifications are for learners who have an interest in patisserie and confectionery as an area of employment and want to develop practical skills in this area. Learners will gain the essential knowledge, skills and understanding to produce patisserie and confectionery products.

Wired Sugar FlowersThe ABC Level 1 Award / Level 2 Certificate in Wired Sugar Flowers have been devised for those learners who wish to acquire wired sugar flowers skills to enhance future employment prospects.

These hands-on qualifications provide practical experience in handling tools and equipment and give the learner and understanding of the commodities used.

Learners will have the opportunity to develop the specialist skills that are required to succeed in this industry - both of these qualifications are designed to prepare learners for employment in this area of work.

Cake DecorationThe ABC Cake Decoration qualifications have been developed for those people who are interested in developing skills in cake decorating and sugarcraft through vocational study. They are aimed at people who already work in catering industry as well as those who have a vested interest in this area.

Our Cake Decoration qualifications are appropriate as a basis for self-employment, full-time or part-time catering or for bakery learners to enhance their vocational skills.
