After-hours clinic set to openLVN271113pjfdoctors
JOINT EFFORT: The peopleinvolved in getting a better
after-hoursmedical service intoaction, from left: Sandra
Lester, general manager HorowhenuaCommunity Practice, Dr ChrisLane,
After-Hours Practiceproject manager HannahWatson, practicemanager
ofMasonicMedical Centre, DrGraham Irving.

Confusion onwhere to find anafter-hours doctors is at an
end,centralised after-hours servicesbegins onMonday at
theHealthcentre on Liverpool Street and isseen to be amajor step
forwardfor the community and visitorswho holiday inHorowhenua onan
annual basis.
The revamped after-hourssystem aims tomake it easier forpeople
to find and access ageneral practitioner or practicenurse outside
of normal workinghours.
FromMonday, all of thedistricts doctors will contributeto the
newHorowhenuaAfter-hours Clinic that will operate outof
theHorowhenuaHealthCentre on Liverpool St, Levin.
Projectmanager HannahWatson said the clinic, for acuteor urgent
appointments, wouldtake themystery out of where theafter-hours
servicewas and thehours it was open.
Local GPs discussed varioussolutions and agreed that
acentralisedmodel is the bestsolution they can offerHorowhenua
residents needingto see a doctor or nurse after-hours.
The upshot is everyonewillknowwhere andwhen they canfind
theHorowhenuaAfter-hours Clinic, MsWatson.
The clinic will operate everyweek night from 5pm to 7.30pmand
from 8am to 5.30pm on
weekends and public holidays.People should phone in to
make appointments, but walk-inswill also be accepted.
Horowhenua residents willcontinue to be able to use thenational
Healthline nurse adviceservice or travel to city doctorsin
PalmerstonNorth if they needto see a doctorwhen theHorowhenua
after-hours serviceis closed.
Aswithmost semi-ruraldistricts the size of Horowhenua,we simply
cant afford to runservices to 10pm, so people doneed to plan ahead
asmuch aspossible and get in to see the GPor nursewhen the
after-hoursclinic is open, MsWatson said.
Whats planned is a
Horowhenua response to thelocal Horowhenua health issues.
MsWatson said the after-hours servicewas a fee-payingservice
and, while the fees hadbeen reduced on average, thecost to visit an
after-hours doctorwasmore expensive thanvisiting a doctor during
normalworking hours.
An additional DHB subsidywill allow the after-hours serviceto be
free to children under sixyears of age.
At present, people need to gothroughHealthline to
accessafter-hours care and speak to anursewho assesses
theirsituation. Only after a phoneassessmentwill Healthlineadvise
themwhich doctor is on
duty andwhere they can belocated.
MsWatson said some peoplehad been frustrated by this andsimply
hung up onHealthlineand driven around town lookingfor a doctor on
duty or justheaded straight to PalmerstonNorth.
We think the solution thathas been agreed to by all thedistricts
doctors will make ahuge difference and provide amuch better
service. she said.
During the hours the clinic isopen, the people phoning
theirregular practice will be putstraight through to the
after-hours clinic. Therewill also bean extended hours
clinicoperating on Thursday evenings
at DrKirstin SauermannsQueen St East surgery at 538Queen St
Levin, recognising thatmany people work out of town orare unable to
see a GP during theday.
This is in addition to the after-hours clinic and people will
befree to choose either service on aThursday.
The TeWaiora team are alsoassessing if they can providesome
extended hours clinics forFoxton and Shannon next year.
MsWatson said therewas apossibility of furtherimprovements over
time. Wewill review how the service isoperating and look for
continualimprovements. For now, we arereally pleasedwithwhatwe
areable to offer the community intime for the festive season
andholiday period, she said.
The general practicesinvolved include: Queen StreetSurgery East,
Queen StreetSurgery,MasonicMedicalCentre, HorowhenuaCommunity
Practice, TararuaMedical Practice, TeWaiora(partnership of Foxton
FamilyHealth and Raukawa IwiMedicalServices (Te Runanga
oRaukawa).

They firstmet when Joanwas 14 andMichael was 17.
Joan left the Girl Guidemovement a shorttime later. Wewere not

The couple never imagined seven decadeslater theywould be

In 1956 the couple, accompanied bydaughter Ann, then 9, headed
toNewZealand aboard the Captain Cook.Michael

The shipwas delayed and the jobwasgonewhenwe arrived, Michael
said.Withno job and very littlemoney in a foreigncountry the Browns
were grateful when fatestepped in.
A job in BlenheimwithWrightStevensons came up, Michael said.
Accepting the position theymoved to asmall cottage in Spring

their own home.
The couple lived in Blenheimuntil 1994when theymade themove

Asked to share the secret of their longmarriage, they both have

Anyonewho says they have gonethroughmarried life without an
argument isa liar,Joan said.
Weve hadmore than one disagreement. You have to talk it through,
you cant letthings build up, you have to get it off yourchest, she
said.
Michael agrees, Its about give and takebut dont take

All-in-all weve had a bloody good lifetogether and Im looking

TOP TIPS FORDADSWhether you are a dad living in atwo-parent
household, a non-custodial dad, a stepdad, a stay-at-home dad, or
whatever your role, themost precious thing a dad cangive his child
is time.
A personal investment for dadsin their childs life
ismuchmoreimportant to them than any toy orthe latest electronic
gadget. Hereare some great, and creative, waysto get togetherwith
you child in apositiveway. The best thing of all, nomoney is
required.Tell thema story:
Younger children especiallylove stories. It is a funway fordads
to invest time in their
childrens lives. Grab a book orjustmake up a story and
enjoymaking believewith your child.Turn off the TV:
It is frightening how importantthe television has become in
somefamilies. Sitting together andwatching TV is entertaining
andsometimes educational, but itdoesnt foster quality togethertime
and interaction.Eat together:
This sounds simple but youwould be surprised howmanyparents and
families struggle tofind time to interact with eachother.
Planningmealtimes andtaking the time to sit downwith
your child and eat together hasmany surprising benefits.Helpwith
you childshomework:
Taking an interest in yourchilds day at school or
pre-schooldoesnt have to be complicated.Simply askingwhatwas
yourfavourite thing you did today isenough to start a
conversation.Last but not least, take yourchild on a picnic:
In factmake themost of theopportunity this Sunday at theTeddy
Bears Picnic. 11am-2pm.LevinAdventure Park. Spotprizes for
dads.
All it will cost you is time!

Sinterklaas, also known as De Goedheiligman (The Good Holy Man),
SaintNicolaas, Saint Nicholas or simply as De Sint (The Saint) is
celebrated annuallyon Saint Nicholas Eve (December 5) in the
Netherlands and on the morning ofDecember 6 in the other
countries.Originally, the feast celebrates the name day of Saint
Nicholas, patron saint ofchildren, sailors, philatelists, and the
city of Amsterdam. Traditional festivityin the Netherlands is the
feast of Sint Nicolaas or Sinterklaas. It does notreplace Christmas
celebrations, but is a part of it.
Foxtons iconicDeMolenwindmill is benefiting from thesuccess of
theDutchMarketwhich has been open for a yearnextmonth.
Makingmoney tomaintain themill was always a concern butbetween
the two the future islooking very bright.
A very special visitor iscoming to celebrate themarketsfirst
birthday onDecember 5.
We opened on SinterklaasDay last year, managerMichaelFeyen
said.
It is a huge celebration in theNetherlands and seemed fittingwe
should do the samehere.
Although the day is celebrated,it is actually a commemoration
ofthe death of Sinterklaas in 340AD.It is said Sinterklaas rides
acrossrooftops at night on hiswhitehorse leaving presents for
goodchildren and coal for thosewhohave been naughty.
Mr Feyen doesnt believeSinterklaaswill need to deliverany coal
in Foxton.
Sinterklaaswill be at theDutchmarket from 6pm to
9pmonThursdayDecember 5 andwill beat theWindmill on
SaturdayDecember 7 for the samehours.

Iwas astonished lastweekto be informed of the idioticbehaviour
of somepersonor persons, who left atelevision set on the

A goods train headingnorth then demolished theset, scattering
glass anddebris for about 100metres.
This is not a newproblemand the temptationarises fromproperty
leftafter hours for the SalvationArmyFamily Store, whichbacks on to
the service lane.
Sadly theft of property isalso amajor problem, and Ihave been
told of diningsuites, and even a pool tablebeing stolen before
staffcould get to the store tosecure them. The potentialfor serious
consequences byputting items on therailway lines does not
barethinking about and, shouldthis ever happen, would bevigorously
investigated bypolice.

With the onset of fineweather, and recordtemperatures
recordedduringNovember, it istimely to remind everyoneheading to
local beachesthat they are designatedroads, and as such, all
rulesof the road apply.Allmotorvehiclesmust be
registeredandwarranted, and thespeed limit of 50km/h is
strictly enforced.Cyclists, both two and
four-wheelers,mustwearhelmets. Sustained loss oftraction,
doingwheelies ordoughnuts,will result inprosecutions and,depending
on the charge, vehicles can beimmediately impoundedanddriver
licencessuspended.
Therewill be apermanent police presenceduring the holidays

basis actingas eyes and ears to helpkeep beach areas safe.
Vehicles of anydescription are notwelcomein the sand dune

Continuing the theme ofsummer and the holidays, policewill again
beenforcing a 4km/htolerance onmaximumspeed limits.Without

Im Alice Bodell and since moving to Horowhenua morethan 20 years
ago, Ive always wanted to create an outletfor quality local arts
and crafts people.
For most of my life Ive been revitalising and reinventingold
furniture. Im a greenie at heart and I simply lovere-using and
transforming something old and tired intosomething beautiful and
desirable.
My style is truly eclectic, from shabby chic, French styleand
rustic to hot Middle Eastern colours, paisleys andeverything else
in between. I love all styles and workthem in together so that
everything I make or sourcefrom local artists is funky, cool and
current.
From crafts, paintings, and furniture, to jewellery, giftwareand

Students on a mission to stop bullyingLVN291113splbullying1
SPELLING IT OUT: About 220 Year 9 and 10 students at Waiopehu
College spell out their STOP BULLYING message on the college
field.
By TANYAWOOD
WaiopehuCollege students havegot two simplewords for bullies
stop bullying.
They also have amessage forpeople who let it happen stopbeing a
silent bystander andstand up for others in trouble.
Year 9 have spent the termlooking at the different types
ofbullying, creating PowerPointand video presentations tohighlight
the impacts on youngpeople, and some innovative
solutions to deal with bullies. And to ensure themessage isseen
and heard, the videoswill beplaying at Te Takere during thesummer
holidays.
The class idea to spell out thewords STOPBULLYINGwith
thestudents on the college fieldgenerated 273 likes on thecollege
Facebook pagewithin 12hours of the photo being posted.
Deputy principal LindaSherlock said of the four types ofbullying
identifiedverbal,physical, social (excluding
people) and cyber it is cyberbullying that is themostprevalent
now.
Cyber bullying, especiallythrough Facebook andAsk.fm,are
becoming huge issues for thecollege to have to deal with. These
keyboardwarriors areable to take on a differentpersona because they
dont haveto face the person theyreattacking.
She said one incident couldinvolve asmany as 10 studentsand it
can get quite nastywith
bullied students refusing to cometo college.
What turns out to be quitetrivial in the end, can get veryheated
sowe have face time atcollegewherewe get the bullyand the person
being harassedtogether in a room to talk thingsthrough.
Year 9 student LukeMillardsaid another solution they hadfound
for cyber bullyingwas notto block the bully.
If you block them, they thinktheyve got to you and then
theyvewon. Just ignore themand theyll get bored and stop.
Ms Sherlock said youngpeople watching online bullyinghad the
chance to step in and notlike it and be prepared to saythat wasnt
nice and to askwhythey are saying those things.
Young people need to bemore selective about who theirfriends
really are.
And one lastmessage from thestudents if you cant sayanything
nice about a person, dont say anything at all.

PETER Rees 10P (Panthers) deals to Nelson Tigers 82N Jared Gray.
SQUARE PHOTOGRAPHY:
Stockcar fans got a double doseof teams racing on Saturdaywhen
the Palmerston NorthPanthers took on the NelsonTigers.
The Panthers were looking toavenge last years first teamsrace
against the Tigers, whenthe boys from across the ditchwon the first
teams race of theyear.
The Panthers were the sameteamwho lost the ChallengeCup in 2012
but for theunsuspecting Tigers the tidewas about to turn.
The action started as soon asthe flag fell, with 9P Shane
Pennclosely followed by 7P PeterBengston and 10P Peter Reesmade a
break at the front.
However, the Tigers werequick to hit back with 85N DaleEwers
slowing the hardcharging Penn, 84N ShawHarwood got the better
ofBengston with a crunching hitthat put the number 7P over onits
roof. Rees lined up 82N JaredGray and delivered a boneshattering
hit, but the hit alsoheld Rees up.
Harwood hit the front again,Ewers was chased down by 8PScott
Miers, Miers hit theNelson car with suchforce that it rolled and
burstinto flames.
At the restart Harwood wasstill in the lead, but Miersplayed
block allowing Rees to goaround the outside and take thechequered
flag.
In the second of the twoteams races the action was noless
dramatic as each driverwas eyeing up a place in
thechampionship-winning Pumas.
Asher Rees 126P took 94PWilliamHumphries out of theselectors
equation by puttinghim up onto the fence in thefirst turn.
Possibles 31P Gary Davisrepaid themove by stopping theProbables
number 1 hope PeterRees, Davis pushed the NZ1tank into the wall and
in doing
so punctured Reess tyre.Gavin Taniwha had kept out
of the mayhem and stayed onthe lead lap as the chequeredflag
dropped.
