A story is told when one day the employees of a company reached

their offices and they saw a big notice on the door! On it was

written:

Yesterday the person who has been hindering your growth passedaway. We invite you to join the funeral in the main hall!

In the beginning, they all got sad for the death of one of their

colleagues, but after a while they started getting curious to know

who was that person who hindered the growth of the colleagues

and the company itself. The excitement was such that the security

guards were ordered to control the crowd within the hall. The more

people reached the coffin, the more the excitement heated up.

Everyone thought:

Who is this person who was hindering my progress? Well, at least theydied!

One by one the thrilled employees got closer to the coffin, and when

they looked inside it they suddenly became speechless. They stood

nearby the coffin, shocked and in silence, as if someone had touched

the deepest part of their soul. There was a mirror inside the coffin:

everyone who looked inside it could see themselves.

The World is

Like a

Mirror!

4 YOUR KEY TO SUCCESS

Page 5: Horizon July 2014

There was also a sign next to the mirror that said:

There is only one person who is capable to set limits to your growth: Itis you! You are the only person who can change your life. You are theonly person who can influence your happiness and your success. Youare the only person who can help you!

Our life does not change when our boss changes, when our partner

changes or when our company changes. Our life changes only when

we change, when we go beyond our limiting beliefs, when we realize

that we are the only one responsible for our life. The most important

relationship we can have, is the one we have with ourselves!

Examine yourself, watch yourself.

Don’t be afraid of difficulties, impossibilities and losses! Be a

winner, build yourself and your reality.

The world is like a mirror: it gives back to anyone the reflection of

the thoughts in which one strongly believes. The world and our

reality are like mirrors laying in a coffin, which show to any

individual the death of his/her divine capability to imagine and

create his/her happiness and his/her success.

It’s the way you face Life that makes the difference!

I believe, when Mahatma Gandhi said, you

be the change, he was thinking along the

line of the following idea: If an egg is

broken from outside force... life ends. If an

egg is broken from inside force... life begins.

Great things always begin from our inside!

VP Public Relations

Life can be a hard pill to swallow. On a daily basis, we areconsumed with insecurities and failures that plague us andcontrol our actions.

However, life doesn’t have to be so hard. There’s an art tolearning to let things go and leaving the worries of the past toyesterday. Because in life, we’re all carrying the same load, yetwhat differentiates us is how we choose to carry it. Youshouldn’t be choking on life. All you need is water, a goodmindset and an understanding between the things that can bechanged and the things that must be accepted.

Here at Manama Toastmasters we believe if it doesn’t challengeyou it doesn’t change you and therein lies the key to your success. With the election of a new Executive Committee, we lookforward to a change. A change of focus, rising to challenges andstepping outside the box.

We therefore, dedicate this issue to

Making a life change is scary but you know what is even

more scarier?

Regret.

is the essence of life.

Be willing to surrender who you are

for what you could become.

Communication

and Leadership Development

Communication

The educational program is the heart of every

Toastmasters club. It provides members with a proven

curriculum that develops communication and

leadership skills one step at a time, with many

opportunities for awards and recognition along the

way. The communication and leadership tracks are not

mutually exclusive; you may participate in both at the

same time, if you wish.

What's Next?

Looking to be more than the average Toastmaster?

You’ve been in Toastmasters a while and maybe you’ve reached some of your

goals. Table topics isn’t quite the challenge it once was. When you give a

manual speech, your confidence shows, but you don’t get the same thrill you

used to, back when you first joined your club. Is there more in Toastmasters to

challenge you? Are there advanced communication and leadership skills you

can develop? In a word, Yes! Toastmasters’ advanced program offers you the

opportunity to take your communication and leadership skills to the next level.

With over a dozen Advanced Manuals, The Better Speaker Series, The

Leadership Excellence Series, and plenty of volunteer leadership

opportunities, there’s enough going on to keep you busy in Toastmasters for

years to come.

• You progress along each track by working through a series of manuals, each of

which offers a set of carefully crafted projects to complete.

• Each project includes an evaluation guide, which gives club members an easy

way to provide immediate feedback as the project is completed.

• Once you become a member, you can begin the educational program right away.

Educational Program

MANAMA TOASTMASTERS - JULY 2014 7

Page 8: Horizon July 2014

So, what’s the deal with the CL program?

The Competent Leadership (CL) manual gives you an

opportunity to learn and practice leadership skills by

serving in club roles. It will help you gain self-

confidence and skills that will help you in many ways:

academically, professionally and personally. The CL

manual offers training in time management,

organization, planning and critical thinking – all of

which can be applied to everyday life.

• At each club meeting, have one member assigned as the CL evaluator. By

having an assigned evaluator, you ensure member progress in the CL manual.

• Increase member awareness by requiring that members bring their Competent

Leadership manuals to every club meeting.

• Does your club have a sample copy of the Competent Leadership manual on

display at every meeting? Keeping an extra copy on hand means you’ll have

one available for guests to peruse or for new members to borrow.

• Make sure that you recognize your members when they participate in the CL

manual. Award a member with a ribbon when she’s halfway through and make

an announcement when that person completes the manual. Let her know you

appreciate the special care and preparation that she took with each meeting

role.

• Encourage the president and VPE of your club to promote the CL manual at

each club meeting. Emphasize how the manual functions as a valuable

learning tool – training each member on the different roles of the meeting and

helping them build beneficial skills for the working world and daily life.

Consider this: If the CL manual can help a club run more efficiently and

successfully, and it can also help club members to improve their lives, why

wouldn’t your club leaders pursue it? Sometimes, a little promotion from a fellow

Toastmaster can help smooth the way. Here are ten quick tips from Toastmasters

members that you can use to help promote the Competent Leadership manual:

Leadership Development

8 YOUR KEY TO SUCCESS

Page 9: Horizon July 2014

• Place equal importance

on the leadership and

communication tracks in

your club by including

accreditations for both

tracks in all

correspondence, agendas and programs for your club.

• Use the Competent Leadership Achievement Chart. Post it on the wall during

meetings and keep it up-to-date. Draw attention to the successes listed on the

chart.

• For every speech a member gives, your club can request that he perform and

receive evaluations on at least three meeting roles.

• Does your club have a newsletter or website? Post a reminder to members to

bring their manuals. Also, your club can post a congratulatory list of those who

have completed the manual.

• Ask each member who achieves the CL award to mentor a new member in the

manual.

When the CL manual is second nature to the members of your club, you’ll be

pleasantly and easily learning leadership skills that help you everyday.

This year the Bahrain Marathon Relay will be held for the 35th consecutive year and all

proceeds are given to various charitable causes around Bahrain. It will be held on

Friday, 31st October commencing from 10am onwards. The race will start and end at

the Bahrain International Circuit – home to motorsports in the Middle East.

As we need to start the registration process, all those interested in participating are

requested to sign up. We need at least 20 runners (16 for the race and 4 back

up). There is an Early Bird Registration of BD150 per team which we would like to avail

of. Last date for this is on or before 1st October. Each individual who signs up is

We need your help my friends, in collecting donations towards this worthwhile

cause. Monetary as well as non-monetary donations even T-shirts for the club

participants will be gratefully welcomed.

at the very earliest. The entry fee is BD175 per team for entries

received thereafter.

Practice and training sessions will begin after Ramadan.

Will you carry the baton to the finish line this year?

practice runs were held

months in advance

under the tutelage of

TMs Hannah Karanja

and Edmore Mleya. As

a result of the active

participation of Manama

Toastmasters along with

other associations in the

Relay, a great deal of

money was raised

towards charity.

“Summer Vacation”, is the dream of children but the nightmare of parents.Do you doubt that?? Don’t because I am a living proof of it.

In my childhood we used to travel to my homeland every summer, and myparents were always worried because of me. During one of our vacationsand after only 15 minutes of my arrival, my cousin bragged in front of methat he knew how to climb a wall, I was like “Who told you I couldnt?” andof course I couldn’t, but I never knew when to back out. Despite my worries Itried to climb it, and to my greatest surprise I did – at my second attempt. Iwas celebrating my victory when I heard my mother shouting “Oh my God,what are you doing up there??” I can safely say that my mother’s shout wasa signal that her dream of a calm relaxing vacation had just gone with thewind.

I was a girl full of energy and unlimited time to accomplish all my dreams, not to mention that I was the only girl between my brothers and cousins aswell, I had to prove myself. And to be honest I have one female cousin, butshe was too girly for me!! Imagine, I had asked her one day to race me till theend of the house her reply was “If I run I will dirt my clothes”. Seriously!!Who cares? They can be washed. And you know what? She loves to drinkher imaginary tea from her imaginary cup in her imaginary house with herimaginary friends. Where is the fun in that??

Speech

During that vacation I had a very solid theme “never miss a chance andexperience it all” and you know what, I succeeded, in hurting my leg!!Apparently, I missed a step while running down the stairs and I had to getmy leg stitched.

Unfortunately, my mother declared her rule and I was under surveillance24/7. If she was not there she would appoint somebody to look after me. Iwas not able to move a toe without being bombarded with questions. Mydream vacation was shattered. And if that was not bad enough, I had got thatstitch one day before my Uncle’s wedding. That happened in the one day Icould have done everything without getting caught!! Lucky me!

After few days being trapped I heard my aunt requesting my cousin to goand bring some stuff from her house. I rose up to go with him, but mymother objected. After some persuasion from my aunt she agreed, after allwhat harm would five minutes do!! I flew like a butterfly (without allowingher to notice, of course). I went to my aunt’s house with my brother and twocousins. My cousin went inside the house to bring my aunt what she wanted. My other cousin said “Let us climb that wall,” “Yes, Let us do it” that was myinstant reply, but it was followed by a creepy silence. My cousin finally said“No, you will climb with us and get hurt and we will get the blame as usual”.I tried to convince them that it’s not dangerous, but unfortunately they knewbetter, so I said “You know what, I will climb the wall” They tried to stop mebut I didn’t listen and climbed the wall and sat in the roof of a nearby room.My cousins looked at each other for a while then decided to climb up. Afterall I was the reason they were afraid to climb and since I had alreadyclimbed there was no harm.

They climbed the wall and they have barely reached the top when we hearda thundering sound “What are you doing up there??”

18 YOUR KEY TO SUCCESS

Page 19: Horizon July 2014

It was my uncle’s voice. He was fuming in rage and as my cousin expectedthey were blamed. They tried to explain that I was the first to climb the wallwithout any success. Then he asked me “How on earth will you get down?” Iknew it was so hard for me to descend gradually because of my leg so Ireplied “It’s easy, I will jump”. I swear that it looked as though he waselectrocuted as he followed it with a big “No, don’t do it”. He got up theregrabbed me and brought me down. The boys took this chance to run awaybefore being punished.

My uncle sat me down and told me “You are a nice girl, don’t try to proveyourself to those boys, you can achieve a lot, just as you are” for some strangereason these words caught my attention.

Some of you might be asking themselves was that her wake up call?? Ofcourse not, trouble-making was running through my veins like blood. Thatincident, though, drove many feeling but one has pinned itself to the back ofmy head “Am I really limiting myself??”

I believe this question has its driving force on me till date. No matter hownaughty your children are, you will never know when you will touch theirheart, deal with them in patience.

Some shudder, some hide, some dread others excel and delight in theopportunity to speak. WHY?

“Not me, I say.” WHY?How to handle those moments of impromptu-ness. Yes, they really exist inour everyday lives. Why the invited speaker may not arrive on time, evenworse, not come at all. And someone need to step up to the podium and takethe floor by storm. Or people ask me many questions after I deliver aprepared speech. Or I am on an interview panel or a open forum discussion.Or my colleagues ask me to talk on or my boss request me to report on.Impromptu situations are the norm rather than the exception.

So how might we deal with the unexpected challenge? Visualize andanticipate scenarios that might happen. Playful daydreaming with a purpose.Imagine scenarios where you could be asked to speak and prepare a smallresponse. Do it while working in the park or enjoying a morning cup ofcoffee.• Plan to prepare by exploring frameworks that you could actually use in

real situations. Let’s model this with the P.R.E.P. model – point, reason, example, point (repeated). Simple process with design and delivery inmind. State your main point and support it with a reason (or two). Give anexample and the more personal the better. Possibly a story. Then repeatand reinforce your initial point.

• Try it at your next Toastmasters meeting!• Or if its an issue or concern then reword the issue. Identify the benefits or

advantages and then immediate follow that with the opposite ordisadvantages. What next, not sure, then make your own personalrecommendation. Voila, model #2 – issue, benefits, drawbacks, recommendations. (I.B.D.R.) or if you prefer C.A.D.R. – concerns, advantages, disadvantages, recommendations.

• Remember in school, we learnt the W and H questions? Then continue touse the 5W approach:

• Who , What, When, Where, Why. We do this every meeting. Who startedToastmasters, What is Toastmasters, When did Toastmasters begin?Where did Toastmasters start? And most importantly, Why didToastmasters start? Don’t forget the odd-one-out. How will Toastmastersbenefit you?

• Too much detail to recall on the spot? Not really after you practice this afew times. And remember, include a personal story and pull on the heartstrings of your audience.

• All the best, and remember, it’s only for 1-2 minutes.
