The Latin poet Horace, known as Quintus Horatius Flaccus, was born in Venosa, a small town lost among the Southern Apennines, not too far from the cave-town of Matera, far away from Augustan Rome, in the last century of the gentile Era that subsided to the Christian Triumphs. As Horace conquered Imperial Rome with his Odes and Satires, he accumulated wisdom and wealth. He knew when the time came for him to retire to his serene, secure, and peaceful senility back to an area not too far from Rome and rich with nature's gifts. His works survived and thank to the Humanists and the Renaissance they became the patrimony of the educated gentility. Only one of all his works remains still a puzzle today, with no solution agreeably and equally accepted by scholars. This work that challenged the ingenuity of thousand scholars was written by Horace in the sweet years of his happy and most satisfying terminal period. Perhaps, he died while

working on it. This Horatian work had no title. Other friends, disciples, or admirers called it Ars Poetica. It would be more honest to call it the puzzle for wisdom or foolishness and foolhardiness. On this query thousand and thousand minds sailed, and an enormous mountain of books was written in all European Languages since the 15th century. Every inquirer looked like into a crystal as a spectrum of resplendent variety, and saw what others did see in different ways. This Grail has not been found yet. The search however has created and collected a tradition of a kaleidoscopic variety of narratives that began to appear abundantly in the 15th century and still goes on on our time. This book, in its own way, is the narrative made about the Ars Poetica of Horace by someone who knew of Horace only through the writings of Giambattista Vico and in the company of Vico travel the path to Horace and faced the puzzling query not to resolve it but in order to understand how to approach it. The vocation of this book is therefore

Otto van Veen, known as Otho Vaenius or Octavius Vaenius (c.1556-1629), was a humanist, a painter, and draughtsman in Antwerp and Brussels. He became famous for his research and collection of emblems and for having been the teacher of Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) who became a master as well in emblematics in a baroque mode. This first edition of 1607 was printed by Jerome Verdussen de Amberes (1644-1730), who began a dynasty of printers. Wikipedia says, “Verdussen was a dynasty of printers in Antwerp, starting with Hieronymus Verdussen in the late sixteenth century, and ending around 1800. Many other printers in Antwerp were also related to the Verdussens through marriage. They specialized in religious works and works in Spanish, but also published newspapers, almanachs, poetry, scientific works, .... By the end of the 17th century, he produced about 21% of the Spanish books printed in the Netherlands, and with 5 presses was second only to Moretus in Antwerp. In 1876, the Verdussenstraat (Verdussen Street) was named after the family in Antwerp.” The translation in many languages and in Spanish of the 1607 Horatii Emblemata in 1672 was in combination with the Enchiridion of Epictetus and Tabla de Cebes, with the title of Teatro

moral de la vida humana, en cien emblemas. A reprint of the 1672 appeared in 1733 by the widow of Henricus Verdussen, a descendant of Jerome. The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica wrote: “emblem book, a collection of symbolic pictures, usually accompanied by mottoes and expositions in verse and often also by a prose commentary.” Derived from the medieval allegory and bestiary, the emblem book developed as a pictorial-literary genre in 16th-century Italy and became popular throughout western Europe in the 17th century. The father of emblem literature was the 16th-century Italian lawyer and humanist Andrea Alciato (1492-1550), with the Emblemata (Latin; 1531), which appeared in translation and in more than 150 editions. The Plantin press specialized in emblem literature, publishing at Antwerp in 1564 the Emblemata of the Hungarian physician and historian Johannes Sambucus; in 1565, that of the Dutch physician Hadrianus Junius (Adriaen de Jonghe); and, at Leiden, the early English emblem book, Geoffrey Whitney’s Choice of Emblemes (1585), an anthology of emblems from Alciato, Junius, and others. English emblem books were either printed in the Netherlands or made by combining English text with foreign engravings, as in the English edition of the Amorum Emblemata, Figuris Aeneis Incisa (1608) of Octavius Vaenius (Otto van Veen), an important early Dutch emblem book.” A French book was published in 1646 by the engraver Pierre Daret (1604-1678, La Doctrine des Moeurs tiree de la Philosphie des Stoiques: representee en cent Tableaux et expliquee en cent Discours pour l’Instruction de la jeunesse, printed by Louys Sevestre. The lessons attached to the emblems were written by Basilide de Gomberville (1600-1674). In 1721, the book was translated by T. M. Gibbs, The Doctrine of Morality or A View of Human Life according to the Stoic Philosophy, Exemplified in One

FIGURE 1 Quintus Horatius Flaccus in Conversation with Friends, by the German engraver A. A. von Werner (1843-1915) 07 FIGURE 2 Q. Horatii Flacci Emblemata by Otho Vaenius.1607 12 FIGURE 3 Rien n’est beau que le Vraie (The True Alone is Beautiful) 15

The Truth (la Vérité), the object of the art of imitation, sits over a cloud, crowned with flowers by the Genies of the imagination. Poetry, accompanied by its Genies, disposes the garlands of flowers. On the right side the Muses of Epic and Tragedy appear under the drapery of Poetry; on the left side, Terror and Pity show themselves. Four philosophers or poets (Aristotle, Horace, De Vida, Despréaux) examine the vision and write down their reflections. Behind them, a Designer and a Painter work on the imitation of the Truth. Below, a group of spectators experiences, each in its own way, the emotions caused by Terror and Pity. From Les Quatre Poetiques: D’Aristote, D’Horace, De Vida, De Desprèaux, Avec les Traductions & des Remarques par M. l’Abbé Batteux, Tome Premier. A Paris, 1771. Designed by N. C. Cochin, jr in 1770. This incision was inspired by the classic models known of the physiognomy of Vico and is respectful of the essential iconographical themes. The incision was made by Paolo Caronni in 1836 and its name is under the oval portraiture. One exemplar of this incision is the library of Croce in Naples and one is in possession of Gustavo Costa, at the University of California.
