T he first ever Lambs to Leaders Telethon For Catholic Education aired Apr il 8, on Catholic Television San Antonio (CTSA) Time Warner Cable Channel 15. The event was a huge success thanks to the many pledges from YOU and oth-er generous sup-porters. WellMed Charitable Foun-dation sponsored the event along with Time Warner Cable Media Sales. In addition to spon-soring, CEO of WellMed, Bryan Grundhoefer and the WellMed Char-itable Foundation, set a matching grant chal-lenge for up to $50,000 for the Lambs to Leaders Telethon, which, in the end, was in-creased to $100,000!! Throughout the four hour live television event, schools from across the Archdiocese were represented by alumni, students, teach-ers and staff. Performances from the schools included choirs, bands, dance and cheer teams, flamenco dancers, a bell choir and a marching drumline. The Lambs to Leaders Telethon was hosted by Deacon Pat Rodgers, Director of Communication of the Archdio-cese of San Antonio and Richard Reyna of

the Guadalupe Radio Network. The energy in the building was electric and the behind the scenes support from the Telethon Committee,

led by Mary Jo Grundhoefer, was tremendous. At the end of the evening, over $200,000 had been raised for Hope for the Fu-ture, thanks in part to the WellMed Charitable Founda-tion matching grant and from many generous contribu-tors who watched on television. Still coming off the excitement from the

first year, Hope for the Future is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Lambs to Leaders Telethon from 4-8 p.m., Tuesday, April 14, 2015. The telethon will be aired on KCWX Channel 2 and CTSA TWC Channel 15, and can be viewed across the San Antonio and surrounding area. We are so thankful to have Mr. Grundhoefer and WellMed back on board for the second year. Our telethon committee will be led by board member Mary Jo Grundhoefer. Hope for the Future is anticipating another banner year, and we hope you will tune in and make a pledge for Catholic School Education!

T K&P Chairs and Honorary Chairs Vital to Success

here are numerous people behind a large event,

like the Khaki & Plaid Gala. From the event

‘Khommittee’, to day-of volunteers, sponsors,

businesses, and HOPE staff, everyone involved

has a passion for Catholic school education and

will work to make it a success.

The 2015 Khaki & Plaid

Chairs, Dave and Judy Ret-

tinger are prime examples of

a couple who believe in

Catholic schools. The Ret-

tingers have sent their four

children through Catholic

school and all have graduat-

ed from Central Catholic or

Incarnate Word High School.

Dave and Judy have been

longtime supporters of the Khaki & Plaid Gala. As

General Manger of Time Warner Media Sales, Judy

has assisted Hope for the Future numerous times in

providing advertising space and provided auction

items to the event.

Frank and Cathy

Burzik have kindly

accepted the role of

Honorary Chairs for

the gala. The Bur-

zik’s have played an

integral role with

Hope for the Future and have contributed to the

creation of ‘The Burziks’ Brightest Scholars’. A

PLANNIG FOR OUR SCHOOLS

NEWS FROM OUR SCHOOLS MUSIC TO OUR EARS Holy Name Catholic School students are bene-

fiting from a newly created music program, a

dream of Rev. Martin F. Parayno, OSB, pastor

at Holy Name parish.

“The children love singing, dancing and learn-

ing new instruments,” said Belia Gonzalez

McDonald, principal at Holy Name Catholic

School.

The band program is led by Terri Jarzombek

(Mrs. J), who is a veteran of the fine arts. Jar-

zombek has years of experience with school

choir, music programs, band, mariachi, liturgi-

cal choirs and individual lessons. Each grade

level, Pre-K3 through 8th grade, attends at least

one music class a week.

Mrs. Gonzalez McDonald says this initiative

plays a vital role for their school, “Having a

strong fine arts program will help our students

grow as part of our plan to strengthen our over-

all academic program.”

A fifth grade parent, Mrs. Gibbons said her son

was so inspired by the program that they went

out and purchased a guitar and music stand so

he could begin lessons. The next time you pass

by Holy Name Catholic School keep you ears

open for the sound of music.

BLESSED SACRAMENT FOCUSES ON

SERVICE AND STUDENT ACTIVITIES

Faith and Service are two words synonymous

with Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of

San Antonio. At Blessed Sacrament Catholic

School each instructional area has been dedi-

cated to a particular saint chosen by the class-

room. The saint’s life and charism are incorpo-

rated into the prayer space, classroom manage-

ment and environment. This year’s saints in-

clude: Sts. Ann and Joachim, St. Francis of

Assisi, San Martin de Porres, St. Catherine of

Sienna, and many more. To continue the

school’s emphasis on Service, teachers from

each grade level sought out a community or-

ganization to partner with throughout the year.

By selecting a group for an entire year, the

students can enjoy a deeper understanding for

the organizations they are helping. This year’s

organizations include: Jared Box at Methodist Children’s Hospital, Soldier’s Angels, The

Children’s Shelter, DePaul Family Center, and

more. Students will organize drives during the

holy seasons of Advent and Lent to help these

organizations. The goal is for students to see

how Christ lives in every person, regardless of

social status, age, race, nationality, gender or

economic level of living. In its mission to pro-

vide students with a variety of experiences,

Blessed Sacrament is expanding its extracurric-

ular programs. The school is offering choir,

gardening, art lessons and an engineering club.

Later in the fall opportunities for drama, chess,

guitar lessons and band will become available.

ST. LUKE CATHOLIC SCHOOL OFFERS

LEGO ENGINEERING PROGRAM

St. Luke Catholic School recently began its

Play-Well TEKnologies after school program

where students apply real-world concepts in

physics, engineering, and architecture through

engineer-designed projects such as arch bridg-

es, skyscrapers, motorized cars and more. The program, open to grades 1st-5th, consists of

eight, one and half hour sessions where stu-

dents are immersed in over 100,000 pieces of

LEGO to learn engineering fundamentals. The

hope is more students will take an interest in

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and

Math) related careers, which are in high de-

mand. St. Luke Catholic School Principal,

Marcella Salazar, says “it is a popular program

that students love.”

St. Luke second grader, Christopher, explains

why he enjoys the program, “It’s really fun

because you get to build remote control

things. You get to create things with legos

like catapults, houses, trucks, and other things,

and you get to play with each other…I really

like it.”

The program is also available at St. Thomas

More Catholic School and Blessed Sacrament

Catholic School.

In July, Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller officially appointed Marti West the new Superin-

tendent of Catholic Schools. Mrs. West has worked in the Catholic

Schools Office since 2009 and was named interim superintendent in

February of 2014.

Archbishop Gustavo said, “We sought a candidate who exhibited a

passion for Catholic education, and who would bring professional

competence and spirited vision to the position. In Marti, I believe

we have chosen a person with exceptional leadership capabilities to

lead our Catholic Schools into the future."

Mrs. West received her Bachelor of Arts in Managerial Studies from Rice University and

Masters in Teaching, Curriculum & Instruction from the University of St. Mary. She is a

product of a Catholic school education, graduating from Padua Academy in Wilmington,

Delaware. While stationed with her husband oversees, she began her teaching ministry in a

Japanese missionary school. She has worked in Catholic schools as a teacher, administrator,

instructional coach and consultant. She has been married for 25 years to Jim West and has 4

children: Rebecca, Garrett, Stephen and Emily.

In a short amount of time, Mrs. West has already made a positive impact in our Catholic

Schools. Please join Hope for the Future in praying for the continued success of our 43

Catholic Schools and for all the teachers, administrators and staff.

H ope for the Future continues to be blessed

with the support of so many individuals, foun-

dations and businesses who place a high value

on Catholic school education, much like YOU.

We are extremely grateful to have the ongoing

support of Archbishop Gustavo and his staff

along with Superintendent Marti West and the

rest of the Catholic Schools Office. May the

Lord continue to bless each of you and your

families, and all our Catholic schools.

Celebrate a Birthday and Support HOPE

While celebrating a birthday is a chance to eat

more cake, one way to celebrate and help out

Catholic schools is to donate your birthday to

HOPE. Ask your friends, family and co-

workers to make a donation to Hope for the

Future in your honor for your birthday. Thank

the Lord for another year, and know that your

birthday will benefit deserving children to

receive a fantastic Catholic school education

in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. So, be

proud of all those birthday candles!

Professional Development for HOPE Staff

Hope for the Future staff participated in a two-

day professional development conference

hosted by the Diocese of Austin. The Best

Practices summit brought together Catholic

schools from across Texas to learn the latest

and greatest techniques to better serve the

schools.

Topics included; Grant Strategies, Transfor-

mational Giving, Live Auction Strategies,

Marketing to the Latino Community and Web-

site Storytelling. The event was a fantastic few

days and many ideas were brought back to the

Hope for the Future office including new grant

writing tactics, ideas on how to make the most

out of the live auction at the Khaki & Plaid

Gala, and maximizing the talents of our team

and development board members.

Superintendent’s Transfer Grant

Hope for the Future helped roll out the Super-

intendent’s Transfer Grant across 20 schools

in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. The pro-

gram, modeled after a similar initiative in the

Diocese of Allentown, PA, offered tuition

grants to students who transferred from a pub-

lic, charter, private or home school and into a

participating Catholic school. The results to

date include 85 students transferring to a Cath-

olic school, helping to fill available seats in

grades 1st—7th and 9th—11th.

If you know of a friend, family member or co-

worker whose children could benefit from a

Catholic school education, please direct them

to www.hopeforfuture.org/transfergrant to

learn more about the program and for a list of

participating schools.

Offering Words of HOPE to Students

Longtime supporter of Hope for the Future

and Catholic school education, Roy Terrac-

ina, took time out of his busy schedule to

talk to students at St. Margaret Mary Catho-

lic School. Roy’s message to the students:

have a positive

attitude, strong

faith and make no

excuses.

Roy has made it a

point to speak to

students at various

schools over the

years. He has been

an inspiration to

students across the

area.

Thanks Roy for

being a champion

to our students

and Catholic

school education!

Alexandra Perez Senior, St. Gerard Catholic High School

Why is Catholic school education important to you? Its important to me because you not only learn the basic curriculum that you get at public school, but they also teach you about morals and about being a better person and that’s really important to me.

What is one piece of advice you would offer to incoming Freshman? Don’t be afraid to open up to people. At St. Gerard no one gets judged for who they are. Everyone is pretty close, even if people view you as “different” you still end up having a lot of friends.

What are your plans after you graduate? I want to attend Our Lady of the Lake University and earn a degree in Child Psychology. I have a younger brother and younger sister who have inspired me to help children in a professional environment. I would like to help other kids, I’ve always wanted to do that; I enjoy helping others.

YEAR END UPDATE: THE MANY BLESSINGS OF 2014

A HOPE student’s success begins with YOUR help! Please donate at: www.hopeforfuture.org

“Thanks for helping me to be at St. Matthew Catholic school and to learn more things about God, Math and Social Studies!”

Dear Friends of Hope for the Future,

Our Catholic Schools continue to serve students regardless of economic status, because of YOU. Your giving spirit allows Hope for the Future to help open doors of opportunity for more children. Many of our past HOPE recipients return to vol-unteer and give back to help current students have the same chances they received. This perpetual cycle of selfless service is exactly what our Catholic Schools teach us. Thank you for sharing your blessings and support toward the mission of Hope for the Future and our precious Catholic schools and students. I look forward to visiting and thanking you in person at our upcoming events!

Thank you and God Bless, Julie

A Note from Director, Julie Seguin

"Catholic education today is more relevant than

in any other point in recent history. Our

children need the spiritual and educational

formation Catholic education provides to

prepare them for the moral challenges they will

face in our secular society.”
