HOOSIER HOOSIER Equestrian Equestrian Newsletter of the Indiana Saddle Horse Association The Oldest All Breed & All Discipline Organization in the State of Indiana January/February 2011 Hello everyone! I hope your holiday season was as rewarding as mine was. As your new ISHA President, I am looking forward to a fun and eventful show season in 2011. This organization has a very long and successful history and I feel honored to be able to represent us as President. Thank you in advance for your support for ISHA this year! ISHA is moving forward with some new plans for 2011. Our show formats have changed over the last year and we are making further changes for this upcoming year. All horse clubs have been challenged over the last several years as economic recession has affected show entries across the board. A-rated shows are as affected as local shows. In response to the new challenges for us as a state-wide club, ISHA has decided to institute some pro-active changes that we hope will enable us to have a very successful year. We recognize that in order to survive as an organization, we must collaborate with other organizations so that we can be more effective with our resources. Consequently, we have arranged to work with both the Indiana Arabian Horse Club (IAHC) and Hartmeyer Stable and Saddlery to help keep our overhead costs down with our Spring and Fall shows this year. We will be sharing costs at the Hendrick’s County site with IAHC who is working on a planned show on Sunday, following our show. We also will be collaborating with Hartmeyers tournament show by holding our Fall show there in combination with their Fall Tournament show. We are thrilled to be working with both groups and hope that you will make every effort to attend our shows and those of our affiliates this year. Also in the works is a Speed Show to be held on Friday evening, May 20 th at the Hendricks County site. Many thanks to Katy and Kandi Allen for taking the lead here. First of all, we have moved our Spring show to the Hendrick’s County 4-H Fairgrounds and scheduled our show for Saturday, May 21 st . Later in this issue, you will see a “tentative” showbill that is a working document. Please review it carefully and feel free to contact us if you see any mistakes or want to add any classes, feel free to contact us with your suggestions! Our Fall show will be at Hartmeyer Stable and Saddlery in Muncie, Indiana, on Saturday, September 10 th . Amanda and Jane have been wonderful to work with and we are looking forward to staging a show in that part of the state for the first time in many years. As with all of our ISHA events, we need help with the in and out gates, with the office, with ring stewarding and ribbons again this year. Please consider giving us a couple of hours at each of the shows to help us make them successful Again this year, we will be raffling a miniature horse at the Hoosier Horse Fair (HHF), April 1-3. Our HHF committee will be contacting you to ask you to volunteer to work in the booth this year. ISHA will provide tickets for volunteers who give 2 or more hours. Please let them hear from you. Rob and Ruth Lickliter and Sandy Bryant are in charge of setting up and tearing down and will need help to get it done this year. Also, contact Rob or Ruth to volunteer in manning the booth. As always, remember that this is your organization. We have a very dynamic board of directors. We have some new faces this year and I’m thrilled to welcome them to ISHA’s board. As members, please remember we need your input and your ideas. Feel free to contact anyone on your board to voice your opinions, concerns or ideas. Better yet, try to attend our next meeting on February 20, at 2:00 pm at Jonathan Byrd’s Cafeteria in Greenwood, Indiana!

Dressage Show Plans 2011’s Spring Dressage show planning is under way. Once again, the show will be held on Mother’s Day Weekend at the Hoosier Horse Park in Edinburg, IN. Val Harley and her team are putting together a great event and we look forward to seeing you there. Thanks, Val, for all you do for the Dressage – Hunter/Jumper Divisions of ISHA. Griffins Help with ISHA Miniature Horse Again this Year Some of you may know that our raffle mini is being prepared by Art and Dove Griffin again this year. While they are planning a move to Virginia, they’ve kindly allowed us to leave him with them until then. What a wonderful asset the Griffin family has been for ISHA over the years! They’ve been tireless in the support they’ve shown us, not only on the board but also in all the activities ISHA stages. Thanks SOOO much Art and Dove! You will be missed. New Planning Underway for High Point Program Mary Bowen has graciously accepted the responsibility of “tweaking” the ISHA High Point Program for the arena shows. If you have any ideas or want to see any changes, please contact Mary at (812) 398-5452. Volunteers Needed ISHA again will need lots of help with its activities this year. Take some time to contact the committee chairmen and offer some time to help at the shows, the Hoosier Horse Fair or one of the other activities ISHA stages. Please feel free to comment or send in your suggestions to these classes.

As you can see, it is a very ambitious showbill and we imagine we will go well into the evening. Unfortunately, the Hendricks County Fairgrounds, like many others in the area, requires all horses who are showing to purchase a stall and not show out of your trailers. We will try to offset stall costs with sponsorship dollars but at the moment wanted you to be aware of the stall requirement.

We are looking forward to this year and are excited to be moving into a new dimension with our partners in the coming months. Thanks to every one of you who have made ISHA the organization it is today!

Re: Tributes to Dove’s Minicamelot and the perpetual trophy

We had the opportunity over the Thanksgiving Weekend to both view the award and the wording of the perpetual trophy. All we can say is WOW! This is certainly a surprise and deeply appreciated.

We have enjoyed the camaraderie and fellowship that ISHA has promoted thru good horsemanship and sportsmanship thru the years. We started with ISHA after showing miniature horses at Rosie’s Brookwood Farms Hoosier Acres shows for several years. Several members there (who for their own sake shall remain nameless) prompted Dove to join ISHA. From there we (and a few friends) started bringing minis to the ISHA shows showing in mini specific classes (halter, and some performance classes) as well as competing against the full sized horses in halter and color classes as appropriate. All in all, the minis did ok. As time progressed, both Dove and Art served in different capacities on the Board and/or as Officers. The mini’s became a fixture in the ISHA show bill, with gender specific halter, obstacle, jumping, and driving classes being included.

We have enjoyed our times spent and hope we left the organization better than when we came in. We would encourage the organization to continue to promote youth participation thru the Jr and Sr trophies at the ISHA shows, as well as the year end youth trophies. We would also encourage the organization to continue to look at the overall horse show activity and explore options such as Speed Shows or other related activities not recently under the ISHA activities.

Finally, we would encourage Mary Bowen to keep up the level of her practice as we may well show up to try to claim the perpetual trophy at least one year!

Sincerely

Art and Dove Griffin
