Hooper Highlights Mr. Michael Citta, Principal
Mrs. Mallory Kennedy, Supervisor
May-June, 2013
Dear Hooper Families,
I cannot believe another year has come and gone.
It seems to go by faster and faster as the
students continue to grow and move on. This year
your children have done an exceptional job both
academically and in maturing into fine, well
mannered young people. It truly is an honor for me
and my staff to be able to be a part of the
students’ lives. I thank you very much for your
continued support and dedication to our
educational community.
To our Fifth Graders, you have left a warm and
lasting impression on your elementary school. As we
are saddened to see you leave, just know that we
are proud and excited for you as you chase your
dreams and challenge yourselves. Intermediate
school brings many opportunities for you and I
hope that you take advantage of all of them, but
don’t forget your Husky roots.
To all our Huskies, have a safe and happy summer
and see you all in September!
Thanks,
Mr. Michael Citta, Principal
Spring Musical Concert
The Hooper chorus, concert band, and strings
players welcomed spring in musical fashion. Our
talented artists used their special “Restore the
Shore” theme to impart a message of hope and
regrowth. The fourth grade chorus is directed by
Mrs. Hull, the fifth grade chorus is directed by
Mrs. Simone, and Mr. Marowitz is the leader of
all instrumentalists.
Schedule for the Last 4 Days of the School Year
Tuesday, June 18th through Friday, June 21st:
Shortened School Days for Students
10:40AM: PM Kindergarten Arrival 11:10AM: AM Kindergarten Dismissal 1:10PM: Dismissal for all Students Have a Safe and Relaxing Summer!
Retired Hooper librarian Mrs. Ruth visited our kindergarten and first grade library classes in April. Mrs. Ruth shared her recently published story, Gorgeous Millie, with the students. Students were excited to play and sing with Mrs. Ruth as she imparted the message of the “gorgeousness” within each child.
Children are “Gorgeous”
A Fun Ice Cream Celebration
The students in Mrs. Casselli’s and Mrs. Lehman’s
classes had an ice cream celebration. The fourth
graders were celebrating all their hard work
during the NJASK. The second graders were
excited about their good manners used all year
long in their classroom called “Politeville”.
Our Class Mascot
A few weeks ago, Mrs. Donovan's third grade
class adopted a grey seal pup from the Marine
Mammal Stranding Center who they named Abby.
She was found on April 15, 2012 right near the
Barnegat Light. When she was found she weighed
52 pounds. She had a large abscess on her chin
and a deep wound with abrasions near her tail.
She was taken to the center for treatment and
once she began to heal and eat on her own, she
was tagged and released back into the ocean.
Seals sightings have become very common over
the past few years. The seals like the protection
they get from the bays, inlets and sandbars. They
are able to rest, digest their food, and sleep. Our
class is using our time in the iPad lab to research
seal behavior and habitats to create posters,
dioramas and reports on these wonderful
mammals .

Summeread For All Fifth Graders
Summer vacation presents the chance for
children to strengthen their comprehension skills,
expand their vocabulary, and develop new ways of
thinking about themselves and the world in which
they live. Students in grades 7-12 already have
experienced our Summeread program. Now, a
committee of middle school educators has
thoughtfully selected a wide variety of popular
and highly regarded young adult titles that are
appropriate for diverse reading levels. Starting
this summer, our incoming sixth grade students
will be required to complete a summer reading
assignment.
We recommend that parents and their children
work together over the summer to select a
suitable book from the sixth grade list. In June,
students will watch a promotional video in their
fifth grade classroom, highlighting the 23 books
on the list. The video will be aired over the
summer on TV-21 for parents to view.
Students are responsible for obtaining one
selected book from the sixth grade list. The book
may be borrowed from any branch of the Ocean
County Library, purchased at a retail book store
or online, or purchased for a Nook or Kindle.
During the summer, students will complete a
written assignment, which they will receive in
June. The assignment, along with the book list
and additional information, will also be posted on
the district homepage in June. It will be due on
the first day of school in September.
The main purpose of our summer reading program
is to foster a life-long enjoyment of reading and
the development of our students’ independent
reading skills. We are excited about our
expanded Summeread program and appreciate
the anticipated support from home.
Happy Reading! Christy Downs
Supervisor of Language Arts, Grades 6-8,
Toms River Regional Schools
The Hooper Husky Chorus sang the national anthem at BlueClaws Stadium on May 3, 2013.

Congratulations to all those who put forth their best effort in the program. Aloha!
Just a friendly reminder that students entering
6th grade next year need to obtain the Diphtheria
and Tetanus Toxoids and Pertussis Vaccine
(DTaP) and Meningococcal Vaccine (Menactra).
These are required immunizations needed prior to
your child starting intermediate school.
Any medications we have in the Health Office for
allergies, asthma etc. need to picked up the last
week of school.

Mrs. D’Elia’s art room welcomed the talents of
artist Helaine Rainier. Ms. Rainier is a
contemporary artist with a passion for oil painting
and Sumi-e giant brush painting. She has had her
work exhibited throughout the United States.
You can see a collection of her beautiful paintings
locally, in the Ocean County Library.
Ms. Rainier shared her talents for Sumi-e giant
brush painting with two of our art classes. Art
students learned about the history and meanings
of Sumi-e paintings. They got to see, touch and
smell the brushes, inks, stones and papers used to
create the art. She demonstrated her painting
skills and shared her love of art with us.
Thank You, Vets Members of Greenbriar Woodlands VFW
Post 8885 recently visited the fifth grade
students to share their stories of military
service. Mr. Charles Carré, who served in the
United States Army during World War II, is
pictured below showing Mr. Hynoski’s students
medals he was awarded along with foreign
currency and a German flag he acquired while on
patrol in France.
Mrs. Giannetti’s third graders are hatching
chicks! Out of 42 eggs, twelve were successful in
hatching. The students have been so excited
about the recent events taking place! They are
cleaning, feeding, holding, and caring for the
chicks quite eagerly. We are hosting five
different breeds, thanks to the help of the 4-H
Club! We will be releasing them back to 4-H
where some of them may be seen this summer at
the Ocean County Fair!
Guess What C-26 Has Been Up To?
Third Grade Writers Mrs. Whitney’s class has been very busy writing,
editing, illustrating, and typing original stories.
Every story included a teaser/summary and
“about the author” feature and was “published”
into a real hardcover book. The proud authors
presented their stories to an audience of parents
one morning in June.
Hooper Teachers Play Charity Softball Game Twenty Hooper teachers formed two softball teams and played on Friday, April 26th. Team Hooper won
by a narrow margin (11-9) after a valiant comeback effort by Team Huskies. “Boss Man” Citta had the
only home run hit of the game. A total of $2000 was raised for the American Cancer Society’s Relay
for Life.

“Dream” is a Huge Success! Mrs. Brattan’s 2nd graders, Mrs. Mackle’s 4th graders, and Mrs. Siek’s 1st graders presented an
inspirational musical program to the Hoop’s faculty, students, and parents in June. Dream portrays the
hopes and wishes of children for their future.
First Graders Salute the U.S.A. In May, all six first grade classes participated in the school’s traditional 1st Grade Patriotic Program.
