Rev.Bryan Jones is a community leader with an established reputation for creating dynamic programs addressing the needs of underrepresented youth. He is an effective grass-roots organizer with proven ability to build consensus among diverse stakeholders.
He has been an active minister at New Mount Pleasant MBC for over 7 years, and has facilitated the Youth Ministry, Young Adult Choir and other youth programs. He has nearly a decade of experience as a social worker, supporting his client’s success. He serves as a role model and mentor, through his foundation and ministry. Where there is need, he takes action. Where there is success, he celebrates. As a young man he was an active gang member in South Central Los Angeles, and after facing a life-affirming event, he became a voice for a new generation of youth who seek a positive direction.
Deacon Timothy Griffith is originally from Danville, Virginia, and has lived in Los Angeles for over 12 years. As a co-founder of H.O.O.P., he draws upon his 15+ years of experience working with youth as a teacher, mentor and coach. He develops rapport and brings out the best in those he works with.
“Though Los Angeles youth face many of the same obstacles that children in other areas share, it’s multiplied times five. The foster care numbers, teen incarceration and death rates are staggering! Yet, they are some of the most talented and dedicated young people you’ll ever meet.” He seeks to further enhance the H.O.O.P. vision through creative planning and addressing the needs of youth in Los Angeles. He has been elected the Sunday School Superintendent at New Mount Pleasant MBC where he leads youth in workshops. His lifelong mission is to outreach to youth, and have an impact on youth services locally and nationally.
Core Programs
Mentor Program Emancipation Project Youth Re-entry Program Athletics & Performing Arts
Mentoring Youth We take a holistic approach to address the needs of youth from providing health & wellness workshops, teaching life-skills, goal assessment & guidance, social activities, educational advising, employment services, and spiritual awareness
When you provide youth with opportunities to grow and learn, they rise to your expectations
We have successfully graduated youth from our program who have completed high school/GED programs, enrolled in college, and become role models for other youth
Emancipation Project Youth emancipating from the foster care system are at great risk for living in poverty, involvement in crime, poor health and underemployment
Providing a safe heaven for youth in foster care and “aging out” of the foster care system, we will develop independent living skills and build a support system that will have dramatic effect for future success
It takes a village to raise a child
Youth Re-entry Program We work with youth ex-offenders, and in the Juvenile
Justice system, to provide a positive foundation to achieve future goals. This includes developing life skills, career exploration, housing search, linking to other services and follow-up
Youth seek social validation and opportunities for self-improvement. The stigma of conviction closes many doors and creates a revolving door in the justice system. We seek to build self-esteem and open awareness to individual potential. We will develop partnerships to support youth entering school, employment and housing
What you water grows. We will make a difference in the lives of youth ex-offenders by establishing a foundation
for success!
Athletics & Performing Arts
We will have many artistic and creative outlets for youth, including art, music and dance. We have received a donation of music and recording equipment, to create a music program.
We have a successful basketball team who play against other local teams. Athletics provides a opportunity to improve health, team-building and have fun!
Fostering the imagination has a profound impact on youth. When you can dream it, you can make it happen. Building health through exercise establishes early healthy habits.
H.O.O.P. Events
Youth Magic Weekend in June ‘08
A three-day event that brought youth together to socialize and have great
time!
- We began with a movie screening of an inspirational documentary about young people overcoming obstacles
- The next day we hosted a basketball game with about 40 youth an attendance
- On the final day we hosted a successful Scholarship Luncheon with 75 youth in attendance
Our future… H.O.O.P. was established to identify the needs of young
people, and develop comprehensive programs that directly address the immediate issues facing youth today
We will build on the success of our programs and continue to outreach & involve new people
We seek to be a vital resource in Los Angeles and develop community partnerships
