Have you already stocked up with the cupboard basics , chosen your Christmas decorations and bought most of your presents? No, me neither!
Its crazy isn’t it? We know that it happens every year and yet for most of us Christmas suddenly seems to be on us and we nd that ,once again, there is little time to get everything done thatneeds to be done, on top of our everyday lives. Then we start to grumble about everything thatneeds doing and the fact that the shops werealready displaying Christmas items in October orhow our sister is so annoyingly more organizedthan we are…etc etc and we lose sight of the fun
and joy of Christmas, amidst the piles of garish wrapping paper and plastic shopping bags.
This can be how we live our lives. Caught up with the minutia of everyday chores and gettingour jobs done, it is easy to become so busy that we miss out on the very celebration of life; of what it means to be alive and how it feels to be brimming with so much joy and happiness thatevery day feels like the most precious blessing.
At one of the busiest times of year I invite you
to create space for you and your family. Thisdoesn’t simply mean allocating more time in your diary but it means being fully attentive with the people you love. You may be rushingin from the shops with a load of shopping and your partner needs your attention. Put downthe shopping and really be with them. Givethem your full attention. If something is urgent,(maybe you want to get the frozen stuff into the
freezer rst!) then acknowledge their requestand let them know, really know for certain, that they will have your full attention in twominutes…and keep your word. Be fully attentiveand with them within the two minutes or within whatever time you promised them.

To slow down enough so that you can actually stop and be fully with another person is goingto take three things : trust and planning and willingness. You have to be able to trust that, one way or another, everything will get done. It may not be exactly as you would like it to be done butit will get done. Can you let go of your need forperfection?
The trick is to empty your head into your diary where you schedule everything that needs doing. Then once you know that its all covered you can be totally present in the moment that you share with another.
Finally why would you be willing to make theeffort? Why would you want to have enoughspace in your life to actually stop and really listen to someone else? Well that’s the easy question. When you are fully with another
person , whoever they are, you will discover thelove that lls in all the cracks in your life. When you give up your busyness, you will discoverhow connected you are to everyone else. When you slow down long enough to listen , you willuncover the true miracle that is your life. Trustme and try it this Christmas…you may just havethe time of your life!
Happy Christmas!

Cyclamen have lovely marbled green leaves whichcontrast well with the goldenand green foliage of evergreenshrubs such as Elaeagnus xebbingei Limelight or the
yellow leaved Choisyaternata Sundance. Plantsome around the shrubfor winter interest andadd some small daffodilsand crocuses for colourin February. Enjoy the
beauty of frost on the leavesof plants such as the robustpurple leaved Heucheras, holly or the indestructible
Euphorbia robbiae.
If you want scent in winter I recommend the winter box, Sarcococcahookeriana or confusa
varieties. Theseunassuming little shrubshave evergreen foliage andhighly scented tiny whiteowers in winter so put a
couple near your door or in an
enclosed spot and you will be rewarded withscent in January or February. The evergreenshrub Skimmia japonica also has slightly fragrant owers, owers over winter and will
tolerate almost any position in sunor shade.
Jobs to do in Decemberinclude digging over the vegetable bed and adding
a layer of organic matter
on the surface of the soilto rot down over winter.I would also recommendthat you mulch the ower
borders in winter. Use well rotted manure, or
rotted green waste which can be bought from garden centres
or your local recyclingcentre. Put a layer about
2ins deep around all your
plants. This will act as a blanket keeping the soilfurther down, unfrozenduring freezing
weather. Many plants were killed last winter
because their roots werefrozen for long periods of
time and a layer of mulchcan help protect the more
tender plants.Prune overgrown shrubs whilst the leaves are
off the plants and youcan see the old andnew growth. Plant out
bare rooted trees orroses once they arrive,
provided the soil is notfrozen.

This year I have come across have a very simple but dramatic idea. Tore-set the nativity in modern professions and high street fashions.Shepherds become cycle couriers and plasterers. Wise men aresuccessful entrepreneurs and their gifts are iconic ‘treasures’ of modern culture: a Swarovski crystal perfume bottle, a Faberge egg and a
replica Damian Hirst skull. All are ‘sharply dressed’. But the traditionalnativity arrangement is unchanged, with Jesus as its clear focus. And themessage is compelling: ‘However you dress it up.... Christmas Starts withChrist’. It’s the meeting of Christianity and high street consumerism, withChrist in the middle.
Many people today do not have even a basic grasp of the facts of theChristmas Story, whilst conversely for many Christians it has become sofamiliar that it is hard for us to experience it afresh. This year I want to invite into the dramatic eventsand stories around the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. With the help of the ‘The Christmas Experience’, thestory will be told in real-time, you can follow the dramatic last week of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection
with a series of free messages via text, email or twitter. All this will start on 19th December and reach adramatic climax on Christmas Day a week later, the amazing Christmas story will unfold by telling thestory in an ‘as-it-happens’ way from the perspective of the Bible characters, be it Mary & Joseph, the innkeeper or the shepherds sent in 30 messages to your phone, smart-phone or computer. Each messageis sent at the time the events would have happened as if from observers witnessing the story 2000 yearsago. To get involved throughout the week follow me on twitter _andyglover and/or visit the HooleBaptist Church facebook page and you’ll nd me details of how to follow the story, so come and join me in what is the most amazing week in human history!

What makes this a special event is that it will be part of a World Record Attempt, we are churches and individuals up and down the country who will take part inan attempt to smash the current World Record for the largest number of people singing carols togetheracross multiple locations. Altogether we need 15,000 people to join in for 15-mins of carolling, to includeSilent Night, O Come All Ye Faithful , O little Town of Bethlehem, Away in a Manger and Hark the Herald Angels Sing. Maybe here in Hoole we could gather 200 of us to be a part of this amazing World Recordattempt and get ourselves in the Guinness Book of World Records for 2012!! What don’t you pop alongand get involved….
Finally may I wish you all and very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and during this Christmasseason, may you be blessed with the spirit of the season, which is peace, the gladness of the season, whichis hope, and the heart of the season, which is love.
