Respectfully,

Nicholas R. JohnsenDirector of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation

June brings back the memories of a warm and fun fi l led summer with lots of water activities. I espe-cially liked the thrill of jumping into a northern Idaho lake to discover that it was still freezing, given the snow run off from that winter. Sure made a quick swim-mer out of most of us in those parts. Here we have BLORA (Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area) and your opportunity to do the same! The lake actually gets very pleasant as we move into July/August. Please remember that while participating in a water activity that drinking does not mix!! So save yourself and your BFF by stick-ing to non-alcoholic drinks. Also don’t forget to apply plenty of sunscreen so you can minimize your risk to mela-noma and the painful experience of sunburn. Take a moment on June 6 to reflect upon the Normandy Invasion, and say thanks to those who continue to serve and protect us in Afghanistan and other foreign soils so that we remain free and safe. Be safe this sum-mer and take advantage of all the out-door activities that are available for your recreational use.

I have been hearing much talk about this new high tech bingo and I am not exactly sure what it is. Could someone please elaborate?

Jan Steinberg

Dear Jan,

What you are referring to is iBingo. Elec-tronic bingo takes away the stress of keep-ing up with bingo cards, chips, and mark-ers. It is played on touch-screen handheld devices that are located at Phantom War-rior Lanes (Clear Creek Rd at Santa Fe Ave, Bldg 49010). You can check out your de-vice from the cashier and then pre-load it with the number of bingo cards you select. You can play as long as you like and then return the unit to the counter to collect your bingo winnings. For more informa-tion give Phantom Warrior Lanes a call at 254-287-3424.

Recreation

Central Texas is known for its beauti-ful lakes and rivers, which provide hours of fun. Summer is the perfect opportu-nity to reconnect and really take time to discover who we are again. This often in-volves road trips, getting your feet wet and letting your hair down! There are many great destinations nearby and Family and MWR has the resources to help any travel-er. No matter how adventurous or where your travels may take you, be sure to make this a summer to remember! For many, the first stop is Fort Hood Recreational Equipment Checkout, conve-niently located on Clear Creek Rd. in the same building as Leisure Travel Services. They have a huge variety of campers and pop-ups, as well as fishing boats with mo-tor’s and trailers, canoes, Flat bottom boats with oars, camping gear, and all kinds of sporting goods. In addition, REC rents in-flatables for birthdays, block parties or any occasion. Renting a camper is very af-

fordable and easy to do, so if you are all about convenience then this is the way to go. The campers are fully furnished, air-conditioned and ready to roll! The helpful staff REC is always happy to suggest differ-ent campsites both on and off the beaten path. With your camper reserved, you can walk next door to Leisure Travel Services to formulate a game plan. LTS has every-thing from discounted tickets for Killeen area fun to discounted tickets and pack-ages for attractions and amusement parks in Houston, Corpus Christi/South Padre, San Antonio, Arlington, Dallas/Ft Worth and more. The next stop is the Sportsmen’s Cen-ter on Rod and Gun Club Loop, 53rd Street and Murphy Rd. Hunting, fishing and ar-chery is the focus there and they provide great opportunities for all levels of sports-men, including amazing skeet and archery ranges. The pro shop carries a wide vari-ety of equipment as well as bait, state hunt-

ing and fishing licenses as well as Fort Hood hunting and fishing permits. Breakfast and lunch are great there and provide a chance to grab a bite with friends and Family. For those of you who prefer to stay closer to home for your getaways, take a short trip to Belton Lake Outdoor Recre-ation Area. BLORA is an amazing place with opportunities for everything from primitive campsites and RV hoop-ups to charming, completely furnished one and two bedroom cottages with unbelievable views of Belton Lake. BLORA is truly a treasure and offers waterslides and swimming, horseback rid-ing, paintball, and mountain bike and nature trails. Whether staying long term or just a day of swimming, fishing and paddle boat-ing, this place can’t be beat. I hope this has given you some insight on how to plan your very own summer adventures in the Great Outdoors of Texas! Happy Trails! w e all dream about IT, study about IT and many of us have fought for IT. What is IT? IT is the ideal of living in the land

of FREE and the home of the BRAVE! Without IT, we would not have the freedoms that we enjoy today. IT is because of our undivided patriotism and pride for the greatest country in the world that we a have a day to celebrate - Independence Day. Around Fort Hood, we have associated Independence Day with the most spectacular celebration and festival in Central Texas, Freedom Fest. Freedom Fest 2011 will not disappoint as Family and MWR continue to bring astounding entertainment to the entire military community. With a full day of fun activities for the whole Family, a concert featuring the nationally renowned Swing group, Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, and ending with an unbelievable fireworks show, Freedom Fest is an event like none other. Initially conceived as an iconoclastic response to the grunge movement of the Pacific Northwest, the Daddies’ music is a mix of swing, rock and ska.

While the band’s early work was heavily rooted in funk rock and punk, their eclectic studio albums have since incorporated influences from many genres of popular music and Americana into their sound, most prominently rockabilly, glam rock, psychedelia, rhythm and blues, country, worldbeat, jazz and soul. After years of extensive touring within the third wave ska scene, the Daddies ultimately broke into the musical mainstream with their swing-based compilation “Zoot Suit Riot” (1997). Released at the onset of the late 1990’s swing revival, “Zoot Suit Riot” went on to sell over two million copies in the United States while its eponymous single became a radio success, launching the Daddies to the forefront of the retro-swing genre, a perceived pigeonholing the band openly denounced in favor of their ska and punk influences. The Freedom 5K Run/Walk kicks off the holiday with a competitive run, down Fort Hood’s main streets. The run begins at 8 am from Abrams Physical Fitness Center (62nd Street and Support Avenue,

Page 9: Hood Happenings June 2011

Bldg 23001). Registration is free and open to the public. Participants may stop by any of the Fort Hood physical fitness centers now through the day of the race or log on to www.hoodmwr.com to register. Trophies will be awarded for the best overall male and female times. Medals will also be awarded to 1st - 3rd place finishers, in each age category. For more information about the race, call 254-285-5459. After the run, head home and pick up the Family (if they weren’t in the race as well) and get ready for a day chocked full of fun. The gates for Freedom Fest open at 1 pm with live musical entertainment, a free carnival and static military displays. Don’t forget about the amazing festival food or the always entertaining HEB buggy cart races. Also, check out the 50-gun salute and military dogs and handlers performance. After all what is Independence Day without fireworks? Come out and end your day with a 30-minute fabulous

firework show choreographed to patriotic music. For those looking to celebrate Freedom Fest at Fort Hood, we encourage you to plan ahead to avoid the rush. For your convenience, there will be on and off-post pick-up locations, to transport you right to the stadium. Off-post locations will be: Killeen, Ellison and Shoemaker High Schools. amily and MWR Command along with exclusive sponsors SHARP and Navy Federal Credit

Union proudly present the U.S. Army Soldier Show, a 90 minute live musical performance at Abrams Physical Fitness Center on July 7 and 8. Come and watch extraordinarily gifted Soldiers perform different music genres and cultures from around the world. This is a true treat that has something that everyone will enjoy! On July 7 and 8, the cast and crew of the 2011, U.S. Army Soldier Show will travel to Fort Hood and transform, Abrams Physical Fitness Center into a grand concert hall. The show is free and open to all, and patrons are guaranteed to be jamming right along with the performers

of this show. The performances span a variety of genres of music, so don’t be surprised if you hear a song or two from some of this past year’s popular movies in addition to some oldies. The Soldier Show will have live music and singing throughout that will move you to dance in the aisles. The show is so good that it will be playing for two days on Fort Hood and you may even want to see it twice! Although many of the Soldier performers are excited about the opportunity to expand on their craft and entertainment training, by playing the various instruments, they are even more excited about the opportunity to give back to their fellow Soldiers and their Family members.

For all of you Soldiers (Active Duty, U.S. Army Reserve, U.S. Army National Guard), with sufficient time in service remaining, who feel that you have what it takes to go up against some of the best talent in the Army, check out the US Army Soldier Show auditions. Submissions must be received by January 18, 2012, but in consideration of deployments and mission requirements, exception to policy requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis. The top candidates are then brought to Fort Belvoir for a six-day live audition/evaluation process and narrowed down until the final cast is selected. For more audition information visit http://www.armymwr.com/recleisure/entertainment/soldiershow/. For more information about the

Outdoor

A re you looking for a place to “have a ball”? Look no further than BLORA paintball fields, enjoy time outdoors while you

show your friends just who is the best shot in the group. Come out and experience the exhila-ration of competing in a game of strategy, athleti-cism and technical skill. The paintball course is located off of Liberty Hill Road next to the entrance to BLORA. The course offers five different fields of play, ranging from speedball to woodsball. Speedball is the type of paintballing most non-initiated people will recognize, it is known for its symmetrical playing fields consisting of cover created from inflatable bunkers or other structures. Wood-sball is played in more natural terrain forcing the players to find cover in the environment. Whichever variant you choose to play BLORA’s paintball course will offer a great time. Paint-balling may seem like a strictly off work hobby, however many units on post have taken advan-tage of the lessons and skills that are exhibited during a day on the paintball course. Compa-nies on post have been known to participate in games to increase teamwork and group cohe-sion, as well as have an interesting place for a Company gathering. The field is open Saturday and Sunday from 10 am - 6 pm and Monday - Friday by appoint-ment only. All fields are outdoors so weather is

a factor for availability. Players must be at least 10 years of age, individuals 10 - 17 years of age must have a legal guardian’s signature to play. Prices are $30 per person, which includes the marker (gun), a hopper to carry your paintballs, safety gear (includes mask), unlimited air and 500 paintballs. Group rates are available for $25 per person. If you have your own paint-ball equipment which consists of a marker, hop-per, and safety equipment it is $25 per person. Drinks are available at the course, food is not served, however outside food is allowed. If you are a beginner interested in getting started in the world of paintball, or even a play-er with years of experience, BLORA paintball course has something to offer you, so come down and get in the game!

A ROCK SOLIDAttraction

hould you believe in the haunted tales, we have one that is worth listening to. The local Comanche and Tonkawa Native American tribes

both feared and revered a 425-ft high batholith, which has come to be known as “Enchanted Rock”. The massive pink granite slab has been rumored to be a mystical and haunted place for hundreds of years. Many stories have been told about the rock and its surrounding area ranging from Native American sacrifices to ancient buried treasures. It has even been said that those attempting to climb the rock with negative intentions will be cursed. Not every story told was untrue, however a plaque near the summit immortalizes one such event. In 1841 Captain Jack Hays of the Texas Rangers was cut off from his company and pursued by Comanche warriors to the rock, where he made managed to survive by hiding in one of the many crevasses. The rock covers over 640 acres and is located between Gillespie and Llano Counties.

The park in which it’s located is host to many activities; camping and backpacking are the most popular among them. The trail to the summit is a well worn and popular path. If you’re not drawn to the rock for its mysterious and otherworldly history; then you will be more than pleased to observe the beautiful and varied wildlife and vegetation. The park is a famous spot for bird watching and the rock is home to brightly colored iguanas and other lizards. The Summit Trail has become so popular that the park occasionally has to close down around 11 am and reopen later in the day. Whether you believe in the haunted tales of the rock or just want to experience a gorgeous natural wonder, you will not leave without knowing why it is called “Enchanted Rock”. For more information on trips to the Enchanted Rock stop by Leisure Travel Services (Bldg. 136, 761st Tank Battalion, next to Military Clothing Sales), call 254-532-5292 or log on to www.hoodmwr.com. s

ticks and Stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me,” is a familiar childhood chant, but unfortunately, very untrue. In fact, verbal/

emotional abuse is an insidious form of domestic abuse that can have more grave, long-lasting, effects than physical abuse. Emotional abuse is more than just verbally berat-ing one’s partner or children. It is the pervasive pattern of chipping away at the self-esteem, self-worth, or inde-pendence of another person. It includes such behaviors as yelling, name-calling, intimidation/menacing behaviors, isolation and blaming. It creates a climate of fear in which the abuser has the control and the victim lives in fear and shame. The victim may doubt their own abilities to make decisions and feel as if there is no way out as the abuser has led them to believe that they will not be able to make it on their own and that they are worthless.

Sticks and Stones

by Leslie Brown

While emotional abuse is often a hidden form of abuse, there are signs when emotional abuse is present. The victim may be restricted from spending time or com-municating with friends and Family or other social out-lets. The victim may have very low self-esteem which is a marked change if they use to be confident and out-going. Depression, anxiety, and even suicidal behaviors may also be displayed. Because of the components of emotional abuse like financial abuse, the victim may not have access to financial resources, credit or even be able to use the car.If you are a victim of domestic abuse or you know some-one that is in an abusive relationship, there is help avail-able. Listen to them and validate their experience with your support. The Army Community Service, Family Advocacy Pro-gram-Victim Advocacy Crisis Line is available 24 hours a day to confidentially speak with an advocate for support, safety, resource information and to report abuse (restrict-ed and unrestricted) at 254-702-4953. Please call the Fort Hood Family Advocacy Program Care Line to make an un-restricted spouse abuse report at 254-287-CARE (2273). s

*A*P*S (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors) will host its 3rd AnnualFort Hood Survivor Seminar for adults and Good Grief Camp for children

this summer, July 7-9. Families of our Fallen Military Heroes are welcome to join us for a weekend of care, comfort and fun while connecting with other Survivors from the area. All Families are welcome, no matter the relationship to the Fallen Hero or the circum-stances of the death. T*A*P*S Good Grief Camp for children and teens provides a safe and support-ive atmosphere to conduct activities and opportunities to learn coping skills, estab-lish and identify support systems and create awareness that they are not alone in the grief of their loved one. Children and teens meet others of their own age group to share and learn, together. Each child will be paired with an active duty military member from the Fort Hood community that will be their trained mentor, acting as a big brother/sister and buddy for the weekend, letting them know the military has not forgotten about them. These conferences provide Families with a wealth of information, resources and personal contact with fellow Survivors in a spirit of friendship and under-standing. Survivors can attend workshops designed to help you heal and cope with life after loss. We have gentle, supportive discussions allowing you to share and discover that you are not alone. We conduct memorial tributes, allowing us to honor our loved ones as we connect with others to find hope and healing. Join us as we “Remember the Love, Celebrate the Life and Share the Journey!” This event is free of charge to all of our Survivors and accommodations will be provided to those who do not live in our area and are driving more than an hour away. Founded out of tragedy in 1994, T*A*P*S has established itself as the front line resource to the families and loved ones of our military men and women. T*A*P*S provides ongoing emotional help, hope, and healing to all who aregrieving the death of a loved one in military service to America, regardless of rela-tionship to the deceased, geography, or circumstance of the death. T*A*P*S meets its mission by providing peer-based support, crisis care, casu-alty casework assistance, seminar and camps, and grief and trauma resources. If you are suffering the loss of a military loved one, or if you know someone who can use support, please call 1-800-959-TAPS (8277) or visit www.taps.org. s

ort Hood’s SKIESUnlimited program is truly soaring! SKIESUnlimited stands for the Schools of Knowledge, Inspiration,

Exploration & Skills and provides Instructional Programming for youth six weeks to 18 years. This Child, Youth & School Services program has many new instructional classes in Martial Arts, Sign Language, Dance, Music and much more. For your convenience, Karate, Dance and Art classes are now available at the Cordovan Art School in Harker Heights. These classes will also be offered on site at several of our Fort Hood Elementary Schools to provide an opportunity for children to participate after school without parents having to worry about the additional burden of transporting them back and forth to a class location. We are excited about offering these new options to parents so everyone has an opportunity to participate in our fun and educational Instructional Programs. Children with a deployed parent are entitled to $300 in FREE SKIESUnlimited classes during the length of deployment (children must be registered with CYS Services and provide a copy of deployment orders).

In order to better serve, Child, Youth and School Services, SKIESUnlimited program now offers Visual art classes for children on the Autism spectrum. This class is designed so that children with Autism can explore the world of art and feel comfortable approaching the experience. The instructor will have a set of project options and different media available to choose from to accommodate the varying needs of the children in the class. This will allow them to get messy or stay clean, touch or mold, draw or paint. Art is an exciting avenue for children to communicate, explore sensory experiences and express themselves. Classes are held at Cordovan Art School in Harker Heights. Classes are for children ages 4-12 and are only $55 per month for up to 2 children per family. Please call the SKIESUnlimited office for more information, at 254-287-4592, email [email protected] or sign-up for CYS Services online at https://webtrac.mwr.army.mil/webtrac/hoodcyms.html or at Parent Central Services in the Rivers Bldg 121. hank goodness for summer break because sometimes we all just need a break. The kiddos get a break from school, and the parents…well, parents don’t always get a break, but here’s the

good news! Chaffee Child Development Center offers an opportunity for parents to get a break this summer from kiddos between the ages of 6 weeks to 5 years, and has an exciting new way for parents to learn about the hourly care program and policies! Chaffee CDC now offers parents the option of completing parent orientation online during a time that’s convenient for you. Got about 20 minutes to spare between cleaning up after dinner and putting the kids to bed? Then you have time to complete parent orientation online!

Rather than taking time out of your already busy schedule during the day to get this task accomplished, we’ve created an online version that contains all the same information presented during an in-person orientation session and made it into an easy to read and follow format. Technology-based information sharing is the wave of the future and the intent is to develop an online orientation based system for all Child, Youth & School Services programs. Of course, Chaffee CDC still offers in-person orientation sessions and is always available for facility tours. If you’re a first time hourly care user and are interested in completing parent orientation online, contact the CYSS Parent Central Services office at 254-287-8029 for all of the scoop! s

AAFES

ith June being National Safety Month, AAFES is committed to doing their share to keep our Mil-itary Patrons safe and healthy. The Exchange is

supporting the military’s mission to reduce motorcycle-related injuries and deaths among service members by offering a one-time 20 percent discount off of one Per-sonal Protection Equipment (PPE) item to cyclists that successfully complete their locally required motorcycle safety riding course. The Exchange’s Senior Enlisted Advisor Chief Jef-fry Helm said “Through this initiative, the Exchange is playing a large role in ensuring the safety and well be-ing of service men and women.” The PPE program was first tested here at Fort Hood and proved so success-ful it was expanded throughout the United States and Europe in 2010. Since the PPE program has rolled out,

military cyclists are now better equipped to meet local riding requirements. The Exchange sells PPE, to include helmets, gloves, protective eyewear and body armor in 136 facilities worldwide as well as online at www.shop-myexchange.com. Products sold through this program meet the highest safety standards to include all military specs and European and Pacific testing standards. The Exchange Online Mall is the place to find that hard to find motorcycle gear through such popular retailers as Black Hawk Customs and Cycle Gear offering special military discounts to authorized Exchange shoppers. Summer is a time for fun and building happy memories with friends and family, but remember “Think Safety” not only in the month of June but throughout the year. You are not replaceable! Don’t become a statistic. s
