Her hands were stained by oil used to lubricate and cool the metal during the
grinding process, Noted by the Des Moines Register in their 1943 feature article about honoree. Typical of her
strong attitude, at the age of 24, she went to work at the John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo, IA on February 3, 1943. She operated a large grinder to make aircraft parts to support the war effort. She quit
her job at the Rath Packing Co. after learning that her fiancee was missing in
action in Africa.

Technician 5th grade. Reported for duty on May 29, 1941 and was stationed in Algeria with the 34th infantry Division.
Assigned to a Medical Detachment, 3rd Battalion, 168th combat team. Participat-ed in the Battle of Sidi Bou Zid and was captured by the Germans at Faid Pass in North Africa on February 17, 1943. He re-mained a POW at Stalag IIIB, Furstenberg
(ODER), Germany until he was selected for a prisoner exchange in January 1945.
He was Repatriated in February 1945.
