WELCOMEFrom Our Board Chair & Executive Director
Dear Friends,
On behalf of our Board of Directors, our gala committee and the entire staff at Pacific House, we thank you for joining us at our 16th Annual Pacific House Gala.
Tonight we celebrate your impact on our past, our present and our future. We will honor Alice Melly with the 2017 Foundation Award for her help in establishing Pacific House 35 years ago and her enduring support throughout the years. We will present First Congregational Church of Darien with the 2017 Community Award for their outstanding ongoing service and dedication to the organization.
Tonight is a chance to shine a light on the tremendous impact Pacific House is having on homelessness in Fairfield County. Chronic homelessness has been eliminated in our area. Young adults who have nowhere to go can now turn to the Pacific House Young Adult Program for food, shelter, and services to help get their lives back on track. Five beautiful homes are now providing permanent supportive housing for 65 formerly homeless individuals.
Your generosity makes all of this possible.
Tonight we will take a glimpse at our future. Our commitment to creating deeply affordable housing continues, with three more homes in development. Improved diversion programs, inter-agency coordination and Pacific House’s tireless commitment to solutions are having a tremendous impact; the organization is on a trajectory of achievement without parallel in our history.
5
Tonight we honor you for recognizing that helping those in need makes a future brighter for us all. Proceeds from this event will support the Pacific House emergency shelter. The shelter operates every day of the year, 24 hours a day, feeding and housing up to 100 or more homeless men and young adults per night. In 2016 the shelter served nearly 50,000 meals and provided 25,000 bed-nights to almost 400 men and young adults. Additionally, the shelter offers case management services, access to healthcare, and programs such as our Young Adult Program, Recovery Program, and Job Readiness Training. Shelter case managers work with each individual, helping them reach the goal of obtaining housing and becoming more self-sufficient.
We thank you for joining us on this memorable evening. We extend a special thanks to our gala sponsors, whose invaluable support is a key ingredient in tonight’s success. We look forward to your continued partnership in helping Pacific House end homelessness in Fairfield County.
Together we’re transforming lives.

Alice MellyRecipient of the Foundation Award
The Foundation Award is given each year to the person who best personifies the values of caring and generosity; foundations of work done at Pacific House.
To say that Alice Melly is a long-time supporter of Pacific House is an understatement. She has been there since the beginning, supporting us when we were just a makeshift shelter in the basement of First
Congregational Church in Stamford.
Her involvement did not stop there. In addition to serving on the Pacific House Board for several terms, she has consistently contributed to the organization for over three decades. Alice still attends board meetings and carefully reviews board minutes. She still serves dinner at the emergency shelter regularly, where clients look forward to her specialty dessert: ice cream.
Alice’s lifelong devotion to helping nonprofits and community service began as a Girl Scout and Brownie! She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Spirit of Greenwich Award and Courage in Government Award. She has served on multiple boards and committees for organizations such as the Junior League of NYC and Greenwich, Greenwich Audubon, Greenwich Library, the Bruce Museum of Art and Science and River House. Alice served on the Pacific House Board, and currently serves on our Advisory Board.
Alice believes that when you’re off the board you have to stay connected; that it’s important to go to as many events as you can to evaluate them, and to mix and mingle with people that are involved with the organization. She understands that by being in the know she can share information and make connections with others to advance the Pacific House mission.
Tonight we are thrilled to honor Alice’s dedication and compassion. She has made a positive difference in the lives of thousands of clients over the past 35 years. Her energetic and extensive volunteer efforts, and her extraordinary financial generosity have made Alice a legend here at Pacific House.

First Congregational Church of DarienRecipient of the 2017 Community Award
The Community Award is given each year to an organization offering extraordinary generosity, compassion and encouragement to the clients of Pacific House.
First Congregational Church of Darien is a traditional Congregational Church, with roots dating back to the early 1700’s. The church is a welcoming and accepting community, and as a spiritual home, First
Congregational Church of Darien’s hallmarks are education, fellowship and pastoral care.
It is a church of conscience, unafraid of the issues of today and serving as a reconciling force among different faiths. First Congregational Church of Darien has a strong commitment to our local and global communities.
For over 25 years, the church has steadfastly supported Pacific House through volunteer efforts and with substantial financial support. The congregation has donated in excess of $116,000 to support the Pacific House emergency shelter. Special collections, such as during their Christmas Concert, have helped to provide numerous nutritious meals for the hungry and homeless men and young adults who come to Pacific House. This generosity has made a difference in many lives.
The 2017 Community Award recognizes First Congregational Church of Darien for their tremendous support.

Bobby ValentineMaster of Ceremonies
Bobby Valentine is a Connecticut native, growing up in Stamford where he was the only three-time All-State football player in state history at
Rippowam High School. One of the best athletes from Connecticut of the 20th century, as voted by Sports Illustrated, he was selected fifth in the first round of the 1968 amateur baseball draft by the Los Angeles
Dodgers. Valentine made his MLB debut September 2, 1969, versus the New York Mets, a club he would go on to manage.
Valentine spent 10 seasons in the major leagues, playing for the Dodgers, San Diego Padres, California Angels, Mets and Seattle Mariners. He appeared in 639 games, played every position except pitcher and hit .260 over the course of his career.
Upon retirement, Valentine remained in baseball, making his major league managerial debut in 1985 with the Texas Rangers, and in 1986, Valentine took over the Mets. He led the squad to back-to-back postseasons, including a 2000 World Series appearance. He managed the Boston Red Sox in 2012, and has 1,186 major league managerial victories under his belt.
He has seen success in the business arena as well. Since 1980, he has owned and operated Bobby Valentine’s Sports Gallery Café in Stamford. He opened a franchise in partnership with Sportech Venues, Inc., co-founded the Shin Taku Juko School in Japan, started the Makuhari Media production company and in 2011 Valentine was named Stamford’s Director of Public Safety. In 2013, Valentine assumed the role of executive director of athletics at Sacred Heart University, raising the visibility of Pioneer athletics during his tenure.
Valentine is known for his philanthropy. It would be impossible to enumerate the many examples of his generosity, but one that stands out is his response to 9/11, when he worked relentlessly commanding an emergency staging area at Shea Stadium.
Valentine is married to Mary Branca, the daughter of former Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca, and they have a son, Bobby Jr.

Thank you to all who prioritize service to others as part of the David Mond Leadership Group.
Meal service at Pacific House continues to be a shining example of our community’s caring and generous spirit, and is deeply appreciated by
the men and young adult clients at the shelter.
I am so proud of the members of the Greenwich High School Help for the Homeless Club led by teacher Jessica Keller, and the parents and adult group leaders, who help students plan, purchase, prepare and
serve dinner at the shelter one night each month.
Special thanks are reserved for Mrs. Anna Povinelli and her inspiring leadership, and for the wonderful generosity of Mrs. Cathy McEvoy and The Ruth and Hal Launders Charitable Trust for providing the
financial support that makes the club’s work possible.
Also, I know I am not alone in missing our dear friend Mr. Sidney Elmore, unofficial ambassador of Pacific House and a friend to all, who as a staff member at the shelter has shown by example how hard
work and perseverance can lead to a fulfilling and impactful life.
