Mission in Motion is the theme of this year’s Honor Roll of Donors and an apt theme it is. Dedicated support from you, ourdonors and volunteers, continues to advance the perpetual motion of philanthropy that began in 1908 with our founders,The Rev. John “Papa” Raker and his wife, Estella “Mama” Raker.
You are and always have been fundamental to strengthening our mission of service to people with disabilities. Donor support isthe fulcrum that keeps us moving forward with innovative programs, services and technologies. That takes many forms fromgifts in honor or in memory of someone special to charitable gift annuities and leadership roles in such groups as The RakerVision and our major fund raisers, including our annual Gala in the Garden and Golf and Tennis Invitational.
As you read through the Honor Roll, you’ll see ample evidence of our Mission in Motion. Dan Beers, a spinal-cord injury patientwho lost the use of his legs, is a powerful example of philanthropy in action. Thanks to a donation to the Ekso ScholarshipProgram by the Women’s Giving Circle, Dan was able to continue his therapy at a critical time when there was a coverage gapwith his insurance. In July, using the Ekso exoskeleton, a marvel of technology, Dan walked to the altar and took his weddingvows standing face-to-face with his beautiful bride, Csala.
A noteworthy event in 2013 involved movement of another kind. After 16 years as Good Shepherd’s leader, Sally Gammonretired as president and chief executive officer. Sally always talked about “advancing the cause,” a phrase coined by PapaRaker. Sally certainly did that during her tenure here. In her honor, the Sally Gammon Fund for Pediatrics was established, helping advance the cause for children. At the close of our fiscal year 2013, we are pleased to report that donor contributionsreached $148,083.
We are not only proud of our loyal family of donors, but of our wonderful development staff too. They keep the mission movingby relationship-building in ways large and small. When we tally up the numbers this year, our team logged 19,695 visits, phonecalls and other forms of communication with hundreds of donors from as far away as Florida and Canada, and as close by asAllentown. We think our founders would be happy knowing that we are carrying on their legacy of “advancing the cause.”
As we step into another year of service, we are mindful of the ongoing challenges of a constantly changing health-careenvironment and a growing need for our services. We are grateful for all you’ve done this past year to help children and adultswith disabilities, and pray you will continue to be steadfast friends as we move forward.
John Kristel, MBA, MPT David F. Lyons, CFREPresident and CEO Vice President, Development

When Ann Troxel walked into theoutpatient pediatric therapy gym andsaw the sensory swing that had beenpurchased with donations made by Annand her husband Brandon, it was pure“euphoria” she says. The swing was justone of many items therapists were able tobuy thanks to more than $7,000 donatedby the Troxels and their friends in honorof Brandon’s 40th birthday. The gifts weremade “in the spirit of paying it forward”as gratitude for the strides their two boys,(top) Caiden, 5 and Talon, 7, made thanksto the pediatric speech, occupational andfeeding therapists at Good Shepherd. Both boys have autism and individualdisorders that deeply impacted family lifeand the boys’ ability to socialize. Today, the Troxels are vacationing and doingthings together they never imagined. Both boys are thriving and lookingforward to going to school in the fall.

When Dan Beers of Slatington walkedup to the altar and his beautiful bride,Csala Peters, stood tall and looked inher eyes to exchange vows, it was anextraordinary moment in the youngcouple’s lives and an achievementmade possible through technologyand donor support. Dan, who brokehis back 11 years ago in a motorcycleaccident, walked the walk wearing theEkso bionic exoskeleton, a battery-powered robotic device at GoodShepherd’s neurorehabilitationprogram, that has been helping spinalcord injury patients or those withlower-extremity paralysis, stand andwalk. In 2012, the Women’s GivingCircle made a $43,000 giftestablishing the Ekso Scholarshipwhich helps Ekso users like Dan stayconsistent with their therapy whenthere’s a gap in medical benefitcoverage. Dawn Costello, Ph.D., has had a long-lastingrelationship with Good Shepherd through family tiesthat includes a deep, personal friendship with the lateRev. Dr. Conrad Raker, former administrator and sonof Good Shepherd’s founders. As a former patient,Dr. Costello also knows first-hand the high caliber ofnursing at Good Shepherd. So it was with a gratefulheart that Dr. Costello, retired from a career in nursingand nursing administration, helped launch the NursingScholarships Endowment in 2012. Dr. Costellovolunteers her time and shares her expertise on theendowment committee. The endowment wasestablished to provide funding for annual scholarshipsfor nursing education, leading to better patient care.It honors former head nurses Elizabeth Oberly andEvelyn Allen, who were role models for new generationsof nurses and consistently practiced the legacy ofcompassionate care demonstrated by Estella Raker,Dr. Raker’s mother.
