The Chinese Group of IABSE has always been noted for their ingenuity and enthusiasm when it comes to the arranging of IABSE conference style events. But with the May conference in Guangzhou we see yet more new ideas - principally the linking of national and international activities into a single conference. Thus both the international structural engineering community and Chinese structural engineers will be able to come together for the exchange of technical information, understanding of the context of construction projects in different societies and the all important networking and social interaction that are such an important part of any conference. For those of us who have been fortunate to have visited China the choice of Guangzhou provides the possibility of seeing parts of the country away from the usual Beijing/Shanghai area.It also provides an opportunity to see at first hand some of the major constructions that are making China such an important contributor to the international list of major infrastructure developments. I know that our hosts will provide a warm welcome, a stimulating and rewarding programme and an experience that is not to be missed. I look forward to seeing you there in the spring.

Message from the President of IABSE

Message from the OrganisersThe Conference is organised by the Chinese Group of IABSE associated with Guangzhou University, Tongji University, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge Authority , and Guangdong Provincial Chang Da Highway Engineering Co., Ltd. In this century, we have organised the IABSE Symposium 2004 and the IABSE Workshop 2009 both in Shanghai, which turned to be a great success. We are confident enough to assure this coming event in Guangzhou again a success keeping up with the times.
In today’s society the idea of sustainability is possibly more prevalent than at any other point and time, especially for infrastructures that are expected to last for long life and to serve as landmarks of the city and the country. Civil engineers and future civil engineers play a vital role in the sustainable development in meeting the needs of the society. A Civil Engineer’s utmost responsibility is sustainability and to seek its solutions. Therefore, the theme of the conference lies on “Bridges and Structures Sustainability—Seeking Intelligent Solutions”. China, the whole country, is an example, where traditional culture and modern trends co-exist in harmony to a certain degree with merits/drawbacks and with focused topics for open discussion.
Guangzhou, the host city of the conference, with 2200 years in history, is the third largest Chinese city as well as the economic and cultural centre of South China where the Asian Games 2010 were held. As a modern city, Guangzhou keeps progress with the state-of-the-art bridges and structures, including the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, the Guangzhou Tower, and many other infrastructures. Both the Bridge and the Tower will be included in the technical visits of the conference.
We are very pleased to invite you to the IABSE Conference 2016, set in new conference format -- the linking of national and international activities into a single conference, in Guangzhou, where Chinese and international scientists, practising engineers, contractors, fabricators, designers and asset owners will gather to discuss the focused conference themes. You will find new friends and meet old friends, and also have a great time in taking part in wonderful technical visits.

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, crossing the Pearl River Estuary and linking Hong Kong to the East, and Zhuhai and Macau to the West, is a combination of bridges, a tunnel and two artificial islands. With an investment of approximately 105 billion CNY, this project is about 29.6 km in total length, including 22.8 km in bridges, 6.7 km in immersed tube tunnels, and 1.25 km in artificial islands. The construction period of the project is scheduled from 2009 to 2017.

Guangzhou Tower is a 610-metre tall multi-purpose observation tower in the Haizhu District of Guangzhou (historically known as Canton or Kwangchow), Guangdong, China. The tower was topped out in 2009 and it became operational on September 29, 2010 for the 2010 Asian Games. The tower briefly held the title of tallest tower in the world, replacing the CN Tower, before being surpassed by the Tokyo Skytree. Some other tall buildings near Guangzhou Tower will also be visited, including East Tower Building, West Tower Building, and etc.
