Dr. S. Thilagar, Vice- Chancellor, TANUVAS during his visit to University of Georgia, Athens, USA from 28.06.2015 to 07.07.2015. He held discussions with Dr. Sheila W. Allen, Dean and Dr. Karen Cornell, Associate Dean, Academic affairs, CVM, UGA regarding the student exchange programme on 30.06.2015 and it was agreed to organize clinical externship programme of six weeks duration for the students of TANUVAS at CVM, UGA and vice-versa from the summer of 2016. Both the institutions have agreed for faculty exchange in specific areas. Dr. S. Thilagar, Vice-Chancellor held discussions with Dr. Pamela Whitten, Provost, University of Georgia and Dr. Frederick D. Quinn, Department Head, Department of Infectious Disease to explore the possibilities of jointly working in the areas of: infectious diseases and validation of diagnostic kits and candidate vaccines; Dr. Mark W. Jackwood, Department Head, Poultry Diagnostic The newly constructed buildings at VC&RI, Orathanadu, Tirunelveli; CPPM, Hosur; VUTRCs, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Rajapalayam, Trichy and FTC, Theni were declared open by the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu through Video conferencing on 15.07.2015. The new buildings were constructed with a total cost of Rs. 129.91 Crores.

TANUVAS INITIATES INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH INTIATIVES

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was agreed upon between TANUVAS and College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Georgia (CVM, UGA) for a six week clinical externship

student exchange programme and faculty exchange programme in specific areas. Dr. S. Thilagar, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS during his visit to University of Georgia, Athens, USA from 28.06.2015 to 07.07.2015. He held discussions with Dr. Sheila W. Allen, Dean and Dr. Karen Cornell, Associate Dean, Academic affairs, CVM, UGA regarding the student exchange programme on 30.06.2015 and it was agreed to organize clinical externship programme of six weeks duration for the students of TANUVAS at CVM, UGA and vice-versa from the summer of 2016. The new buildings were constructed with a total cost of Rs. 129.91 Crores.

& Research Centre to share research interests in poultry and extramural research grants; Dr. Steven Stice, Director, Regenerative Bioscience Center to strengthen the Centre for Stem Cell Research and Regenerative Medicine, TANUVAS; Dr. Jim Moore, Co-Director, Education Resource Centre for collaborating in developing e-books on specific topics in Veterinary Medicine and Dr. Steven D. Holladay, Department Head, Department of Veterinary Biosciences & Diagnostic Imaging in establishing a MRI and CT Scan facility at TANUVAS and training of the faculty of TANUVAS in diagnostic imaging. The Vice-Chancellor held discussions with Thiru. P.I. Joy, CEO, M/s Think Development Systems, Inc., Atlanta and Thiru. Krishnan Sarathy, President, Eco-Smart India Pvt. Ltd., businessmen of Indian origin for validating organic pesticides and parasiticides. Dr. Sunil George, Wake Forest Institute for

Regenerative Medicine, North Carolina met the Vice-chancellor and held discussions to strengthen the existing ties for bringing out productive outputs at the Centre for Stem Cell Research and Regenerative Medicine, TANUVAS. On request by Dr. Hansel Fletcher, Assistant Dean, Dr. S. Thilagar, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS visited Loma Linda University (LLU) on 07.07.2015 and 08.07.2015 and held discussions with Dr. Penelope Duerksen Hughes, Associate Dean, School of Medicine, LLU to strengthen the existing ties in the areas of bioinformatics, biotechnology and stem cell research. The Vice-Chancellor visited the BSL 3 laboratory for the diagnosis of infectious diseases and the laboratories and core facilities of the Stem Cell Consortium and held discussions with Dr. Prue Talbot, Director, Stem Cell Core Facility, University California and Dr. Iva Afrikanova, Stem Cell Coordinator and Academic Director and Dr. Mary Kearns Jonkers and Dr. Ubaldo Soto prominent

scientists of Stem Cell Consortium. TANUVAS alumni, Dr. P.S. Mohankumar, Professor and Dr. Sheba Mohankumar, Associate Professor, CVM, UGA and Dr. Wilson Aruni, Assistant Research Professor, LLU made necessary arrangements at their respective institutes.

VICE-CHANCELLOR’S VISIT TO UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM, UNITED KINGDOM

Dr. S. Thilagar, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS visited the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science(SVMS), University of Nottingham, United Kingdom under the BBSRC-India partnering award programme titled “Collaboration on diagnosis of emerging viruses” from 27.07.2015 to 29.07.2015. During the visit, the Vice-Chancellor attended the

conference on ‘Emerging viruses 2015’ held at SVMS and delivered a talk on ‘Anglo-Indian Partnerships’, elaborating on the completed and ongoing collaborative projects between TANUVAS and the UK partners. The Vice-Chancellor held discussions with Professor Gary England, Foundation Dean, SVMS, University of Nottingham regarding future collaborations between the two institutes. Dr. K. Kumanan, Dean, Faculty of Basic Sciences, TANUVAS; Dr.Janet Daly, SVMS and Dr. Suresh Verma Kuchipudi, Collaborating scientists of the BBSRC programme were also present during the discussions.

NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON FOOD AND GLOBAL WARMING

The College of Food and Dairy Technology, Koduvalli organized a two day National Workshop on “Food and Global Warming” on 31.07.2015 and 01.08.2015. Dr. S. Thilagar, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS presided over the function and delivered the presidential address. Dr. R. Anandakumar, I.A.S., Executive Director, Tamil Nadu Watershed Development Agency, Chennai delivered the special address and released the compendium. Dr. C. Balachandran, Dean, MVC, felicitated. A total of 422 delegates including 17 lead speakers from Gujarat, Telengana, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu participated. In the valedictory function held on 01.08.2015, Dr. T.J. Harikrishnan, Registrar, TANUVAS presided and delivered the presidential address. Dr. S.R. Ramanan, Advisor, Director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre, IMD, RMD delivered the valedictory address. Earlier, Dr. T. Sivakumar, Chairman, Organizing Committee and Dean, CFDT, Koduvalli welcomed the gathering. Dr. D. Ramasamy, Organizing Secretary & Professor and Head, Department of Food Science and Technology, CFDT, Koduvalli presented the report. Dr. B. Murugan, Professor, Department of Food and Industrial Microbiology, CFDT, Koduvalli proposed the vote of thanks.

7th TECHNOLOGY RELEASE COMMITTEE MEETING

The Seventh Technology Release Committee Meeting was convened under the Chairmanship of Dr. S. Thilagar, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS on 21.07.2015

at MVC. The Member Secretary and Director of Research; Director of Extension Education; Director, Centre for Animal Production Studies; Director, Centre for Animal Health Studies; Deans of Madras Veterinary College; Faculty of Basic Sciences, MVC; Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal, Orathanadu; College of Poultry Production and Management, Hosur and College of Food and Dairy Technology, Koduvalli also participated in this meeting as members of the Technology Release Committee. During this meeting, 24 technologies which were placed in the earlier Technology Release Committee Meeting were revisited and two new proposals were also placed. Three technologies were approved as such. For 15 technologies suitable directions were issued to improve the technologies.

REVIEW MEETING OF POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH WORK

A review meeting to screen the programme of research works proposed by the M.V.Sc., and Ph.D., students of 2014-15 batch was conducted at MVC from 22.06.2015 to 24.06.2015 and VC&RI, Namakkal on 17.07.2015. The review committee headed by Dr. S. Thilagar, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS along with Dean, Faculty of Basic Sciences; concerned Deans of Colleges; Dean, VC&RI, Tirunelveli; Director of Research, Director of CAPS, Director of CAHS, Director of Extension Education, TANUVAS reviewed 87 M.V.Sc. students and 19 Ph.D scholars at MVC and 31 M.V.Sc. students and 8 Ph.D. scholars at VC&RI, Namakkal and suggested necessary corrections, incorporations and modifications.

and student amenities at VC&RI, Orathanadu from 07.07.2015 to 09.07.2015. Dr. K.N. Selvakumar, Dean, VC&RI, Orathanadu explained the activities. Dr. T.J. Harikrishnan, Registrar, TANUVAS accompanied the team.

VC&RI, TIRUNELVELI

A team of experts nominated by the Veterinary Council of India inspected various infrastructure facilities available at VC&RI from 08.07.2015 to 10.07.2015. The team comprised of Dr. G.S. Manohar, Professor, Department of Veterinary Parasitology, College of Veterinary and Animal Science, Bikaner, Rajasthan, Dr. H.A. Upendra, Director, Institute of Wildlife Veterinary Research and Coordinator M.V.Sc, Wildlife, Veterinary College, Hebbal, Bangalore, Karnataka and Dr. A.H. Ahmad, Professor, Department of Pharmacology, College of Veterinary Science, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand. The expert team interacted with Dr. S. Prathaban, Dean, VC&RI, Tirunelveli and staff members.

VISIT OF ANIMAL HUSBANDRY SECRETARY

Dr. S. Vijayakumar, I.A.S., Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Government of Tamil Nadu reviewed the scheme on “Establishment of fodder production units in Meikkal Poromboke land in Vellore district” implemented by TANUVAS at Kilveedhi village, Arakkonam Taluk, Vellore district on 23.07.2015. Dr. S. Saraswathi, Assistant Professor and Head, VUTRC, Vellore explained about the developments of the

scheme. Thiru. T. Abraham, I.A.S., Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Chennai, Dr. K. Rajasekaran, RJD(AH), Vellore and Dr. S. Rajendran, Deputy Director, CBPD were present.

VICE-CHANCELLOR PARTICIPATES

The Annual Meeting of AICRP on Agroforestry was held at Sher– E-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology – Kashmir, Srinagar from 25.07.2015 to 27.07.2015. Dr. S. Thilagar, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS participated as guest of honour and released a hand book on “Agroforestry models in Tamil Nadu for livestock integration”. Dr. C. Valli, Professor and Head, IAN,Kattupakkam presented the report about work done at AICRP on Agroforestry at Kattupakkam during 2014-2015 and plan of work proposed for 2015-16.

CLINICAL INTERNSHIP TRAINING PROGRAMME

TANUVAS organized the clinical internship training programme for 68 students from Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU), Bangladesh from 13.06.2015 to 11.07.2015. The valedictory function was held on 10.07.2015. Dr. T.J. Harikrishnan, Registrar, TANUVAS delivered presidential address and distributed the certificates to the students. Dr. C. Balachandran, Dean, MVC, Dr. T.N. Ganesh, Director of Clinics i/c, TANUVAS and Dr. Md. Ahasanul Hoque, Dean, CVASU participated. Dr. P.S. Thirunavukkarasu, Programme Co-ordinator and Professor and Head, Department of Clinics, MVC offered vote of thanks.

TRAINING ON BLUETONGUE VACCINE TECHNOLOGY

The Vaccine Research Centre – Viral Vaccines, CAHS, TANUVAS organized a training programme on “Bluetongue virus propagation and vaccine production” for Dr. Swapnil R. Bangar and Thiru. Ch. Samesh Kumar, Scientists from M/s Sanvita Biotechnologies Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad from 15.07.2015 to 30.07.2015. M/s Sanvita

Biotechnologies Pvt. Ltd. has paid an amount of Rs.10.00 lakhs as per the MoU between M/s Sanvita Biotechnologies Pvt. Ltd., ICAR and TANUVAS for the transfer of technology of Bluetongue Multivalent Inactivated Vaccine developed at TANUVAS through ICAR funded All India Network Programme on Bluetongue for commercial production.

VISIT OF TEAM FROM SEPPIC COMPANY

Mr. Marc Gillin, Director, Asia Pacific and Mr. Ashok Bhat, Country Manager, South Asia & Asia Business Manager, Pharma&Nutrition, Seppic Company visited Vaccine Research Centre–Viral Vaccines, CAHS, TANUVAS on 10.07.2015 for discussion on the project “Large scale field testing of inactivated multivalent adjuvanated vaccine for bluetongue”. Seppic Company, France and Yasham Speciality Ingredients Pvt Ltd., (Indian Distributor of Seppic), Mumbai have been providing funding and technical expertise for the development of more potent and affordable bluetongue vaccine.

TRAINING ON APPLICATION OF BIOINFORMATICS IN VETERINARY RESEARCH

The Bioinformatics Centre & ARIS Cell, MVC organized a training programme on “Application of Bioinformatics in Veterinary Research” to increase the awareness of application of in-silico research works in animal and veterinary sciences from 06.07.2015 to 10.07.2015. A total of 21 scientists from all over India participated. The valedictory function was held on 10.07.2015. Dr. C. Balachandran, Dean, MVC awarded certificates to the participants and delivered the valedictory address.

PERSONALITY AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME FOR STUDENTS

VC&RI, Tirunelveli organized a two day personality and skill development programme for the students of first B.V.Sc. & A.H. on 18.07.2015 and 19.07.2015. Topics on presentation skills, effective team work, team decision making / problem

solving, emotional intelligence / problem solving and decision making were covered. Tmt. Radha, Head, Content Services, Smart Series, Bangalore conducted the programme. Dr. S. Thilagar, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS presided in the valedictory function held on 19.07.2015 and in his presidential address stressed on the importance of personality development in life and career of individuals. Dr. S. Prathaban, Dean, VC&RI, Tirunelveli felicitated. A total of 49 students from VC&RI, Namakkal and VC&RI, Tirunelveli participated

ZOONOSES DAY CELEBRATED

MVC: The Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology, MVC in association with N.S.S. Unit celebrated the zoonoses day at Thanneerkulam Village near Thiruvallur on 05.07.2015. A free anti-rabies immunization of community owned as well as pet dogs was conducted and a total of 29 dogs were vaccinated against rabies and 139 animals were dewormed. Pamphlets on zoonotic diseases, rabies, leptospirosis, hydatidosis, toxocariasis and toxoplasmosis in Tamil and English were distributed to the public. Dr. M. Sekar, Professor and Head and Dr. N. Kumaravelu, Programme Officer, NSS organized the programme.

VC&RI, NAMAKKAL: VC&RI, Namakkal organized an awareness rally from Veterinary College hospital campus to Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Namakkal South through the

Paramathi road, Fort road, Clock tower junction on 06.07.2015. Thiru. V. Thatchinamoorthy, I.A.S., District Collector, Namakkal flagged off the rally. Faculty and students carried banners and placards displaying the ways and means to prevent zoonotic diseases. Leaflets on leptospirosis, toxocariasis, hydatidosis, toxoplasmosis and rabies were distributed to the public and school students. Dr. L. Gunaseelan, Dean, VC&RI, Namakkal delivered a lecture on “Zoonotic diseases” at Government

CANINE IMMUNIZATION UNIT INAUGURATED

An exclusive Canine Immunization Unit has been added to Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex, VC&RI, Namakkal. Dr. S. Thilagar, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS inaugurated the unit on 18.07.2015. Dr. L. Gunaseelan, Dean, VC&RI, Namakkal, Dr. P.I. Ganesan, Director, DCAHS, Dr. S. Balasubramanian, Director of Research, TANUVAS and the staff of VC&RI, Namakkal participated. The unit will be operated by the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine.

INAUGURATION OF NEW FACILITIES

The newly constructed office and undergraduate laboratory buildings of Instructional Livestock Farm Complex, VC&RI, Namakkal were declared open by Dr. S. Thilagar, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS on 17.07.2015. Dr. L. Gunaseelan, Dean, VC&RI, Namakkal, Dr. S. Prathaban, Dean, VC&RI, Tirunelveli, Dr. M. Babu, Director, Centre for Animal Production Studies, Dr. P.I. Ganesan, Director, Centre for Animal Health Studies, Dr. S. Balasubramanian, Director of Research, TANUVAS, Dr. P. Sakthivelu, Regional Joint Director of Animal Husbandry, Namakkal were present.

AGRI-INTEX 2015 EXHIBITION

VUTRC, Coimbatore in coordination with KVK, Namakkal, UPD, TANUVAS and VUTRCs, Erode

and Tiruppur participated in the Agri-Intex 2015 International Exhibition on behalf of TANUVAS held at Codissia Hall, Coimbatore from 17.07.2015 to 20.07.2015. Dr. S. Thilagar, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS participated in the inaugural function held on 17.07.2015, offered felicitations and visited the stalls. Charts and photographs highlighting the activities and achievements of our University, books, TANUVAS mineral mixture, DVDs, salt blocks and seeds were displayed. During the exhibition, the enquiries of the farmers were clarified by the technical staff in person. Pamphlets on various livestock farming were distributed. In addition, TANUVAS mineral mixture, salt blocks, fodder seeds, DVDs and University publications were sold to the needy farmers. More than 1.25 Lakh farmers visited the exhibition stall. University Publication Division took active participation at the Agri-Intex 2015 at Coimbatore. A sale mela was organised for all university publication such as books and kalnadaikathir apart from free distribution of pamphlets on as AH activities. There was good response to university publications and the sale reached around Rs. 30,000/-. The spot enrollment for Kalnadai Kathir was worth Rs. 40,000/-.

KVK, KATTUPAKKAM: A seminar cum exhibition entitled “Recent technologies in agriculture and livestock to augment food production” was organized at KVK, Kattupakkam on 02.07.2015 and 03.07.2015

in connection with the Pre-Kharif Awareness programme sponsored by ICAR, New Delhi. Tmt. K. Maragatham Kumaravel, Hon’ble MP, Kancheepuram participated in the inaugural function held on 02.07.2015 distributed critical inputs, conferred awards on successful KVK farmers and addressed the farmers. Dr. D. Thyagarajan, Director of Extension Education, TANUVAS released the technological pamphlets and a book entitled “Newer technologies in agriculture and livestock”. An exhibition with stalls showcasing newer technologies in Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, horticulture, livestock, poultry, fisheries and value addition in the form of charts, models and live specimens were put up by KVK, Kattupakkam, PGRIAS, CFTU, IAN, Department of Agriculture, Horticulture, AGMARK, pharmaceutical companies and agricultural/ livestock equipment dealers. A total of 216 registered farmers participated in the seminar and benefitted.

KVK, KUNDRAKUDI: An Awareness Workshop cum Exhibition for Pre-Kharif season was conducted by KVK, Kundrakudi on 16.07.2015. Dr. D. Thyagarajan, Director of Extension Education, TANUVAS inaugurated the exhibition stalls, delivered the presidential address and distributed critical inputs to the farmers. Thiru. R. Gurumurthy, JD(Agri.), Sivagangai district and Dr. R. Vishwanathan, RJD(AH), Sivagangai district participated. A total of 425 farmers were participated and benefitted.

MANAGEMENT OF ANIMALS DURING TSUNAMIS AND FLOODS

The first south zone Veterinary Emergency Response Unit (VERU) training programme was jointly organized by VERU, MVC and World Animal Protection at MVC from 17.07.2015 to 20.07.2015. The VERU staff and 130 final year B.V.Sc & AH students of MVC were trained on the VERU 16 Modules. As a part of this training, a simulation exercise on management of animals during tsunamis and floods was organised at Nettukuppam Village of Thiruvallur district on 26.07.2015. In the Valedictory function, Dr. S.

Thilagar, Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS delivered the valedictory address and distributed the certificates to the participants. Dr. T.J. Harikrishnan, Registrar, TANUVAS, Dr. C. Balachandran, Dean, MVC and Dr. K. Kumanan, Dean, Faculty of Basic sciences felicitated. Dr. P. Mathialagan, Coordinator, VERU and Professor and Head, Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, MVC co-ordinated the programmes.

TNSLURB SPONSORED FARMERS SEMINAR

VUTRC, Krishnagiri conducted TNSLURB Scheme – Farmers Seminar on “Soil- Fodder – Livestock Interface to Augment Productivity” sponsored by Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission on 24.07.2015. Dr. P. Balachandran, Associate Professor and Head, VUTRC, Krishnagiri welcomed the gathering. Dr.N. Devarajan, RJD(AH), Krishnagiri participated as chief guest and delivered special address on the fodder schemes available in the government. Dr. A. Anitha, Assistant Professor, VUTRC, Krishnagiri explained about the activities of VUTRC and proposed the vote of thanks. A total of 51 farmers from different areas of Krishnagiri District attended the seminar.

VUTRC, Rajapalayam also organized the similar TNSLURB programme on 23.07.2015. Thiru. M.S. Shenbagaraj, JD (Agri) i/c and Dr. R. Sugumar, JD(AH) participated and explained about various government schemes implemented in Virudhunagar district for the benefit of farming community. A total of 50 farmers participated and benefitted.

Further, Thiru. K. Vivekanandhan, I.A.S., District Collector, Dharmapuri inaugurated the

seminar and released a booklet on “Fodder cultivation and soil fertility” and distributed inputs like fodder seeds of COFS29 and desmanthus to the participants in the similar programme held on 23.07.2015 at VUTRC, Dharmapuri. A total of 50 farmers participated.

INPUTS DISTRIBUTED

The Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, VC&RI, Namakkal organized capacity building programme on “Scientific Dairy Farming Technologies” for the beneficiaries of DST sponsored scheme entitled “Sustaining the Livelihood of Rural Weaker Sections through Innovative Scientific Dairy Farming Technologies of Vellore and Cuddalore District in Tamil Nadu” at Elangiyanur village of Nallur taluk, Cuddalore District on 02.07.2015 and 03.07.2015. In the valedictory function, concentrate feed, Hedge Lucerne seed, TANUVAS SMART mineral mixture and TANUVAS GRAND supplement, training manual and leaflets on dairy farming were distributed to the beneficiaries.

TRAINING

� FTC, Kancheepuram conducted a one day training and awareness programme on “Causes of infertility and its management in Bovines” for 25 beneficiaries of Kancheepuram district under TANUVAS Research Corpus Fund (TRCF) scheme on 14.07.2015. The Centre also conducted a one day training programme on Scientific Goat farming practices for 30 beneficiaries of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts on 17.07.2015.

� VUTRC, Karur organized a self-employment training programme on “Desi bird farming” for six days funded by Rural Self-Employment Training Institute of Indian Overseas Bank, Karur from 14.07.2015 to 20.07.2015. A total of 25 women belonged to women headed families selected by Magalir Thittam, Karur participated.

TRAINING FOR PUDHU VAAZHVU PROJECT BENEFICIARIES

The Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, VC&RI, Tirunelveli organised a total of 3 training programmes for the

caretaker of mentally retarded beneficiaries of the Pudhu Vaazhvu Project, Tirunelveli District from 20.07.2015 to 23.07.2015. A total of 77 beneficiaries attended the training.
