Introduction

Note to Teachers, Parents and Carers

These activities are not meant to judge anybody but have been developed as starting points to support you in talking with your child about tobacco. Together you can seek out answers and facts by using a range of easy to use scenarios and activities. Whether you are a smoker or not, it is estimated that most adults who smoke now wish they had never started and would love to quit!

Most parents would prefer that their child didn’t start to smoke in the first place. In households where parents don’t smoke children are less likely to start smoking.

When your child is registered onto www.lookoutzone.co.uk through school, they will be given their own password. This will enable them to use Lookout! Tobacco with you at home. Here you will find lots of information and interactive activities which have been designed to help children make informed choices about tobacco. Remind your child to write their password in the box provided on the front cover, so they don’t forget!

When you log onto www.lookouttobacco.co.uk go into the kids section and you will come to this screen:

Activity 1: Attitudes and Values

Note to Parents and Carers

We’ve all got our own opinions - after all it would be a very boring world if we all thought the same, wouldn’t it? Whatever upsets or annoys one person doesn’t automatically have the same effect on someone else. How do our actions affect others? Is there always a right or wrong way of responding in different situations?

Respect for each other makes life easier and helps everybody get on together. Honesty is always a good starting point when you have quality time to spend with your child and helps to develop trust, which is a strong basis for future communications.

When you are reading the following scenarios remind your child that it is really easy to judge others and sometimes we do, without knowing all the facts! Choose one of the following scenarios and read through it together. Think about each situation and the different characters. Discuss the various attitudes and values of each character and think about what you would do in this situation. Don’t forget to listen to your child’s opinion as well as being as honest as you can when they ask you for yours.

Activity 1: Attitudes and Values

Scenario 1

Grandad started smoking when he was 13. He understands it is harmful to himself and his family but has struggled to quit the habit. Whenever he visits his daughter and her family, he always goes outside when he wants a cigarette, whatever the weather!

Mum is concerned because he has a bad chest and she worries that standing outside will make it worse.

Grandad started smoking when he was 13; that was a long time ago. Do you think people knew it was bad for their health?

How have things changed from when grandad was young?

Look up some historical facts in the library on the website.

Scenario 2

Dad has always smoked since he was young. But now dad has lost his job and mum works part time. Dad wants to save money to help towards the family’s living costs.

Dad realises that if he gives up smoking that would help. The family are finding it difficult though as dad is struggling and quite often bad tempered.

What do you think are the benefits of dad giving up smoking?

Why do you think dad is struggling to give up smoking?

Look at the different help sections and discuss what advice you would give someone who was trying to stop smoking. Look in the library, the school or the community centre.

Discuss how the family can help and support dad and each other. What would you do?

Scenario 3

The house was thrown in turmoil when mum got a letter saying that gran was coming to stay. Nothing ever pleased gran! The children were too noisy! The house too untidy and nobody did enough to help her!

She hadn’t been there long when she realised she had run out of cigarettes. She told Damien to go and get her some from the shop. Damien was only 13, so he told gran he couldn’t as he was too young to be served. Gran sighed and Damien felt quite sorry for her. He knew she was an old softie underneath all her huffing and puffing.

Just then dad walked in and told gran he would pop out and pick some up for her!

Activity 3 - Effects of Tobacco on the Body– Quit for a Healthier Body

Note to Parents and Carers

When tobacco was first introduced into Europe, most people believed it would cure many health problems! Nobody realised just how dangerous it was or indeed how difficult it would be to quit!

Today we know different. However for many people who know how tobacco affects their health, it doesn’t mean it is any easier to give up even though they may really want to, and the benefits can be felt after only 20 minutes.

Did you know that after stopping smoking for:

• 20 minutes - blood pressure and pulse return to normal• 8 hours – nicotine and carbon monoxide levels in the body are halved. The lungs

will have started to clear out the tar that has been clogging them up. Taste and smell are greatly improved

• 72 hours – breathing becomes easier and energy levels increase• 2-12 weeks – circulation improves and exercise is easier• 3-9 months – coughs, wheezing and breathing problems improve

Note to Parents and Carers

If you are a smoker yourselves you will know only too well the cost of smoking and the harm it can do to your pocket. Raising the tax on tobacco products is an effective way for the government to raise money and is also an incentive to some smokers to quit the habit. They’d rather see the extra cash in their own pockets and who can blame them!

You will find three activity sheets to follow. Choose either the activity sheet or the scenario sheet to discuss with your child. In each scenario, one or more members of the family are saving up. Ask your child to work out the costs and savings, don’t forget to use a calculator if your child struggles with Maths.

Activity 4 - Costs of Smoking

Scenario 1

Ben lives with his older brother, his mum and gran in a flat in a busy town. There is nowhere for him to play and he is stuck inside most of the time because mum says the area simply isn’t safe. He is fed up of watching TV and would love a PS3.

Mum, gran and his brother are all smokers. Gran has tried to quit a few times but finds it difficult to stick at it when the others smoke in front of her. She really wants to help Ben though and would love to get him a PS3 for Christmas.

One evening when Ben has gone to bed gran decides to talk to mum and Ben’s brother. She tells them she wants to save up to buy Ben a PS3 for Christmas but wants it to be a surprise. She has decided that the only way she can afford it is to stop smoking and asks them if they will help her quit. They talk about how they can do this.

• Gran smokes 20 cigarettes every day.• It costs gran £5.50 for a packet of 20.• It is eight weeks till Christmas.

Scenario 2

Mr & Mrs Smith live with their two children aged 7 and 10 and a pet dog Bruce.Mr Smith smokes 40 cigarettes every day and has done for the last 15 years.

He decides to work out how much he spends on cigarettes and asks his children to help him. Use a calculator to help dad and the children work out the costs.

Note to Parents and Carers

As a parent we all want to protect our children and keep them safe at all times. However we recognise that is an impossible task. We can’t be there all the time so how can we help prepare them when they come up against difficult situations.

A good way of preparing the way is to practise simple ways of saying ‘no’ together.

Talk about body language and simple tricks which will help avoid trouble. If in doubt don’t make eye contact but move away. If the person is someone your child sees as a friend explain that they can simply say ‘no’ or ‘no thanks’ and either change the subject or walk away.

Look in the School and click on the friends to find out about a technique called the broken record.

Think about t he f ollowing examples and t alk together with your child about possible reactions. What could they say? What would you do in their position? Remind them to be confident, say no thanks or even change the subject and walk away.

Note to Parents and Carers

You only have to open a newspaper or a magazine and you will usually find a problem page. They can be interesting to read and if you have a look in the library you will find some good examples to share with your child.

It’s always so much easier to talk about other people’s problems as there is less chance of any party being judgemental or feeling uncomfortable as it means the discussion isn’t personal. On Activity sheet 6 you will find 4 further problems which you can read together and decide how you would respond and what advice you would give.

Activity 6 - Problem Solving

Dear ....

My son starts secondary school in September. I know this

is really an exciting time for him but to be honest I’m

getting quite nervous. I’m just not sure how to prepare

him. I know he’ll be making lots of new friends which is

great and what I want, but, what if he feels left out and

goes along and does things he doesn’t really want to do,

just to be accepted. I really don’t want him to start

smoking, but that’s how I started myself and now I can’t

quit. I really don’t want him to start such a habit that is

hard to break.

How can I talk to him?

I share a bedroom with my older sister. We usually

get on really well and have a laugh together. Just

lately I have noticed a strange smell on her clothing

and I realised she has started smoking!

Yesterday I saw her go into mum’s purse and take

some money. She doesn’t know I saw her but now I

don’t know what to do. I saw her later coming out

of the local shop, she quickly shoved a packet of

cigarettes in her pocket when she spotted me.

She’s only 15, surely she shouldn’t be able to buy

cigarettes herself.

I don’t know what to do! Mum will be so mad.

What should I do?

I am worried about my gran. I loveher to bits, she is good fun and I love going to stay at her house. Last night I overheard mum talking to uncle Ivor on the phone. She told him she was worried about gran smoking and the affect it has on her breathing. Gran won’t go the doctors and talk about her problems. How can I help her? I don’t want her to get really ill but I have noticed myself that she is struggling to walk even the short distance to the shops!

Dear ...Yesterday I went to see grandad, we always watch the match together on a Saturday. I hadn’t realised he had fallen asleep until I turned round when I smelt something burning!

Grandad had dropped his lit cigarette while he dozed and it had fallen in the bin.The paper had started to smoulder a little. I quickly shook grandad awake and he soon put the fire out.He told me not to say anything to mum and dad but I’m worried.What if it happens again? What if I’m not there?What should I do?
