ORIGIN OF HOMEOPATHY

Page 6: Homeopathy medicine

PRINCIPLES

1. Similarity

2. Individualization of treatment for the patient

3. Use of the minimum dose

Page 7: Homeopathy medicine

1. SIMILARITY•Fundamental idea of homeopathy is the

‘Similarity’ stated by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann (1755–1843) in 1796.

•This implies that substances capable of causing disorder in healthy subjects are used as medicines to treat similar patterns of disorder experienced by ill people.

•He viewed health as a dynamic process.•Aimed to direct and stimulate the body’s

self-regulatory mechanisms.

Page 8: Homeopathy medicine

2. Individualization of treatment for the patient

• Characteristics of the chosen medicine should be as similar as possible to the characteristics of the illness in the patient.

• This closest match is called the ‘simillimum’. • Similarity may be at the ‘whole person’ level,

taking into account the symptoms and signs of the disease, the patient’s physical build, personality, temperament and genetic predispositions.

• This high level of individualization is not always required: ‘similarity’ may be at a more specific, local level, especially in the treatment of acute conditions.

Page 9: Homeopathy medicine

3. Use of the minimum dose

•Doses used in homeopathy range from those that are similar in concentration to some conventional medicines.

•Vigorous shaking of the solution together with impact or ‘elastic collision’ (known as succussion) during the manufacturing process is a key element in the production of homeopathic medicines.

Page 24: Homeopathy medicine

1. Plant kingdom•60% of the homeopathic medicines are

prepared from one or more parts of plants.•Leaves, roots, flowers, seeds, and berries, may

be used in the preparation of the medicines.•All types of plant, benign, poisonous, and

carnivorous, have been used as homeopathic medicines.

Page 25: Homeopathy medicine

2. Mineral kingdom•Approximately 20% of the homeopathic

medicines are prepared from minerals.•Therapeutic properties of almost all known

metals and non-metals and many important compounds have been exploited in homeopathy.

•Eg. Aurum metallicum (gold), Kali carbonicum (potassium), Natrum muriaticum (common salt), and Silica (sand)

Page 26: Homeopathy medicine

3. Animal kingdom•Some homeopathic medicines are derived from

certain animal products.•Animal products, such as snake poison, spider

poison, etc., are used in extremely minute doses to prepare homeopathic medicines.

Page 27: Homeopathy medicine

4. Diseased tissues•Some homeopathic medicines are prepared

using tissues or secretions containing bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms.

•Thus, homeopathy advocated the therapeutic use of miniscule amounts of microorganisms long before the introduction of vaccines.

Page 28: Homeopathy medicine

5.Hormones and healthy tissues•Healthy human/animal tissues and secretions

are also used to prepare homeopathic medicines.

•Examples of such medicines are Thyroidinum and Adrenaline.

6. Imponderables•Certain energy sources, such as magnetism, x-

ray, radiation, etc., are also used to prepare homeopathic medicines.
