It’s no secret – life can be stressful. While weekend getaways offer
bits of relaxation, a home’s design has significant effects on the
body and mind. In efforts to create a more serene living space,
we’ve compiled a few tips that make can a big difference in your
overall well-being.
1. Incorporate soft lighting
Proper lighting marks the easiest and most cost effective way to
improve the feel of any home space. If you’re looking to create a
calm ambiance, then work in soft, warm light to promote relaxation
versus harsh, direct light that can be over-stimulating especially
during evening hours.
“Use a dimmer. If your lamps don’t have a three-way switch built-
in, which requires a three-way bulb to function, then buy a dimmer
at your local hardware store. It’s an easy install and will only set
you back $15-20,” advises Jennifer Jones, Principal Designer of
Niche Interiors.

2. CHOOSE CALMING COLORS
Another easy update revolves around the right hues. Know which
colors cast what mood. Jacques Saint Dizier of Saint Dizier of
Design calls on blues, greens and whites for soothing spaces.
For example, blue evokes serenity, while green offers up peace
and balance.
“Combining shadow tones of similar colors are far more calming
than putting complimentary colors together. In addition the
absence of color can be soothing and give the eyes a place to
settle that is not trying to grab visual attention,” says Dizier.
3. BLUR THE INDOORS AND OUTDOORS
Once you’ve curated your lighting and color, it’s time to connect
with the outdoors. Bay Area homes graced with sweeping views
or direct access to lush backyards can easily create a mellow
environment.
“In most homes we try to dissipate the line between indoor and
outdoors. In most cases large accordion doors are used to bring
the light in and also make an easy flow from the inside to the
outside,” says Sandeep Sood, Principal of Renovation & Design,
Inc. “This allows for the garden or the view to incorporate the
interior of the home.”
For those unable to access the outdoors, weave in motion and
soothing sounds with a water feature, or up-light indoor plants
to cast shadows across walls or along doorway coverings.
This cross between visual beauty and sensory appeal equally
contributes to tranquil spaces.
“An open window or door or even a carefully directed air-
conditioning diffuser can add subtle movement which is enough
to bring even the most stubborn blood pressure down a notch or
two,” says Dizier.
4. CREATE A ZEN SPACE
Mid-peninsula homes working with an abundance of space can go
well beyond colors and lighting and dedicate a room specifically
to relaxation. These hubs of rejuvenation can house everything
from custom-built saunas and aromatherapy showers to Jacuzzi
tubs overlooking blooming gardens.
“In bigger size homes we are also making spa and meditation
rooms. As more and more professionals lead stressful lives. It is
important to not only take care of your body, but also your mind
and soul. I have used wallpaper in these rooms that are made
with natural fibers that bring a soothing feel to the space,” says
Sood.
