TOMATO VARIETIES

Cherokee Purple Tomato

80 days - This large dark purple heirloom tomato from Tennessee is rumored to have come from Cherokee gardeners, pre-1890. With its rich, full flavor, it's often compared with Brandywine. The flesh is brick-red and very attractive sliced on a plate. Plants produce large vines that yield tomatoes fully 5" across and 3 1/2" deep.

Rutgers Tomato

60-100 days. Determinate. Good for canning, also excellent fresh; large red 8-oz globes. Good yields and flavor, large vines. A fine New Jersey heirloom.

Brandywine Tomato

80 days - Brandywine, which dates back to 1885, is the heirloom tomato standard. The large, beefsteak-shaped fruits grow on unusually upright, potato-leaved plants. The fruits set one or two per cluster and ripen late-and are worth the wait. Brandywine's qualities really shine when it develops an incredible fine, sweet flavor. Up to 1 ½ lbs each!

Principe Borghese Tomato70-75 days, Determinate. The Italian heirloom that is famous for sun drying. Small 1-to 2-oz, grape-shaped fruit is very dry and has few seeds. It has a rich tomato taste that is wonderful for sauces. Vines yield clusters of fruit in abundance, perfect for selling in fresh markets and making specialty products.

Emerald Evergreen Tomato72 days, indeterminate. Mild, delicious flavor and medium to large size make these solid beefsteak fruit good for slicing and very enjoyable to eat.

Classic Beefsteak Tomato90 days— The fruit of 'Beefsteak' are large meaty, ribbed and deep scarlet in color. Weights average about 12 oz. Fairly soft skinned for easy slicing and a great addition to sandwiches. 'Beefsteak' is a very old standard variety. From this seed was developed many larger tomatoes we know today. Although it is well-known, it continues to be popular for one reason; it is the classic slicing variety.

90 days. Winner of the 2005 “Heirloom Garden Show” best-tasting tomato award. These have won taste awards coast to coast in the last few years, so we were proud to locate a small supply of seed. The fruit is smooth, large, and beautiful, being one of the darkest and prettiest of the purple types we have seen. They seem to have an extra dose of the complex flavor that makes dark tomatoes famous.

Abe Lincoln Original Tomato80 Days, indeterminate. Released by H.W. Buckbees in 1923, this meaty variety has incredible thick flesh with a tiny seed core and great old-fashioned tomato flavor. Vines are indeterminate with medium to very large red fruit.

Pink Bumble Bee Tomato60-70 days. A stunning cherry tomato, of recent breeding from Artisan Seeds. The fruit has a bright, sweet flavor, and the color is vibrant fire-engine-red with golden orange striping. Vigorous vines yield crack resistant fruit over a very long season. Tolerates cool nighttime temps and hot days.Salad will never be the same!

Blue Beauty Tomato80 Days - They were developed with traditional selection and breeding techniques at the University of Oregon, beginning in the 1960's from crossing cultivated tomatoes and wild species from Chili and the Galapagos islands. Young fruits when exposed to sunlight have indigo-purple skin from the pigment Anthocyanin, naturally occurring in blueberries, which

is a powerful and beneficial antioxidant. The fruits are ready to harvest when the skin turns bright rosy red on the bottom, shoulders are indigo shaded and the fruit is soft to the touch. Shoulders start out sapphire blue, darkening to a deep purple-red as they ripen. Abundant amounts of 6-8 oz meaty slicing tomatoes with clusters of fruits hold very well on the vine having great crack and sunburn resistance.

Dad's Sunset Tomato

The perfect orange tomato! Large 10-oz. fruit is very smooth, uniform, and a beautiful, glowing orange in color. It keeps very well. One of the best-flavored tomatoes we have tried.

Granny Cantrell German Red TomatoThis meaty, beefsteak-type tomato is named after Lettie Cantrell, who received seeds from a soldier returning from Germany during World War II. She grew this tomato in the hills of eastern Kentucky for many years. This was her favorite tomato and the only one she grew. Each year she saved seeds from the largest tomatoes, some of which reached 2 1/2 lbs. Our growers find it to be quite productive.

Yellow Pear Tomato80 days. Very sweet, 1½-inch yellow, pear-shaped fruit has a mild flavor, and is great for fresh eating or for making tomato preserves. Very productive plants are easy to grow.

Costoluto Florentino Tomato75-80 days. A super productive and early maturing Italian sauce and slicing tomato. The deeply ruffled fruit makes the flavorful, bright red sauce that embodies Italian cuisine. Indeterminate plants are super vigorous; an all-around hardy heirloom. The unusual fruit sells itself at market. It looks so beautiful sliced on a sandwich.

Costoluto Genovese TomatoThe fluted, old Italian favorite that has been around since the early 19th century. Fruit is rather flattened and quite attractive with its deep ribbing. This variety is a standard in Italy for both fresh eating and preserving, and known for its intensely flavorful, deep red flesh. This variety has also become very popular with chefs in this country

70-80 days. Determinate. Fantastic yields of richly flavorful plum-shaped tomatoes, on compact plants that require very little staking! Resistant to early blight, reliable for home or market gardens! The paste-type fruit weighs in at 2-3 ounces, dry-fleshed and very meaty with few seeds. Great for sauces, salsas and pastes.

Roma Tomato75 days. Determinate. A quality paste variety with very thick flesh. A popular old favorite; good yields.

White Tomesol Tomato80 days. An amazing heirloom that is bursting with fragrance and natural goodness that’s hard to beat. One of the best tomatoes we have tasted, being both sweet and rich. The cream-colored fruit is beautiful, smooth and weighs about 8 ounces each. The vines set heavy yields of this rare treasure. It’s sure to become a favorite of gourmet growers.

75 days. Beautiful chartreuse with deep lime-green stripes, very attractive. Flesh is bright green and very rich tasting, sweet with a sharp bite to it (just too good to describe!). A favorite tomato of many high-class chefs, specialty markets, and home gardeners. Yield is excellent. The most striking tomato in our catalog, a real beauty. Around 3 ounces.

Pink Berkeley Tie-Dye Tomato65-75 days. Compact plants produce beautiful 8-12 ounce fruit with a very sweet, rich, dark tomato flavor. 10 out of 10 people liked the port wine colored beefsteak with metallic green stripes better than Cherokee Purple in a farmers market taste off.

Jersey Devil Tomato90 days. Pendulant, pointed, pepper-like fruit is slow to set on but yield very heavily. 5-6-inch, ruby-red, paste-type fruit is very meaty and have but few seeds. Incredible flavor.

75 days. (Also known as Steakhouse) Vigorous plants produce hundreds of small, 1-inch cherries, unfazed by heat and humidity. The flavor is very good, not exactly sweet but with an old-fashioned, full, complex flavor. Originated in the Ozarks around 1900, but also exceedingly popular in Australia—two ostensibly English- speaking regions where puns, apparently, are popular as well.

Millionaire TomatoWe are proud to introduce this legendary old timey beefsteak type from the Ozarks. Popular with Ozark homesteaders and gardeners for over 70 years, thanks to incredible flavor and fruit quality. They have a delectable, sweet flavor and are a beautiful coral-pink color

Arkansas Traveler Tomato This 100-year-old heirloom favorite hailing from the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas produces goodly numbers of rich flavorful tomatoes. PEPPER VARIETIES

Ozark Giant PepperThis variety produces huge, long bell peppers that have delicious, thick flesh. They start out green and turn bright red. Very productive plants and great flavor will make this old Ozarks variety a favorite.

Orange Bell PepperSuper sweet, brilliant orange fruit is blocky and good-sized with thick flesh that is flavorful and among the best tasting of all peppers. Plants produce large yields of this most magnificent pepper.

HERBS

Emily BasilCompact version of the classic Genovese type that is superior for pot culture, having shorter stem-length between leaf nodes. Widely recognized to be longer-lasting when cut, all of which make “Emily” a better subject for market growers and home gardeners.

Dark Purple Opal BasilA beautiful and ornamental variety; deep purple. Italian basil flavor.

Cilantro / Coriander(Coriandrum sativum) Cilantro is an herb that does double duty in the garden! The pungently flavorful leaves, called cilantro, offer complex flavor to a number of dishes, while the seeds, known as coriander, are used as a spice.

Chinese chives

(Allium tuberosum) These winter-tolerant chives are great for greenhouse production. They have great garlic flavor and are popular with Asian chefs.
