DUE TO its extensive experience in working with trusted suppliers inthe Far East, Blue Diamond Technologies, now part of TRITEC Per-formance Solutions, can offer custom parts in low minimum quanti-ties (500 pieces) without the need for high minimum orders that runinto thousands of pieces. This allows customers to source a custompart with very little risk and minimum cost.

“There are many ways we can help our customers get the best out-come from sourcing low cost custom parts. Using our services removesmany of the problems and risks associated with sourcing directly fromsuppliers in the Far East,” explains Mike Doel, business development man-

ager, Blue Diamond Technologies.“Customers often contact us be-cause they cannot find a standardproduct to do the required joband they don’t want to compro-

mise on product design or quality. Frequently, they also want to buy lowquantities to test the market before daring to commit to the higher vol-umes often demanded by large overseas manufacturing organisations.”

Blue Diamond assists with design for manufacture and has the know-ledge and engineering resources to evaluate components and suggestmodifications that will make the parts easier (ie more cost effective) tomanufacture. Once any modifications are approved, Blue Diamond maywell be able to supply parts at a lower price, within a shorter lead time, orin a smaller batch quantity, or some combination of these.

When there is a problem with a part — for example durability, fit, func-tion etc — Blue Diamond will work with the customer to understand asmuch as possible about the issue and assess any possible design alter-natives. Prototypes can be produced for evaluation and once approvedcan be taken through to full production. Scope of supply includes ma-chined components, metal parts, turned parts, stainless steel parts, alu-

minium parts, brass parts, cast parts, plasticcomponents and sub-assemblies for applications asdiverse as submersible pumps, domestic showers, vending machines and temporary buildings.

Blue Diamond’s Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI)service provides a vital and reliable service, which al-lows customers to have a seamless supply of stock.Blue Diamond will deliver the parts needed at specifictimes solving any problems of storage for thecustomer.

Blue Diamond can also respond quickly to periodsof fluctuation in demand, by offering customers a 12month call-off order agreement for a pre-agreedamount of stock, whereby Blue Diamond allows thecustomer to call off as much or as little stock, as longas all the stock is taken within the agreed year.

Further options include the provision of labelling, bar codes and packaging, which can also be incorpo-rated into customer agreements.Blue Diamond Technologies LtdTel 023 8025 8966Email [email protected]

COMBILIFT added yet anotheraward to its ever growing tallywhen it won the Industrial Vehi-cles category of this year’s BITA(British Industrial Truck Associa-tion) Design4Safety Awards. The company’s reputation fordesigning innovative productsand features to enhance safetyin the materials handling sector

was underlined once again withthe success of its patentedmulti-position tiller arm, whichis a feature common to all itspedestrian models.

Martin McVicar, Combilift’s CEOand co-founder, accepted the tro-phy from BITA Secretary JamesClark during this year’s Logisticsawards which took place on 26th

September. “We are very proud tobe the winners of such an impor-tant award as safety is a crucialissue in our industry. Followingthe FLTA Safety award we receivedfor the Combi-PPT earlier in theyear, this highlights the fact thatour product range is designedwith the utmost safety in mind —not just for operators bu for all em-

ployees who work with or in thevicinity of forklifts and industrialvehicles.”

Combilift’s unique multi-positiontiller enables push button rotationof the rear wheel parallel to thechassis and back, allowing the oper-ator to remain in the safest possibleposition when placing and pickingin narrow aisles; at the side of theunit rather than behind it. This re-duces the risk of the operator beingcrushed or trapped between thetruck and racking and the excellentvisiblity reduces the risks of acci-dents involving other personnel.

Originally designed for theCombi-WR reach stacker, the tillerarm is now incorporated on Com-bilift’s ever growing range ofpedestrian models such as themulti-directional Combi-WR4, theCombi-CS counterbalance stackerand the Combi-PPT poweredpallet truck.Combiliftwww.combilift.com

CNC MACHINERY, EQUIPMENT & SOFTWARE

AN AWARD-winning Irish furni-ture manufacturer producingquality, bespoke joinery, kit-chens and furniture for high endoffice fitouts, says introducingCabinet Vision and Alphacaminto the company, completelychanged the business model.

BSG Design Ltd was founded bybrothers Barry and StephenGoulding, at Trim, County Meath,in 2013. Three years later theyreached the final of “Ireland’s BestYoung Entrepreneur”, and in 2017won the Meath “Best Small toMedium Enterprise” and “OverallBest Business”.

Barry attributes the success toattention to detail in design andplanning, and short projecttimescales. “Using Alphacam andCabinet Vision has pretty muchdoubled the size of the businessby improving efficiency in the pro-duction processes.”

The majority of the work is be-spoke high-end office and kitchenfitouts including reception coun-ters, wall panelling and tea sta-tions for prestigious customerssuch as PayPal, IBM, Ernst & Young,Irish Life, Northern Trust Bank, andGourmet Food Parlour, with theremainder being domestickitchens and cabinetry.

Prior to investing in the 4-axisSCM Pratix CNC nesting machine, the company operated with apanel saw, but now 70 per cent ofthe work goes through CabinetVision, and 30 per cent throughAlphacam, with an overlap ofaround 20 per cent of jobs beinghandled by both.

When Barry started his owncompany, it was always the planthat CNC machinery and theCAD/CAM software would be in-troduced. He now carries out CADdrawings and 3D renders in Cabi-net Vision, and uses its powerfulScreen to Machine tool to com-municate all the engineering datadirectly to the Pratix.

A number of bespoke programs

to manage aspects such as Kekuchips and locks have been set upvia the software’s User CreatedStandards (USCs).

As BSG manufactures cabinetsto suit customer requirements, thecompany uses the software to setdifferent construction methods.“For example, we may be workingon an inframe unit, and the nextjob could be a slab door with achamfer back handle detail and acheckout in the carcass for thehandle rail. Or switching betweenrafix and dowel jointing, as detailsvary from project to project. So it’sinvaluable to be able to vary theconstruction methods on howeach item is made, quickly andsimply.”

He describes how they origi-nally used 2D software for thepanel saw, and that “huge” timesavings have now been achievedby drawing a 3D model in CabinetVision, as all the toolpaths for theCNC are generated automatically.“Screen to Machine sends accu-rate NC code for everything we’veput on the model, out to the ma-chine tool. For example, if we putdrawers or any cabinet fittings onthe model, all the mounting holesare machined in the various posi-tions correctly, without us havingto do anything else.”

Barry Goulding says with Cabi-net Vision taking care of standardshaped cabinets, it was a naturalprogression for them to bring in

Alphacam to tackle more complexcomponents such as curved re-ception counters, and other itemsthat could not be cut with CabinetVision.

The two software brands fromthe Production Software stable ofHexagon Manufacturing Intelli-gence have played a major contri-bution in overcoming BSG’sbiggest challenge, which wasmeeting the extremely shortdeadlines required from cus-tomers. “Basically, once the CADdrawings are done and approved,we are almost there, because get-ting the CNC program, the sawcutlist, assembly sheets and labelswith manufacturing informationfrom the 3D model is very fast.”

While they tender to main con-tractors, they are often recom-mended by architects and interiordesigners, who are impressed withtheir speed, efficiency and thehigh quality product finish. “Oncewe have tendered we get a set ofdrawings, usually as a PDF, andbuild the Alphacam and CabinetVision designs from those. Thoseoriginal drawings from the clientusually just show a general designidea and we need to incorporateaccurate measurements and tech-nical details for our own produc-tion, and for other trades such asplumbing and electrical.”

The designs regularly must takeinto account items which are notfound in standard kitchens, such

as large commercial fridges andcommercial coffee machines. “Andwe frequently have to begin man-ufacture before walls are evenbuilt, to keep within the projecttimeline. Therefore, we oftenagree measurements with thecontractor without going on siteto get drawings approved, andthen change the dimensionsagain just before production. Butit’s so easy to modify the CabinetVision models by dragging anddropping them, and changingtheir dimensions, so that the finalNC code produces perfectly accu-rate cabinets for the room.”

In conclusion, he says the soft-ware has also enabled them to im-plement a degree of lean manu-facturing within BSG, which hashelped change its business model.“We saw considerable benefits assoon as we started using CabinetVision. As it creates each bespokeNC file from the CAD model in theoffice, there is a lot less downtimeon the Pratix, as the manual inputhas been greatly reduced. Theseefficiencies have made theprocess considerably faster. Andthe way parts are presented hasimproved with labelling from Cab-inet Vision’s Label-IT, which meansthat nothing is forgotten once ithas been inputted into the model.Anyone in the workshop can see acomplete overview of the job. Themanufacturing booklet created inCabinet Vision shows what’s re-quired for each project, and thelabels ensure an accurate flow ofinformation from the office to theworkshop, and finally for the fitterson site to see everything that’s re-quired for the installation, evendown to the number of hingesand handles, and that all the fit-tings are there.”AlphacamTel 0118 922 6677www.alphacam.comCabinet VisionTel 0118 922 6644www.cabinetvision.com

CNC MACHINERY, EQUIPMENT & SOFTWARE

JOINERYSOFT has built a repu-tation for continual develop-ment and over the last 15 yearsits software has grown fromsimple quoting and productionsoftware, into a total productionand management tool thatthinks in 3D while losing noneof its costing or productioncapabilities. This 3D technicalcapability has revolutionisedthe company’s ability to controlwindowlines and pod & railCNC’s. Over the last 10 yearsJoinerysoft has had a trackrecord of linking to the SCMrange of windowlines, 1, 20, 40,60; the Soukup Crafter, and theSAOMAD Titanium as well asrunning a variety of cross cutmachines.

James Tanner Joinery is a smallfive man joinery business in Cum-bria. To grow his business JamesTanner has recently invested in a 5axis machine from SCM and com-missioned Joinerysoft to createthe link after dismissing other soft-ware links on the market. Jamessays, “I’ve used JMS for a numberof years and like their quoting andproduction software; other soft-

ware can’t offer the continuity andsupport across my business thatJoinerysoft can. Joinerysoft hasfallen over backwards to meet myrequirements and worked closelywith me to create its first 5 axislink. I’ve been impressed with theirprofessionalism and commitmentto getting the link working asquickly as possible. It’s early daysin configuration but they haveworked tirelessly to ensure mini-mal disruption to my business andhave certainly given me confi-dence in their ability.”

Joinerysoft’s latest developmentexpands its machine links to in-clude its first pod & rail CNC. In tack-ling the challenge of this CNC link,Joinerysoft hasn’t started at the 3-axis entry level machines, butjumped straight into a 5-axis SCMAccord 25fx. Linking its JMS-Prosoftware to the SCM Accord 25fxhas seen Joinerysoft workingclosely with Oertli to include alltooling within its software, enablingthe JMS Software to mimic exactlythe production process and controlpositioning of tools. The JMS linkalso controls sequencing of pro-cesses, clamps and feed speed.

Joinerysoft’s newest release —JMS-Pro 3D is not simply a CADprogram tagged onto it’s alreadycomprehensive offering. With apurpose built joinery program atits heart there is nothing genericabout its CAD drawing. Drillingdown to the component level, its3D design is more than just a se-ries of connected lines and meansthat every production process canbe shown in detail with cross sec-tions and cutouts. This componentlevel detail enables accurate cost-ing, not possible in other CADpackages.

Another advantage of JMS-Prois how quick and easy it is to de-sign joinery items from scratch.Templates speed up drawingwhile still providing the ability tomake every item bespoke.

Working in 3D also provides ac-curate data that can be used tocontrol complex machines thatthink and work in 3D. The vastamounts of data required to runpod & rail CNC machines is neatlyorganised in JMS-Pro and makeslinking to almost any machine apossibility now. The aim behindJoinerysoft’s development is to

provide a total package for everyjoinery manufacturer whateversize they are. Joinerysoft’s Manag-ing Director, Alan Turner, says, “Idon’t want joinery manufacturersto be constrained by their soft-ware and only have limited con-nectivity to a select number ofmachines. Our aim is to ensurethat our software can link to anymachine in the future and enablemanufacturers to grow their busi-ness at the right time for themwith ease.”

With a proven track record ofsuccessful machine links, Joinery-soft says it’s open to requests forspecial links, outside of the norm.JMS-Pro provides all the detailedinformation required to run eventhe most complex machines.Couple this with a team of devel-opers available to support its cus-tomers and Joinerysoft looks like astrong contender. Joinerysoft be-lieve they have the most cost ef-fective solution on the market. Tofind out more get in touch.Joinerysoft LtdTel 01608 [email protected]

SAWS IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES

LEADING manufacturer of power tools,Makita, has launched a new range of TCTmultipurpose saw blades. The blades can cutaluminium, MDF, PVC and laminated chip-board.

The TCT multipurpose saw blades are avail-able in fifteen variations, from 160 mm x 60 T to355 mm x 100 T. The new range contains op-tions that are suitable for both circular saws andmitre saws, with bores ranging from 20 mm to30 mm. Blades are available with kerfs thatrange from 2.2 mm to 3.0 mm and in a variety ofthicknesses from 1.4 mm to 2.2 mm. Regardlessof size, each saw blade has a rake of 5°.

The new range of blades has been manu-factured to a high standard to ensure they offerthe best performance, durability and they arestrong enough to easily cut through aluminium; and equally effectivewhen cutting MDF, PVC and laminated chipboard.

The saw blades are also fitted with specialist Triple Chip Grind (TCG)teeth. Unlike traditional teeth, TCG teeth alternate between a combina-tion of flat and trapezoidal teeth to provide the most effective cut. Thetrapeze tooth cuts out the middle of the kerf, which is then followed bya standard flat top grind (FTG) tooth, which cleans out the corners; hence, creating three separate cuts. What’s more, because of the alternating cutsfrom the TCG design, the life of these blades is extended when comparedto a standard blade used for cutting different types of materials.

The TCT multipurpose saw blades will cut materials up to 15% quickerthan equivalent alternatives, helping tradespeople to work faster on-site.As such, the saw blades can deliver a significant return on investment.

Speaking on the release, Chris Cutler, product manager at Makita UK,commented: “We are delighted to bring another product to market thatwill make work easier for tradespeople.

“The new TCT multipurpose saw blades provide excellent cuttingacross a number of materials and outperform equivalent products on themarket.”Makita UK l www.makitauk.com/products/multi-purpose.html

Stefani Shape Technology:believed to be the best in soft-forming for any type of profile.

As part of SCM’s edgebanding, considerable focus is also beingplaced on market demands inmatters of softforming and“JShape”, areas in which SCM hasled the way for some time now asa genuine specialist in providingsimple solutions for use but onesthat produce top quality results.

The new “J-Side” kit, in particu-lar, has been designed to solve theproblem of complex profiles sothat the straight edging lines upperfectly with the shaped edgingwithout gaps or projections. Thereis no longer any need to carry outthis machining manually or withan additional procedure thanks tothe new SCM solution. Everythingis much simpler, faster and moreefficient thanks to a new unit thatcan be fitted on a standard edgebander and completes all the es-sential stages for an all-roundedgebanding, even this “finishing”.An edgebander equipped like thismeans any kind of edgebandingproblem can be resolved whilework continues, without any inter-ruption, precisely as though itwere working on a normal straightedge. This is a significant step for-ward in being able to extend the

creative potentials of softformingto a growing number of com-panies, a solution which is effec-tive with any kind of edge andwith different thicknesses that canbe applied and worked withoutinterruption.

Maestro Active Watch: totalcontrol of the process, from the of-fice to the machine.

The main role during the opendays in Thiene will be played bythe new supervision and control

system Maestro Active Watch, thanks to its perfect match withthe flexible edgebanding lines.Maestro Active Watch represents awide range of functions: l Real-time control of theprocess: it sets and detects the sta-tus of the different machines, monitors their production andrecords their history.l Display of the plant layout:SCM software is optimised ac-coridng to the plant to be super-

vised, thus allowing the synopticview of the plant, a visual check inreal time of the process in all itsproduction phases, with monitor-ing of the progress of the piecesalong the line.l Zero errors in the insertion ofthe panels in the cell: it alwaysguarantees the panel insertion in-troduction with the correct sidethanks to the Side Finder technol-ogy that shows the operatorwhich edge to insert in the cellnext.l Simulation of machining timesfor productivity checks of the cellfor checks on production times.l Maximum efficiency: it guaran-tees immediate availability of themachining information relating toeach panel, regardless of wherethe panel is in the cycle thanks tothe continuous tracking providedby the supervisor system. MaestroActive Watch also performs acheck of machining feasibility foreach component.l Report generator to improveproduction performance: it allowsyou to generate production re-ports by operator, working shift, program etc and send them to thecompany management software.l Maximum productivity foreach program launched thanks tothe possibility of managing theline “by area”.SCM Group UK LtdTel 0115 977 0044www.scmgroup.me.uk

SANDING & FINISHING

CRISPIN and Gemma FurnitureDesign, of Marlborough, Wilt-shire, is a specialist cabinetmakers and specialist kitchenmanufacturer established 25years ago. The team of four spe-cialises in “things you can’t getanywhere else”, Crispin Forstertold Panel, Wood & Solid Surface:“one off and unusual designs, from super modern to extremelytraditional.” The company bene-fits significantly from repeatbusiness with clients with whomit has a good relationship.

In the Summer of 2017, Crispinneeded to upscale his production. To do this, he purchased a Wood-welder and a clamping system fromAlan Lamont of Lamont Clamping.

“A long standing commercialcustomer contacted us with a bigcontract, which involved a lot ofhardwood frame and door con-struction for bars and commercialkitchens, in sapele, ash and beech. We already had a full order book,so we needed to completelychange our methods of manufac-ture for this contract. The CNCwork was outsourced, but all theframes were made in house. Theyhad to be separately constructedand we had to know they would fittogether perfectly. The Lamont

system was really helpful as itkeeps everything square. It wasvery important it was really, reallyaccurate and that the guys in theworkshop could use it with mini-mal training.

“I chose Lamont because of theclamping system he sold, and be-cause of his phone manner. Alanhas a big variety of differentclamping systems and you couldsee he had really thought aboutapplications. He knew the indus-try and knew what was required, and I was impressed with the qual-ity. It was obvious he was a spe-cialist, as soon as you start talkingto him you know he knows whathe is talking about and offers verygood guarantees.

“We use the clamping systemand Woodwelder a lot for paneldoor manufacturing and also forworktop manufacturing and, whilethe Woodwelder cannot be used forall worktops, for example oilierwoods such as Iroko, it is very goodfor tulipwood, for example. How-ever, really heavy worktops can beleft in the clamp overnight: and theclamping system really is a panacea!

“The Woodwelder, which wasvery well priced, is very, very goodfor panel door and frame con-struction, as well as for dovetail

drawers. We try and do as much aswe can on it, to be honest, as it iseasy to use. And with the Wood-welder, glue dries in minutesrather than hours. This is a signifi-cant time saver.

“Everyone in the workshop is anaccomplished cabinet maker andcan think for themselves, so we arecontinually improving our methodsof working. One great advantage ofthe new system is that, if you arecareful, you can clean the glue offthe reverse side before it is com-

pletely dry. With traditional clamp-ing methods, this is not possible.”

When asked if he would recom-mend the clamping system, theWoodwelder and the company,Crispin replied: “I would highly rec-ommend it! I am very happy withthe purchase and should havedone it 15 years ago: that is myonly regret.”LamontTel 01461 40017Email [email protected]

MIRKA IS LAUNCHING a new extension pad to enhance the versatilityof the Mirka® DEOS 353 CV 81x 133.

The pad’s overhang will enable users to sand further into corners andhard to reach areas, while delivering the high quality smooth finish that issynonymous with the DEOS range.

The new pad is versatile enough to handle multiple applications but hasbeen specifically developed for sanding window shutters and sash win-dows, which have traditionally been tricky to reach with a normal orbitalsander because slats are narrow and difficultto access.

The Mirka® DEOS is the only electric orbitalsander on the market that has been optimisedfor net abrasives by incorporating more than45 holes in the pad. When the tool is com-bined with Mirka’s net and paper abrasives, itoffers an excellent scratch pattern and a dust-free work environment.

Its innovative features incorporate apowerful brushless motor which provides ahigh power to weight ratio when in use. Thedesign team has been able to reduce theweight, size and height of the sander, provid-ing customers with a compact, lightweightand easy to use tool.

In addition, it has an integrated vibrationsensor with Bluetooth technology that can beconnected to a mobile device with the newmyMirka app to give guidance on vibrationlevels.

Pete Sartain, national sales manager — In-dustrial of Mirka UK, says, “As a business, we

want to provide the right tool for the job at hand. Our R&D team has lis-tened to what customers require for jobs they are working on, which hasled to the design and development of the new extension pad. We believethis pad will increase the versatility of the DEOS 353 by making it easier forusers to reach difficult, hard to reach areas, making sanding narrow gaps athing of the past.”Mirka (UK) Ltd l Tel 01908 [email protected] l www.mirka.com/uk/uk

WHEN IT COMES to choosing powertools, professional joiners, shop fittersand kitchen fitters will all have similarcriteria: tools that offer them maxi-mum flexibility, extended run timesand minimal maintenance. Here, KevinBrannigan, marketing manager atMakita, runs through the factors thatprofessional joiners and fitters shouldlook out for when purchasing powertools.

When purchasing power tools, it is im-portant to make sure that you carefullyconsider the features of each product. Atthe end of the day, choosing the righttools will make a significant difference toon-site productivity and efficiency.

Firstly, opting for cordless machineswill ensure that operators have maxi-mum freedom and improved safety onsite. By opting for a cordless machine, the restrictions and hazards asso-ciated with power leads are completely eliminated. The omission ofpower cables also means that tools can be set up quickly and safely, im-proving on-site efficiency.

Innovations in battery technology mean that today’s cordless ma-chines offer impressive run times and minimal hassle for operators. Lead-ing manufacturers are now favouring lithium-ion batteries to powercordless machines due to the wide range of benefits that they offer.

For example, lithium-ion batteries benefit from high energy density, which means that they can continue to work for long periods of time.Lithium-ion batteries also don’t need to be discharged completely be-fore charging, resulting in faster charge times — and they have minimalself-discharge, making it easier for operators to keep track of how muchcharge each battery has between use.

To further assist its customers, Makita has designed its LXT lithium-ionbatteries to communicate with the battery charger through CPU. The CPUbuilt into Makita’s chargers assesses the battery’s condition — and worksto identify issues such as whether the battery has overheated. If this isthe case, the charger will cool down the battery before charging, opti-mising the charging process.

This improved charging also helps to keep the batteries working attheir optimum for longer and results in industry leading run times andcharge times.

For example, Makita 18 V lithium-ion (LXT) batteries can be charged

in as little as 22 minutes (for 3 Ah batter-ies), up to 55 minutes (for 6 Ah batteries).

Another key feature to look out forwhen purchasing power tools is the in-clusion of a brushless motor.

Brushless motors work on electric cur-rents, produced by the on-board electriccircuit. This electric circuit sends elec-tronic currents towards the stator coils, which are located on the conventionalmotor shaft. The stator coils (magnets)then become electromagnetic and theposition of the north and south poleswithin the motor changes — pulling orresisting the rotor (the armature) andmaking it rotate.

Unlike brushed alternatives, brushlessmotors produce no friction. This meansthat tools such as the DRT50ZX4 router/trimmer and DSP600 plunge saws do not

waste energy through heat production and therefore remain cooler whenused for extended periods of time. As a result, operators don’t have toworry about the tools overheating so both the product lifecycle and on-site productivity is improved.

Due to fewer moving parts, brushless motors can be smaller andlighter in design. And as a result, the machines that include them can alsobe smaller and lighter, reducing operator fatigue and increasing on-siteflexibility. The omission of brushes (and therefore friction) also meansthat brushless motors do not incur additional maintenance costs due toreplacement parts.

The inclusion of both Makita’s Brushless Motor and LXT also makes theDRT50ZX4 router/trimmer and DSP600 plunge saws up to 50% more effi-cient as machines that include a standard motor.

Opting for cordless tools that also include a brushless motor can there-fore offer a range of benefits to operators. From increased run times andfaster charge times, through to minimal maintenance and improved on-site flexibility, the DRT50ZX4 and DSP600 can significantly improve on-site efficiency and productivity. This is particularly key for joiners, shopfitters and kitchen fitters, who might need to use the tools for longerperiods of time or for a range of tasks throughout the day.

With over 200 products powered by Makita’s 18 V LXT battery thereare products to suit all trades and industry applications.Makita UKwww.makitauk.com

Pavatex delivers a manor reborn to sustainabilityWOODFIBRE insulation from theNBT’s Pavatex range has beenused to transform the thermalperformance of a listed Geor-gian house in Oxfordshire andensure a new extension, deliv-ered as part of the same renova-tion, is in keeping with thefabric of the original building.

Manor Farm is home to NatashaGinks and her family and, aftercompleting an MSc in ClimateChange and sustainability, Natasha

has been passionate about im-proving the energy efficiency ofher family home, without compro-mising the character or buildingphysics of the heritage property.

Natasha’s understanding ofretrofit best practice first led her touse Pavatex woodfibre insulationand airtightness membraneswhen the roof of the building wasrefurbished five years ago. Conse-quently, when she began to planrenovations for the property and a

new extension, Pavatex was a nat-ural choice.

“We worked with Alex Towler atTransition by Design to design therefurbishment of the main house, the new extension and improve-ments to a former barn on theproperty,” explains Natasha,“which we use as a guest roomand a games room.

“From the outset, increasedthermal efficiency and an airtightbuilding envelope were centralgoals of the project and wewanted to achieve those objec-tives with a vapour permeableapproach that would prevent con-densation from damaging thefabric of the building while pro-viding a healthier and more com-fortable indoor environment allyear round.”

Natasha researched recyclable, sustainable and natural materialsfor all elements of the specifica-tion, seeking insulation specificallydesigned for retrofit installationsin traditionally-constructed prop-erties. She was delighted to findthat the needs of both the walland roof build up could be metwith the Pavatex range for the re-furbishment and new build ele-ments of the project.

For the existing property, 120mm Paraflex was used to insulatebetween the ceiling joists, with

200 mm Pavaflex used betweenthe rafters in the roof space. Forthe walls, Pavadentro, a hygro-scopic internal wall insulation de-veloped specifically for retrofitinstallations, was mounted ontothe stud walls and finished with alime plaster.

The extension is a single storeyaddition that adjoins the existinglisted building and has extendedthree metre ceiling heights tocomplement the grandeur of theoriginal property. The structurewas constructed using clay blocksfilled with insulation and wrappedwith an external installation of 120mm Pavatex Diffutherm; a wood-fibre insulation board designed formechanical fixing to the externalbuilding envelope.

The internal walls were also in-sulated using Pavaflex within thestud wall structure, largely to min-imise the potential acoustic im-pact of hard surfaces used and theheight of the extension. The roofhas also been heavily insulatedwith products from the Pavatexrange, with 220 mm of Pavaflexfollowed by 800 mm ofPavatherm; an insulating sarkingboard designed as a base forcladding or tilling.Natural Building TechnologyTel 01844 338338www.natural-building.co.uk

WOODWASTE & DUST CONTROL

SINCE IT OPENED its first extrac-tion technology department in1988, AL-KO has been commit-ted to manufacturing dust ex-traction units that meet themost challenging industry re-quirements but, with workplaceexposure limits for wood dustchanging in the UK from Janu-ary 2020, what does this meanfor the German extraction com-pany? We put this question andmore to Matthias Schalast, areasales manager at AL-KO ThermGmbH …

How are dust exposure regula-tions changing in the UK and is AL-KO prepared for these changes?

“Next year, the UK is set tochange its workplace exposurelimits for wood dust. They currentlystand at 5 mg/m3 but from January2020, this is set to reduce to 3mg/m3 and by 2024, this figure ispredicted to drop further to just 2mg/m3. This is a big step forwardfor health and safety in the work-place but we design our dust ex-traction systems to coincide withEN and DIN standards which al-ready work to considerably less ex-posure limits than this. For over 10years, German law has stated thatmanufacturers must have a maxi-mum exposure rate of 2 mg/m3 inthe workplace and we’ve contin-ued to focus our research and de-velopment in this area to create acomplete dust extraction offeringthat falls well below this threshold.

“AL-KO’s Power Unit range is aperfect example of this. The mo-bile range has been designed andtested in accordance with theEuropean Norm EN 16770, a regu-lation that was updated in De-cember 2018 to highlight newrisks associated with modernmanufacturing techniques, ma-chinery and internal extractionsystems that boast a volume flowof up to 10,000 m3/h. We created arange that had a guaranteed resid-ual dust content of less than 0.1mg/m3, which means the returnair is 20 times cleaner than the re-quested value UK manufacturersneed to meet by 2024.

“We’ve been able to achievethis impressive figure thanks tothe design of the fan, which is satbehind the filter. In short, the fancreates a vacuum which sucks thedust into the filter house, which inturn separates the dust on the fil-ter surface. We use an extremelyfine filter material with a lowporosity — it’s made from FilterClass M which has a passage level

of less than 0.1% — and guaran-tees this extremely low residualdust level. This means, when UKmanufacturers buy an extractionsystem from AL-KO, they are notonly using a system that meets2020’s new regulations, it is futureproofing the business for the fore-seeable.”

How is AL-KO’s dust extractionrange tested to stay in-line withthe latest industry health andsafety laws?

“All AL-KO dust extraction unitsare manufactured in accordancewith European regulations, na-tional standards and CE require-ments. They are also built andcertified according to the latestATEX guidelines. We have our owntesting facilities at our head-quarters in Germany, which allowsus to test technical values like flow, velocity, the machine’s capabilitiesunder pressure and the resistanceof the unit’s housing. Our ma-chines are also independentlytested by the trade associationevery five years and go throughintermediate testing at our factoryevery 2.5 years. This has led us tocontinually develop our range andtackle the major risks of woodextraction head on.”

What are the risks associatedwith wood dust and how can usingan AL-KO unit reduce this ongoingthreat in the workplace?

“The main risk when extractingwood dust is the threat of explo-sions and fire. This fact has beenwell documented over the years

and as such, wood dust is classi-fied in dust explosion class ST1. Totackle this issue, all our machinesfeature an outer shell that is pres-sure shock resistant to 200 mbarm/s as standard. This means ourmachines are suitable to extract allsubstances with dust explosionclass ST1.

“In addition to this, dust extrac-tors in our Power Unit range from250 upwards are equipped with athermal sensor, which is automati-cally triggered at 70°C. This shutsdown the fan, stops all filter clear-ing and triggers the fire extinguish-ing unit if a risk of fire is detected.Larger units are also equipped witha tank that is filled with water and aspecial antifreeze fluid as standardto further reduce the risk.

“Regulations also restrict pneu-matic cleaning during operationdue to explosion and fire risks. Inbusinesses where filter cleaning isrequired during the operation ofthe system, AL-KO offers an effec-tive ignition protection system thatcan be installed in the suction pipesystem. Features such as these offerongoing monitoring of the extrac-tion system and have been de-signed to prevent the risk of fireand explosions in the workplacewithout restricting performance.”

What new health and safetyfeatures can be integrated intoAL-KO’s dust extraction systemsand how might they benefit theoperator?

“It’s our duty to eliminate oper-ator risk and fulfil the require-

ments set by the industry. Regula-tions don’t tend to change overnight but we still have to committo ongoing research to guaranteethe quality and safety of our ex-traction units remains unchal-lenged. Due to the growingdemand for larger extraction unitsin the furniture manufacturingsector, the risk of fires and explo-sions has never been higher. Theregulations have been adjusted inaccordance with this and as a re-sult, our larger machines comewith an automatic extinguishingsystem as standard and oursmaller units, even though it is notmandatory, come with a built-inextinguisher if required.

“New developments also in-clude our Dust Compartment, which was launched at Ligna2019. It reduces dust exposurewhen it comes to emptying thedust from inside the housing, whilst our Filling Level Sensor trig-gers the unit to switch off auto-matically if the maximum fillinglevel in the chip container isreached, preventing a blockage in-side the filter housing.

“Our dust extraction systemsalso come with a Frequency Con-verter to save energy. This is par-ticularly important whenmanufacturers are using a biggerextraction unit but do not requiremaximum performance at alltimes. Due to the Frequency Con-verter, the fan only produces therequired flow which saves energy, protects the environment and in-

Forward thinking safety from AL-KOs

WOODWASTE & DUST CONTROL

A NORFOLK cabinet maker has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on heating and waste disposal costs.Valdivian Furniture in Norwich is a family run contract furniture company that offers companies the chance to buy high-quality contract furniture

that is built from sustainable materials and manufactured in the UK. The management teamat Valdivian Furniture started doing some research on wood waste heaters via the internet, but then were recommended by one of their business associates to speak to Wood WasteTechnology. The company’s 12,000 ft2 workshop is situated in an old RAF base so, whilst thereis ducting around the workshop from an old hot water heating system, there was no actualheating installed, meaning the company had to rely on electric heaters to heat the workshopduring the cold winter months, which led to some quite large heating bills.

Director, Justin O’Donnell, explains: “Once we worked out how much money we werespending on heating the factory and disposing of waste wood offcuts, investing in a woodwaste heater seemed the best solution. We also realised that, if we could get the wood wasteheater to link into the original ducting system, we could heat the whole building efficientlyby recycling the old ducting system to recycle our waste wood!”

Valdivian Furniture’s decision to invest was made even easier once the business realised itcould receive some grant money to help with the cost of the investment, and the businesspurchased a WT15 during winter 2018.

Justin says: “We are delighted with our purchase. We use a lot of MDF and hard woods inour manufacture, so it’s great to be able to recycle the offcuts of these instead of having tosend them to landfill. We are saving a fortune on waste disposal, and the heater keeps theworkshop nice and warm in the winter. We have calculated that the wood waste heater willpayback in less than two years, which is a fantastic return on investment. Buying a woodwaste heater just makes both economic and environmental sense!”

Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped manycompanies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, de-sign, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company alsoservices all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares. What can we expect from AL-KOin the next 12 months in terms ofdesign and safety?

“At AL-KO, we go above and be-yond to make sure our range sur-

passes health and safety require-ments set by all major standard or-ganisations and we will continueto invest in our manufacturing andtesting facilities. Going forward, wewill be concentrating on our unit’snoise levels. Our units are alreadyone of the quietest on the market,

boasting as little as 69 dB(A) andfalling well below industry’s rec-ommended noise limits, but weare looking at ways to improve onthis even further.

“We are also looking at ways tomake handling even easier, includ-ing the ongoing development of

our gas spring covers and addi-tional design features that willmake one-man maintenance onlarger models possible.

“As the industry pushes for moredigitalisation, we are also develop-ing our control unit so our cus-tomers can benefit from a simpleway to continually monitor ongo-ing activities and ensure the high-est levels of safety are adhered toat all times.

“European regulations and na-tional regulations from profes-sional associations providemanufacturers of dust extractionsystems with guidelines for thesafe construction of these ma-chines. It enables our customers tomake a fair comparison of the sys-tems on the market, whilst ensur-ing the dismantling of tradebarriers. The standards also serveto define test principles for dustextractors which means our ongo-ing commitment to legislationsuch as this, allows us to offer ourcustomers the very best German-engineered dust extraction solu-tions that will stand the test of timeand the ongoing changes to work-place law in Europe and the UK.”TM MachineryTel 0116 271 7155www.tmmachinery.co.uk
