How can both be done and be affordable?

We have rented two spacious 7 bedroom luxury villas at an AMAZING gold crown resort in Puerto Plata for one week January 19 – 26, 2016. We have extended an invitation to our friends and our friend's friends (aka anyone fun!) to come with us - cost is $1000 US per person based on double occupancy (flight is not included).

This all-inclusive holiday will be the trip of a lifetime for many reasons other than the amazing things included in it. We are going to use part of the $1000 trip fee towards completely rebuilding the house seen in these pictures for a Dominican family of 5. We are having the new home built this fall by local Dominican employees of the Dominican Starfish Foundation (DSF) and it will be ready for them to move in by time we get there in January.

We are also putting together a home makeover registry for folks coming on this holiday so they can choose what to bring as a gift for the family when we get there. This is a family friendly vacation - an amazing experience awaits!

You will also have the opportunity to go on other humanitarian excursions if you choose to do so.

Ramon and Luz live with their three children and extended family (see pic of names) in this small two bedroom house. Their home was chosen by Dominican Starfish Foundation (DSF) because of the extremely poor condition it is in. At the time they had not yet met the family that lived in the home. We first met Ramon when he came to cook breakfast at our villa. He was looking at a DSF brochure with pictures of houses they had rebuilt. He recognized one of the houses as his neighbors home and we realized that he was the owner of the home on the DSF list.

We are so excited to be building Ramon and his family a new home.

Dominican Starfish Foundation likes to choose families who help

themselves. Ramon has been working hard to improve his family’s

situation but struggles to get ahead. These are the bricks Ramon has

collected over many months in an effort to make his home a better

place for his family.

Each villa has a private pool. All of the bedrooms have king-sized

beds with private ensuites. The spacious villas come with a full

kitchen which is used by a personal chef to prepare and serve

breakfasts. A chef and waiter also prepare and serve a private BBQ one evening during your stay. Villas come with golf carts for

transportation around the resort. Wi-fi is included in the villas.

Not only can you eat at the most exclusive restaurant on the resort, you will enjoy eating at all of the best restaurants. There are over 12 evening restaurants to choose from. For lunch, choose from more than 10 exclusive lunch locations.

The inspiration for Dominican Starfish

Foundation’s name comes from an essay titled

“The Star Thrower” written by Loren Eiseley. Since

then there have been many adaptations of this

story. It goes something like this . . .

Page 21: Home Make-Over Holiday 2016
Page 22: Home Make-Over Holiday 2016

The poverty in the Dominican Republic is great – just as you help

one person you can see hundreds more who also need help.

Like the story, the Dominican Starfish Foundation began touching

the lives of a few. The simple act of bringing school supplies to a

school where two or three children shared a desk has grown into

many people joining together to build a school for a community

in need, distributing thousands of pound of clothes and shoes,

and building over 20 homes.

Join the “star throwers” of the Dominican Starfish Foundation.

Just find one person and make a difference to their world. And

then another, and another.

On your holiday, enjoy these optional

Humanitarian Excursions . . .

Page 23: Home Make-Over Holiday 2016

Take a short walk from the resort to a poor neighborhood

and up to Maggiolo school rebuilt by the Dominican Starfish

Foundation. Share a treat or a small toy with the children.

Page 24: Home Make-Over Holiday 2016

Visit a men’s Seniors Home. The conditions at this home are

very humble and there is great need here. Donations for

this home go toward rent and food.

Bring some simple supplies to a children’s hospital operated

by a local foundation in the Dominican Republic. Some

ideas are children’s tylenol, blankets, and sleepers.
