Accordingtotheinspectorgroup,betterknownasASHI,millionsofpeoplewillbuyaneworexistinghomethisyear,andthemajorityareontherighttrackwithobtainingahomeinspectionforbuying,sellingandmaintenancepurposes.
ButtheSocietyalsosays"thedifferenceinquality,andtherefore,theprotectionofahomeowners’financialinterests,canbestberealizedwhentheinspectionisperformedbyanexperienced,professionalhomeinspector."
Homeownersbeginspringcleaningandstartpreparingforsummeractivities,includingahomepurchaseorsale.Consumersinthemarketforahomeinspectionneedtorememberthatthepersonchosentodotheinspectionisjustasimportantastheinspectionitself,thesocietysays.

Accordingtopositivepsychologists,saying‘thankyou’isnolongerjustgoodmanners,itisalsobeneficialtotheself.
Totakethebestknownexamples,studieshavesuggestedthatbeinggratefulcanimprovewell-being,physicalhealth,canstrengthensocialrelationships,producepositiveemotionalstatesandhelpuscopewithstressfultimesinourlives.
Butwealsosaythankyoubecausewewanttheotherpersontoknowwevaluewhatthey’vedoneforusand,maybe,encouragethemtohelpusagaininthefuture.It’sthisaspectofgratitudethatAdamM.GrantandFrancescaGinoexamineinaseriesofnewstudiespublishedintheJournalofPersonalityandSocialPsychology(Grant&Gino,2010).
Theywantedtoseewhateffectgratitudehasonthepersonwhoisbeingthanked.Doesitmotivateand,ifso,isitjustbymakingpeoplefeelgood,orisitmorethanthat?
DoublethehelpInthefirststudy69participantswereaskedtoprovidefeedbacktoafictitiousstudentcalled‘Eric’onhiscoverletterforajobapplication.Aftersendingtheirfeedbackthroughbyemail,theygotareplyfromEricaskingformorehelpwithanothercoverletter.
ThetwististhathalfofthemgotathankfulreplyfromEricandtheotherhalfaneutralreply.Theexperimenterswantedtoseewhateffectthiswouldhaveonparticipant’smotivationtogiveEricanymorehelp.
Asyoumightexpect,thosewhowerethankedbyEricweremorewillingtoprovidefurtherassistance.Indeedtheeffectof‘thankyou’wasquitesubstantial:whileonly32%ofparticipantsreceivingtheneutralemailhelpedwiththesecondletter,whenEricexpressedhisgratitude,thiswentupto66%.
HowgratitudeworksTheideathatsayingthankyoumakespeoplemorelikelytohelpinthefutureisunsurprising,althoughthe100%increaseisinteresting,butwhattheresearcherswereinterestedinwaswhythishappens.

Infacttheexperimentersfoundthatpeopleweren’tprovidingmorehelpbecausetheyfeltbetteroritboostedtheirself-esteem,butbecausetheyappreciatedbeingneededandfeltmoresociallyvaluedwhenthey’dbeenthanked.
Thisfeelingofsocialworthhelpspeoplegetoverfactorsthatstopushelping.Weareoftenunsureourhelpisreallywantedandweknowthatacceptinghelpfromotherscanfeellikeafailure.Theactofsayingthankyoureassuresthehelperthattheirhelpisvaluedandmotivatesthemtoprovidemore.
PassitonTheresearchersthenwonderedwhetherthiseffectwouldextendtootherpeople.WouldEric’sthanksmakeparticipantsmorelikelytohelpadifferentperson?InasecondstudyEric’sthanks(orlackofthanksinthecontrolcondition)wasfollowed,adaylater,byanemailfrom‘Steven’askingforsimilarhelp.ThepercentagewhoofferedtohelpStevenwas25%whentheyhadreceivednogratitudefromEric,butthisshotupto55%whentheyhadbeenthanked.
Sotheboosttoparticipant’ssocialworthcarriedoverfromonedaytothenextandfromonepersontothenext.Althoughtheoverallpercentageswereslightlylower,Eric’sgratitudestilldoubledthenumberofpeoplewillingtoprovidehelp.
Inathirdandfourthstudytheresearcherstestedtheirfindingsface-to-faceratherthanoveremail.Theyreachedsimilarconclusions,withincreasesinpro-socialbehaviorof50%inthethirdstudyand15%inthefourthstudy.Theselowerpercentagesshowthattheeffectofgratitudeonmotivationdependsonthesituation.Now,thesestudiesmostlylookedatthesituationwherestrangershelpeachother.It’slikelythattheeffectofathankyouonpro-socialbehaviorismorepowerfulonpeoplewedon’tknow,becausestrangersaremorecautiousabouthelpingeachotherinthefirstplace.
