Home Group Guidelines

1. THIS IS A SAFE GROUP: We will all do our part to create an environment where everyone can be authentic and transparent with their struggles and victories.

2. CONFIDENTIALITY IS KEY: We will all commit to maintaining confidentiality of the personal information that is shared within my Home Group. We understand our Home Group leader reserves the right to contact the Home Group Coach or a Community Pastor if there is a situation that he/she doesn’t know how to handle, a person is being harmed, or if there is ongoing unrepentant sin.

3. COMMITMENT: We will commit to showing up to Home Group meetings prepared and ready to participate. We will make the Home Group meetings a priority, and if unable to attend or running late, will call ahead.

4. COMMUNITY: A Home Group is a growing community, which is open to new members, and as it grows, we will multiply through the raising up of apprentices to further God’s work.

5. NO CROSSTALK: Crosstalk is conversation that leaves others out. No side conversations.

6. LISTENING: Value one another during the discussions by really listening to what is being shared. Don’t be thinking about what you are going to say next or how you are going to respond. Really listen.

7. NO FIXING: We are not here to fix each other, Jesus does that part. Give encouragement, speak truth, and point to Jesus, but don’t try to solve or fix each other.

8. NO RESCUING: When people are sharing something deeply personal, there can be a tendency to try to make them feel better about themselves or the situation by providing immediate condolences. This will often cause them to stop sharing. Resist the temptation to rescue people.

9. WE WANT EVERYONE TO HAVE A CHANCE TO SHARE: Be sensitive about the amount of time you share.

10. WE COMMIT TO RESOLVING CONFLICT BIBLICALLY: When conflict or sin issues between group members arise, we want to make sure that we are honoring God and each other in the way we deal with these issues. The following are a few key Scripture references regarding conflict resolution (there are many others). > Someone has sinned against you (Matthew 18:15-20) > Restoring someone who is in sin (Galatians 6:1-5) > Forgiving a sinner (Colossians 3:12-13) > Reconciling differences (Matthew 5:23-24; Matthew 7:15)

11. USE “I” STATEMENTS: It’s easy to talk about the issues of others, but for our purposes, we want you to put yourself on the table. Try to use “I” statements rather than “them”, “the church”, “us”, “we” “you”, etc.

12. BE SELF-AWARE: Be self-aware of how you are personally affecting the environment through words, actions and non-verbal communication.

13. PAUSE: Allow a pause in conversation after someone share to give the person sharing the chance to finish and the group the opportunity to consider what was just shared before responding.

14. SILENCE: It is important to allow silence in the group as it provides an opportunity for someone to share and for members in the group to process the topic or question being considered.

15. PRAYER: Everyone will pray for the Home Group Leaders, Apprentice(s), and Members of your Home Group.

The Mystery of Jesus Week #7 Revelation

Taken From the Sermon: God is in Control October 18-19, 2014

Warm-ups: (meant to re-connect the group, can be from best or worst times)

How comfortable are you around horses, and what do you like best about them?

When you are really hungry, what kind of food do you crave most?

The Big Idea: A FRESH GLIMPSE OF GOD’S LOVE AND SOVEREIGNTY GIVES US HOPE Background Information for Today’s Lesson: In our previous lesson we were witnesses to the arrival of the Lamb of God to His taking from the hand of

God Almighty the scroll sealed with seven seals. We were told that He is the only one worthy to break

the seals and open the scroll. With chapter six the real action of the book of Revelation begins. John will

introduce a complicated pattern of scenes and pauses as the Lamb breaks the seven seals. Each of these

scenes is like a small, brilliant vignette of God’s judgment working in earth’s history. Despite human-

kind’s misuse of their God-given free will, the world still belongs to God, and is still ruled in accordance

with the eternal laws of right and wrong. This same pattern will be repeated later from a heavenly per-

spective with the sounding of seven trumpets.

The first four seals (6:1-8) are unified by their common image, the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. The

description of this vision has features borrowed from Zechariah 6:1-5, which also involves horses of

various colors. With the breaking of the fifth seal the action shifts back to heaven where we see the souls

of martyred Christians are under the altar of heaven, crying out for vengeance. They are told they must

wait a little longer. Meanwhile, they have a place in heaven, clothed in white robes of purity, victory and

service (6:11). The breaking of the sixth seal borrows symbolism from many parts of the Old Testament;

the earthquake from Haggai (2:6), the sun turned black and the moon turned to blood from Joel (2:31),

the stars fallen from heaven like figs from a fig tree, the sky rolled up like a scroll (Isa. 34:4). The use of

cosmic convulsions to describe social and political upheaval is well established in biblical prophecy.

Before the breaking of the seventh seal there is an interlude with two reassuring visions. In the first

vision, four angels hold back the four winds, causing a temporary suspension of judgment while believers

are marked with a seal (7:2-3). The seal on their foreheads is a sign that these individuals belong to God

and are under His power and protection. This protection is not physical, but spiritual. The explicit

number, 144,000, symbolizes the complete number of those saved. The second vision offers further

encouragement by providing a glimpse of the church at the end of age, comforted and rejoicing with God

in heaven.

The Mystery of Jesus Week #8 Revelation

Warm-ups: (meant to re-connect the group, can be from best or worst times)

In childhood, what was the warning or reminder you received most often?

When you hang pictures, do you use a measuring tape and a level or just hold it up and put

the nail in the general vicinity?

The Big Idea: GOD’S JUDGMENT IS NOT SEPARATE FROM GOD’S LOVE

Background Information for Today’s Lesson:

In Lesson seven the Lamb of God opened the first six seals on the scroll and ushered in a series of

dramatic scenes on earth and in heaven. The sequence of opening the seven seals was broken by a

pause in heaven during which the servants of God received a seal on their foreheads. Chapter seven

closed with a promise of comfort and consolation. The sequence is now resumed in chapter eight with

the seventh seal being broken. Rather than another catastrophic event, silence ensues “for about half

an hour” (8:1). This is more than a simple pause to heighten the drama of what is to follow, for John

notices that in this quiet space the prayers of the saints are being presented before God. It is the

thunder, lightning and earthquake that seem to be recorded almost as an afterthought.

With the breaking of the seventh seal comes the presentation of seven angels bearing trumpets. Like

the opening of the seven seals (6:1-8:4), the sounding of the seven trumpets falls into two groups of

four and three.

The judgments that follow each of the first four trumpets are elemental forces of nature, which are

directed against the cosmos and which affect humanity indirectly. The last three trumpets call forth

demonic forces, falling directly on humanity. Dire though the imagery is, the overall intention of the

sounding of the seven trumpets is not to inflict vengeance but to bring people to repentance. “But the

rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent . . . ”(9:20). The issue of all the

judgments, the essence of all the rewards, is to have a more perfect access to God and a clearer vision

of His splendor.

Between the sixth and seventh trumpets, as before the seventh seal, there is an interlude. This brings

us to our story passage today.

Warm-ups: (meant to re-connect the group, can be from best or worst of times)

How do you feel about snakes? Do you have a short story to illustrate this?

What are some things you have done to protect a child in your care?

The Big Idea: GOD’S PEOPLE CAN AND WILL HAVE TO ENDURE THROUGH SATAN’S SCHEMES Background Information for Today’s Lesson: Our last lesson brought us through the action and interludes that followed the breaking of seven seals and

the sounding of seven trumpets. We learned that God’s judgment is not separate from His love. Chapter

eleven concluded with worship and a reference to opening up the Temple of God. In Chapter 12, John

returns to an earlier stage and gives a recap of the birth and ascension of the Messiah and the casting

down of Satan, the dragon.

Our story for this lesson will illustrate the fundamental conflict between God’s people and God’s enemy,

Satan. Beginning in Chapter thirteen, we see some of the expression of that conflict. Two of Satan’s agents

appear. These two beasts, along with the dragon, comprise a counterfeit trinity. One beast, rising out of

the sea, symbolizes the political power, which in John’s day was the Roman Empire. It was the embodiment

of the antichrist, a world power in opposition to the reign of Christ. The emperor cult of Rome deified the

Caesars and mandated their worship. Emperor worship was enforced by local officials. These may be

represented by the second beast which John saw coming up out of the earth. The details of John’s vision

are symbolic. Thus the “mark” on the right hand or the forehead (13:16) is meant figuratively. A person’s

spiritual worldview will be reflected in what they think (forehead) and do (hands) (Deuteronomy 6:8).

Following the account of the counterfeit trinity, John once again provides an interlude that is intended to

reassure the church amid its trials and persecutions. John sees the Lamb standing on Mt Zion with 144,000

of the redeemed. As mentioned earlier, this is a symbolic number, representing all of those who remain

faithful. Here John again appears to adopt the imagery found frequently in the Old Testament where any

contact with pagan worship was called “fornication” or “adultery.” Hence, the 144,000 are those who have

not defiled themselves by participating in pagan worship.

The famous “number of the beast” is mentioned at the end of chapter thirteen. See the Glossary for

additional details.

What first hand experience have you had with a natural disaster? What the most vivid

memories about it?

Which is the most fun for you, to give a prize or reward, or to receive one?

The Big Idea: BE READY FOR GOD’S LOVING WRATH Background Information for Today’s Lesson: The writer of the book of Revelation has carefully laid out a series of parallel and yet ever-progressing

panels. These display God’s plan from different vantage points. At the same time, the different accounts

reinforce one another and bring before the reader, over and over again, the truth that God rules and

overrules in the affairs of humankind. Earlier in chapter 6 we were told of the opening of the seven seals,

followed in chapters 8 and 9 by the seven trumpets announcing additional woes. Now in chapters fifteen

and sixteen we come to an account of the seven bowls full of God’s wrath poured successively by each of

the seven angels.

Before describing the seven plagues of divine wrath, John portrays the safety of “those who had

conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name” (15:2). These victors, with harps of God in

their hands, “sing the song of Moses . . . and the song of the Lamb” (15:3). This is not the same song of

Moses found in Exodus 15:1-18, but like it, celebrates deliverance from deadly danger. Following the

victor’s song of praise John sees the temple of the tent of witness (testimony) opened and out of it came

seven angels. “Then one of the four living creatures gave the seven angels seven golden bowls full of the

wrath of God” (15:7). The Greek word for “bowl” denotes vessels that are broad and shallow, shaped like

a saucer, so that their contents can be poured out completely and suddenly. God’s wrath is completed, It is

done (16:17).

Prior to reading chapter sixteen it is good to be reminded that the author’s descriptive details of the

plagues are not to be taken literally. As was mentioned earlier, these are Apocalyptic descriptions of

symbols.

How is God’s justice and wrath consistent with His love and mercy?

Hands

How does God’s justice and final wrath motivate me to love?

Head

Scattered throughout the descriptions of the plagues we are given glimpses of how humankind responded (16:9, 11, 21). Describe those responses.

Heart

Have you doubted God’s justice? Have you wanted mercy for yourself but justice for others? Explain.

Hands

Are you fearful when you contemplate God’s judgment actually being poured out? Where do you find hope that helps you deal with this fear?

Male Child The promised Messiah First Beast Identified as the anti-christ or the man law-less. Second Beast The henchman of the first beast. Mark of the beast May symbolize human deficiency at the number (666) of a man in contrast to divine completeness (symbolized by seven). Could be unregenerate man is persistently evil, who bears the mark of the beast in all he does. Another sign in Heaven (15:1) Like the woman and the dragon (12:1,3), these seven angels signify another turning point in the war between Christ and Satan: the completion of God’s triumph in destruction of His enemies. Those who conquered the beast with Harps of God in their hand and singing the song of Moses and the Lamb. The song of Moses was celebrating Israel’s exodus, is fulfilled in the song of the Lamb, which tells of a greater redemption of a new kingdom of priests. Pure bright linen with golden sashes around their chest A preview of the bride’s holy beauty. The angels golden sashes resemble that of the Son of Man. Sanctuary filled with smoke from the glory of God The smoke that filled the temple refers to the shekinah cloud first associated with the tabernacle and then the temple. It symbolizes God’s special presence and that he is the scourge of judgments. His awesome presence in the temple until the plagues are finished prohibits even the angels from entering. Angels pour out the Seven Bowls of God’s Wrath The bowls present varying perspectives on the final destruction of the first heaven and the first earth. The first four bowls inflict plagues on the same spheres as the first four trumpets: earth, sea, rivers and springs, and the sun. The trumpet judgments were limited to one-third of each sphere, but the destruction poured out from the bowls is total. the throne of the beast The throne of the beast is not immune or protected from God’s just wrath. the great river Euphrates Babylon used the river as a defense barrier. This symbolizes God’s removal of restraint on Satan’s capacity to assemble a global conspiracy against the church. Armageddon means “Mount Megiddo” in Hebrew. In ancient Israel, Megiddo was a plain not a mountain; but it was the site of key battles., so in the symbolic geography of John’s visions it aptly represents the global combat zone in which the final conflict between Christ and Satan will be fought.
