“Don’t limit a child to your own learning for he was born in another time”
Early this Term, Year 11 students and their parents had the opportunity to sit in on a presentation by Margot Braithewaite from the Board of Studies (BOS) and Mr Mark Sutton, Deputy Principal. This presentation detailed how the HSC works and gave options on how to apply for University and TAFE. It also assisted Year 11 to begin to prepare for the HSC. Year 10 the end of stage five is approaching In the next few weeks Year 10 will need to complete all examinations and assessments in order to meet course requirements and be eligible to proceed to stage six studies and commence Year 11. Year 10 students will also have the opportunity over the up and coming weeks to participate in work experience and the ‘Australian Business Week’ program. Both of these experiences give skills and understandings, commitment to tasks, organisation and management skills that not only help in the future but assist with senior studies. I would encourage all to participate in such worthwhile programs.
NAPLAN Results All parents of Year 7 and Year 9 have received the results for the 2013 National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy. These were given to students to deliver to parents towards the end of last term so if any parents did not receive these results please contact the school. We are very pleased with this year’s results, which indicate continued growth in both Literacy and Numeracy. Although NAPLAN is only one measure of student ability the results give teachers valuable data to inform future programming. If you wish to discuss these results please don’t hesitate to contact the school.
2014 School Leadership On the 6th of November 2013, we will be holding the Induction Ceremony for the 2014 School Leadership teams. This is the first year that we have chosen to celebrate the induction of our Captains and Prefects, House captains and SRC together. The number of students who undertake these very important roles is a testament of the great leadership skills amongst our students. We are very proud of all the young men and women who chose to stand for a role as a school leader. Whether they were successful or not, it is a mark of their integrity and determination to make a difference to the lives of others. Congratulations to all who nominated and all who were selected within each of these teams.
Captains and Prefects: Once again our student body have elected a wonderful group of senior students to represent them and the school in a range of capacities. Our elected Captains and prefects are exemplary role models and diplomats for our school, a very prestigious position. It gives me great pleasure to announce the School Captains and elected Prefects for 2014. Over 16,500 doodles were entered this year. Sophia’s doodle has been made into a postcard for Google distribution.
Jonny Hawkins Year 9 – whose artwork has been selected as one of 50 chosen to be included in
the 2014 operation Art touring exhibition commencing at the Art Gallery of NSW and then touring
regional galleries. His artwork will then be given to Westmead Children’s Hospital for permanent

Shariss Vartanian Year 10 – recipient of a ‘Commended Award’ as part of the 2013 Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Community Languages. This is a remarkable achievement and reflects Shariss’s commitment.
Diyaa Rajbhandari Year 7, Charlotte Dawson Year 7, Ashleigh Grech Year 7, Kiara Whitton Year 7- These four young ladies competed in the Power House Physics competition. Steven Jessep Year 12 and Emma Lakeman Year 12 – presented a Sydney West Secondary Sports award for outstanding achievement in 2013. Bush fire appeal: Due to the devastating fires recently many people lost homes and all their belongings. Glenwood High School student Volunteers are appealing for donations of children’s toys and books to give as Christmas gifts and to restock Pre-school centres. If you would like to donate a new toy please send it in to the front office or library. The student volunteers will wrap and label. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
MADDNESS: Tuesday 5th November saw us celebrate the creative and performing talents of our students. Artworks were exhibited in a range of mediums from painting, drawing, sculpture and photography. Audiences were then entertained by amazing performances in Drama and Dance. This annual event was once again a great success and showcased the broad skills, abilities and talents of our Creative and performing Arts students. A big thank you to the CAPA faculty for making this event possible. Till next time - Belinda Young
Year 9 are now halfway through their Stage 5 studies and need to ensure all of their assessment tasks are completed before the end of the year. Students in this cohort are studying under the new Record of School Achievement (RoSA), which requires students to satisfactorily complete their Stage 5 studies before they are issued with a credential from the NSW Board of Studies. This is the time for Year 9 students to practise good habits by studying hard for their examinations and ensuring they start next year with all assessment tasks from this year completed.
Year 10 students have a number of important activities in the second half of Term 4. Students will
complete final examinations from Monday, 11 November 2013 to Friday, 15 November 2013. Year
10 will also participate in Australian Business Week (ABW) from Monday, 25 November 2013 to
Friday, 29 November 2013. The cost of ABW is $75 and provides students with a wonderfully
engaging opportunity to simulate running a business through the use of creativity, marketing and
design skills. Students always enjoy participating in ABW and we look forward to viewing student
presentations at the end of the program. Year 10 students will then participate in work experience
from Monday, 2 December 2013 to Friday, 13 December 2013. Year 10 will then attend school as
normal until the end of the year.
Year 11 students have just commenced HSC courses and attended an information session held in
the first week of Term 4 where they heard from a representative from the NSW Board of Studies.
Students are reminded to submit their complete pink and dark blue forms to the front office to
ensure we have all of their paperwork for the HSC. Parents are reminded that it is school policy
that students maintain 12 units of study for the HSC unless special permission is received from the
school. Academic research conducted by the NSW Board of Studies indicates that students who
complete 12 units of study achieve better overall results.
Year 12 students are now finishing their last HSC examinations and are to be commended for their
dedication and commitment. We look forward to the release of their results on Wednesday, 18
December 2013.
Assessment Issues
If a student in Year 9 to Year 12 is absent for an assessment task, they must contact the relevant
deputy principal as soon as possible and provide a medical certificate for the absence and/or other
documentation justifying the absence. This is particularly important for Year 11 students who have
just commenced their HSC courses. From this point onwards, all assessment tasks for Year 11
contribute to the overall calculation of the student’s final rank and mark that is submitted to the
NSW Board of Studies. The school’s assessment policy was recently emailed to all Year 11
students at the commencement of their HSC courses and can be downloaded from the school’s
In particular, our website has images of approved and non-approved shoes to assist parents in
purchasing appropriate footwear. The following are not acceptable forms of footwear and must not
be worn to school:
The school closely monitor the wearing of the school uniform. We ask parents to assist this process by ensuring that their child is wearing the school uniform. Girls are reminded that skirts are worn in Term 1 and Term 4 (pants are not permitted).
SHOULD HE OR SHE CARRY THEIR OWN EPIPEN® OR ANAPEN®
TO AND AT SCHOOL?
What is this article about?
If you have told the school that your child is diagnosed a risk of anaphylaxis you should have
received a letter from Mrs E. McMaster, Principal /Ms B. Young, Rel. Principal.
This article provides more information about anaphylaxis.
What is an EpiPen® and an Anapen®?
EpiPen® and Anapens® are the emergency treatment for children who are having an anaphylactic reaction.
What is anaphylaxis?
Anaphylaxis is a severe and sometimes sudden allergic reaction. If your child has been diagnosed by a doctor as being at risk of anaphylaxis there are some important things to remember that will help the school to support your child’s health care needs.
Why you need to keep us informed if your child is diagnosed as being at risk of anaphylaxis or if his or her condition changes. This includes if they have an anaphylactic reaction while
not at school.
The school can only respond to risks it knows about. Please keep the school informed by sending us the information or calling Mrs Achar on 9629 9577 so that we can plan to support your child at school.
Why you need to provide the school with your child’s current ASCIA Action Plan for
Anaphylaxis and an EpiPen® or Anapen® signed by their doctor
The plan sets out the steps the school needs to follow in an emergency. It is essential for us to have this to keep your child safe.
We will keep a copy of your child’s ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis stored with your child’s EpiPen® or Anapen®.
Why it is important to talk regularly with your child about some simple steps to help keep
them safe
It is important to regularly talk with your child about when and where they are at risk of contact with the things they are allergic to and how to avoid this. If you have told them not to take part in sharing food at school, regularly remind them of this.
Reassure them that if they do come into contact with something they are allergic to or they feel
unwell at school they won’t get into trouble. They need to tell a teacher immediately.
Why does the school need to know if your son or daughter is carrying their own EpiPen® or
Anapen®?
Staff need to know your child carries an EpiPen® or Anapen® in an emergency. For this reason this information will be included in your child’s individual health care plan.
They also need to be able to find it quickly so it is important that it be in an easily identifiable and accessible spot. (e.g. not a locker). `To find out more go to the Department’s public schools website: http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/studentsupport/studenthealth/conditions/anaphylaxis/index.php
Consider whether your child should carry their own EpiPen® or Anapen®
If your child has been diagnosed with anaphylaxis they can carry their own EpiPen® or Anapen® to school and at school. The forms we sent home recently included a section regarding this. Please inform the school if you haven’t done so already about whether your child carries an epipen or not.
If you request that your child carry an EpiPen® or Anapen® with them to school and at school you will still need to provide the school with at least one additional EpiPen® or Anapen® for storage in a central location within the school and for access by staff in an emergency.
The school will contact you about any request you make for your son or daughter to carry their own EpiPen® or Anapen®.
CAREER UPDATE
Year 9 students going into Year 10 in 2014 can start thinking about where they would like to organise work experience for 2014. If you are interested in working in a hospital applications are now open by the Western Sydney Local Health District for students who would like to experience Nursing, Physiotherapy, Pathology or Dental. All applications must to be submitted this year before December. There are limited positions for each area and late applications will not be accepted. For an application form please see the Career
Adviser, Mrs Fevre located in the Library, Career Office.
During Terms 3 and 4 the Department of Education and Communities is introducing a new medical recording system. All schools are required to update their medical records to ensure they have the most up-to-date information on your child’s health.
The new forms help us collect your child’s important medical information, and the introduction of new systems will mean we will be able to better manage the daily and emergency health needs of your child.
These forms have already been sent to the parents of students that have indicated to us that they have a health/medical condition noted on our files. If you did not receive a letter and medical form for completion and your child does have a health/medical condition, could you please complete the attached Medical Form and forward to the front office. Please ensure that you attach a current Action Plan signed by your child’s doctor if your child’s medical condition is of a high risk nature.
When completing these forms we ask that you take care to answer every question, be accurate
and write legibly.
If your child has an allergy condition there are eleven (11) questions, if your child has other medical conditions there are seven (7) questions. If your child’s condition relates to allergy and other medical conditions, all questions must be answered in full. A current action plan signed by your child’s doctor must be attached, if required.
Please complete and return these forms as soon as possible.
Forms can be delivered to the front office or alternatively you can return the forms by mail.
We appreciate your support as we start collecting the information, and if you have any questions please call us on 9629 9577.
Yours sincerely
Ms B Young
Principal (Rel)
