History of Singapore• In 1918, Singapore was founded as a British Trading Colony.• Singapore was under the Japanese occupation for 3 and a half

years starting from 1942.• When World War II ended in August 1945, British forces returned

but ceased in 1946.• Singapore became part of the Federation of Malaya in 1948.• Malaysia was formed in 1963 and comprised the Federation of

Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah. • On 9 August 1965, Singapore separated from Malaysia. Singapore

became a democratic and independent nation, lead by the 1st Prime Minister, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew under the People’s Action Party.

• Singapore was admitted to the United Nations on 21 September 1965.

Environmental Factors• The climate in Singapore is tropical hot, humid and rainy.• There were two distinctive monsoon seasons: North-

eastern Monsoon (Dec - Mar) and South-western Monson (Jun - Sep)

• Inter monsoon happens frequently in the afternoon and early evening with thunderstorms and rain.

• Currents Issues -(i) Industrial Pollution; (ii) Limited Natural Fresh Water Resources; (iii) Smoke and Haze caused from forest fires in Indonesia
