Trend Guide

During lockdown, we launched free digital nursery, home and styling advice services online and via telephone in response to the evolving needs of our customers and to provide much needed inspiration, guidance and support during isolation. In just three weeks, over 1,000 appointments took place and we look forward to expanding these to include services such as wine tasting, yoga lessons and cooking classes soon.

Our customers have adapted quickly but are now looking for simple solutions to zone spaces within the home; creating a visual partition in a room, with bookcases or rugs, that creates dedicated space for work, school or exercise. But this time has also given us the chance to rediscover a love of decorating, our customers are reimagining their homes and looking to reflect their personalities more through colour, shape and art.

We have been excited as a design team to see the coloured furniture we have been introducing in the last few seasons become so popular and have introduced even more for autumn. And although these are uncertain times, we still see that sustainable choices and solutions that help us lead more eco-friendly lives are at the forefront of our minds. Though we are emerging from lockdown and eager to embrace our communities again, we know that our love of the home will remain as we move into a new way of living - finding new ways that our spaces can work for, and reflect, us.

Philippa Prinsloo, Partner and Head of Product Design, Home

Over the past few months we have seen the biggest period of change of many of our lifetimes. During these times many of our customers have found refuge in their homes. The COVID-19 pandemic effects have been far reaching but in amongst the news updates and homeschooling, we have seen customers carve out time for joy: updating their homes, learning new skills and embracing play no matter what their age.

This year we have seen the trends that we have been shining a light on for the past few seasons, such as flexible working, exercise and wellbeing at home and restaurant-style dining, suddenly become a way of life for most of the nation. At John Lewis we have seen unprecedented sales of office chairs and desks but also a surge in demand for cookware as we dusted off cookbooks and items such as needlepoint sets, sewing machines, knitting yarn and crafting kits.

The different pace of life has reconnected many people with our homes and urged us to realise the true potential ofthe four walls around us. This has undoubtedly sparked inspiration in many as johnlewis.com had 33% more searchesfor wallpaper and paint and 45% more searches for cushions since the start of lockdown in comparison to the same time last year. The country has found delight in warm throws on rainy days and colourful rugs in hallways as a way to seek comfort in the new world they find themselves in.

Japanese and Scandi interiors have long been regarded for their approach to simple yet hard working spaces. Both are well known for celebrating a home that is functional and beautiful, creating a minimal aesthetic that is still full of life. Blending the two styles as we have done here gives both a structured and relaxed feeling to the scheme softening the utilitarian order with natural elements. Blonde woods and caning are contrasted with dark stains, whilst we play with textures to soften any edges. Reactive glazes play on nature’s unique patterns, whilst a wallpaper of bamboo in a soft watercolour style brings the outside gently in.

Boucle - Slipper & ScoopWe’re really excited to introduce boucle into our assortment for this season, it has a beautiful soft loopy texture and a tactile fabric that brings comfort and style. We’re launching it in two different shapes, in our Scoop chair and our new Slipper armchair. The Scoop is a cosy curved armchair, ideal for comfort and ease while our Slipper chair has a contemporary metal frame that contrasts the classic weave and is perfect for statement piece in the living room.

Following the success of our New Eclectics trend in SS20, we explore this colourful, clashing world of design further. Hunting through our archives we have taken inspiration from both classic and 20th century patterns to create a rich and layered story for AW20. The colour palette comprises Mallard green, Navy and Saffron, paired with embellished velvets and brass. As customers have been increasingly turning to wallpaper to create a statement in their homes, we have re-imagined archive pieces to make them work for the modern day customer. We see classic shapes return as upholstered headboards take on elegant and impressive lines and British favourites like the wingback armchair take centre stage.

Retro ModernismDrawing on the mid-century modern of the 50s and the achingly cool 70s, Retro Modernism is for those who use interiors to express their creative sides. This sophisticated and sleek look is easily achievable and can be toned down or turned up to match your personal tastes. Stick to neutral walls and add colour to the room with furniture pieces in rich vermillion orange and plum tones. Polished silver and high shine finishes will also give a lustrous quality to the look, whilst dark woods, cut velvet and art deco geometrics add depth. Storage has everything out on show so that collections of books, magazines, records and other treasured objects will form the focal point of a room. Mix modern luxe with classic mid century pieces to keep it modern and cool.

Motion Cord Chair £199 for a pairThis is the first cord upholstered chair we’ve launched, designed in Denmark exclusively to John Lewis. Cord fabric is very on trend at the moment, along with slender metal frames. The deep curved backrest also provides a lot of support, whilst being great value.

Egg Lamp The egg table lamp was inspired by 1960s Bauhaus minimalist sculpture. It plays with the compositions between two semi-spheres, and it creates an illusion of sorts through highly polished black chrome finish. I wanted to design a ‘functional sculpture’ lamp which could sit easily in different styles of interiors seamlessly. I referenced and was inspired by French artist Yonel Lebovici’s sculptures in the 1960s.
