Page 2: Home automation

Introduction

• Automation refers to the technique of operating or controlling a process by electronic devices, reducing human intervention to the minimum.

• It includes centralized control of lighting, HVAC(heating, ventilation and air conditioning),appliances, security locks of gates and doors .

Page 3: Home automation

History

• In 1966 Jim Sutherland, developed a home automation system called "ECHO IV“

• This was a private project and never commercialized.• Remote and intelligent control technologies were

adopted by the building services industry and appliances manufacturers world wide.

Page 4: Home automation

Why need it!• Forgetting to switch off while leaving home.

• Needs arising to operate devices while we are not able to access them physically.

• Control and integration of security system and also the potential for central locking of all perimeter doors and windows.

Topics to be covered:

• Locker security• Fire security• Window security• Tank filling• Parking light• Room automation• Garden lightning

Why GSM is chosen for home automation!

• GSM is the most popular standard for mobile phones in world.

• Its ubiquity makes international roaming very common between mobile phone operators.

• In GSM both signalling and speech channels are digital.

• GSM pioneered a low cost (to network carrier)alternative to voice calls, SMS, which is now supported on other mobile standards as well.

What is GSM ?

• Global System for Mobile (GSM) is a second generation cellular standard developed to cater voice services and data delivery using digital modulation.

Basic Working

User sends commands via SMS

Mobile at the system transfers it to Micro controller

The Microcontroller operates the Devices according to the command received.

Advantages & Disadvantages

• It is used to make life easier • It is used to improve security of our home and

office• This system is fully automated. So once this system

is installed inside the home, then it does not required any human interaction to operate.

• This system is cost effective and fast also. If the microcontroller fails, then it leads to

catastrophe

Page 15: Home automation

Conclusion

• It is a unmanned system.• By this system we can convert a home into E-Home.• The proposed system can control all electrical items

from anywhere in the world, as long as GSM has coverage of the service provider.
