Flexible accessible training

We know what a challenge it has been for all of us in 2020. We have adapted to being able to offer a lot of our courses virtually and a huge range of courses which can be accessed online. The vast majority of carers have stepped up to the challenge and have completed and exceeded what has been expected of you. I know you prefer to attend our courses face to face, and I hope that this will be the case by the end of 2021.

The programme we have put together for 2021 will begin virtually, but hopefully will be adapted to face to face as the year goes on, and when it is safe to do so.

In 2021 we will continue to offer core/mandatory courses, and these are open for ALL foster carers as well as your support network.

We expect all newly approved carers to attend a range of core courses and for you all to keep these updated as part of your continued professional development. This means repeating these courses every 2 to 3 years, in which case It may be that your booking form is prepopulated to reflect this. We have also introduced a second first aid trainer, so that those of you that have completed our first aid training a number of times should be able to benefit from a new approach.

We will continue to offer books and further resources to support your learning.

We will also continue on our journey with the therapeutic fostering programme which we will complete by the end of 2021.

In response to some of your feedback, and your needs and challenges you have faced this year, we have kept some things the same and also changed and introduced others.

• We hope you will see how we have tried to respond to a real development and keep the training relevant and varied.

• In 2021 we will also ensure you know which core courses cover which standards.

• In 2021 we will also be offering our courses in clusters enabling you to become an expert

• We would like all primary carers to complete 4 courses in 2021 and all secondary carers to complete 2 courses. These may be face to face or online.

Face to Face / Virtual Courses

All of our courses are stand alone, meaning we hope you will benefit from attending.Every course adds to your training profile and comes with a certificate of attendance. These will start virtually in 2021 and will move to face to face as soon as it is safe to do so.

Clustered Courses

Some of these courses have been clustered together. If you complete all of the courses within a group you will gain an AQA recognised achievement at the end of it.

They are often blend of core and additional training courses.

This will also appear on your training profile and gives local authority placement teams an idea of what you specialise in.

Equally you do not have to attend all of the courses in a group if you do not want to.

Stabilisation

TRAINING BROCHURE 2021

Page 16: homefindingandfostering.co.uk · Web viewThe Social Care Training Hub is a Nationwide provider of Face to Face and On-line training specific to fostering, children services and children’s

Stabilisation is the first in a series around Trauma Informed Practice. The first component will consider what trauma is, how it manifests itself and how it can affect our internal working model.

The focus is on strengthening the caregiving system surrounding children through enhancing support, skills, and relational resources for adult caregivers. The caregiver-child relationship is addressed through an emphasis on three primary targets:

1. Supporting caregivers in recognising, understanding, accepting and managing their own emotional and physiological responses, particularly as relates to and impacts on parenting or child-care

2. Enhancing rhythm and reciprocity in the caregiver-child relationship, and helping caregivers deepen their understanding of child behaviour

3. Building effective, trauma-informed responses to child and adolescent behaviour

Adaptation

Adaptation is the second in a series around trauma-informed practice. Within the adaptation model, the framework will address critical factors associated with resilience in stress-impacted populations

A goal of the adaptation unit is to go beyond pathology reduction and to increase the positive/resilient outcomes amongst those receiving the response. Competency goals include:

1. Growing opportunities for choice and empowerment, and skill in recognising choice points and ineffective decision-making

2. Identification and exploration of a range of aspects of self and identity, and building coherence through the development of a narrative around crucial life experiences, including traumatic exposures

Integration

Integration is the third in a series around Trauma Informed Practice and part of the "Trauma Recovery Process". Many young people who experience trauma are referred for treatment services or struggle in settings like school as a result of challenging behaviours, out of control emotions, and impulsive or disorganised physicality

Underlying these challenges is often a difficulty with regulation – of feelings, of thoughts, and physical experience. This treatment emphasises cultivating youth awareness and skill in identifying, understanding, tolerating, and managing internal experiences. Regulation and Integration are addressed through:

1. Supporting youth in developing an appreciation and understanding of feelings, body states, and associated thoughts and behaviours
