From the Pastor’s Desk Today, Aug. 15th, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assump on of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven. The Assump on is one of the Holy Days of Obliga on in the liturgical year. Sadly, it is usually the least a ended of the Holy Days, possibly because it occurs during summer. So, I’m glad that more Catholics will be able to celebrate it this year, as it falls on a Sunday. And, just to clarify what we are actually celebra ng today: the doctrine of the Assump on was defined on Nov. 1, 1950 by Pope Pius XII when he wrote: “We pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.” On other note, I want to let everyone know of a great upcoming opportunity to support our parish. Bernadine Malus, a long- me parishioner, sadly passed away last year. Her cousin, Katherine Powers, is hos ng an Estate Sale at Bernadine’s home. Katherine would like to offer the sale as a fundraiser for Holy Virgin Martyrs Parish. Items for sale will include an ques, housewares, furniture, oriental rugs, etc. All items can be taken for a free-will dona on, and the proceeds will go towards the construc on and renova on of our new Parish Hall, mee ng rooms, and Rel. Ed. classrooms. In addi on, Katherine has graciously offered a matching fund – she will match whatever dollar amount the Estate Sale brings in and donate it to our parish! The sale will take place on Saturday, Aug. 28th from 10:00am to 7:00pm at 4616 Grace St. in Schiller Park. Please plan to bring your own bags, boxes, etc. that you may need to carry any items that you purchase. Finally, I’m excited to share with everyone that we now have a new logo for Holy Virgin Martyrs! As part of the Renew My Church process, when mul ple parishes unite into a new parish, they not only receive a new name, but they also adopt a new logo to be used for all parish communica ons (bulle n, website, social media, sta onary, signs, etc.) The Communica ons Department of the Archdiocese offers their services to new parishes to help design their new logos. We provided input to them about our two parishes, and they incorporated that into a new design that I hope you will like. It is printed below. It is also posted now on our bulle n and website, and over the coming weeks and months we will be using it more and more in our parish communica ons. I’d like to explain the logo you see below. The color blue in the cross represents St. Beatrice Parish, as that was the color of St. Beatrice School. The color red in the crown represents St. Maria Gore Parish, as that was the color of St. Maria Gore School. The crown at the top represents the martyrs’ crown (the Church tradi onally talks about a “crown of martyrdom” for those who gave their lives for Christ). As both St. Beatrice and St. Maria Gore were martyrs, the crown represents each of them (and the red is also symbolic of the blood that they shed). The two lilies in the middle of the cross represent purity. Virgins in the Church are o en pictured with lilies. Both St. Beatrice and St. Maria Gore were virgins (which is also why we have two lilies in the logo, one for each of them). St. Beatrice and St. Maria Gore , our two Holy Virgin Martyrs, pray for us. May God bless you.

Fr. Rob

PAGE THREE The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

In today’s Gospel, even the child in Elizabeth’s womb leaps with joy at the approach of Mary, the “lowly servant,” who by accepting God’s plan for her became blessed for all generations. Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will bring love to your neighbors who have nothing.

FEAST OF FAITH The Shape of the Eucharistic Prayer

Our Eucharistic Prayers originated in the traditional Jewish meal prayers known as berakah, which were prayers of thanksgiving used at meals. Over the centuries, the Christian thanksgiving, or Eucharist, gradually took shape. While in the East the Eucharistic Prayers (called anaphora) took many forms, in the Roman Church there was for many centuries just one Eucharistic Prayer, called the Roman Canon (now known as Eucharistic Prayer I). Almost all Eucharistic Prayers include the same basic elements. They begin with thanksgiving and acclamation. Then there is an epiclesis, as the priest calls down the Holy Spirit upon the gifts. Then follows the institution narrative and consecration, as the words that Jesus spoke at the Last Supper are repeated. After the consecration, we remember in an explicit way all that Christ has done for us—this is the anamnesis, or remembering. The prayer concludes with the offering, the intercessions—prayers for the Church, our leaders, ourselves—and a final doxology of praise. The reforms of the Second Vatican Council enriched our liturgy with additional Eucharistic Prayers, including both ancient texts (Eucharistic Prayer II is based on the most ancient of all existing Eucharistic Prayers) and new compositions. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

THE DESTINY OF ALL MORTAL FLESH The celebration of today’s feast on a Sunday is unusual on our Roman Catholic calendar. Our observance of the Lord’s Day is held in such high esteem that few other feasts replace it. Occasionally there is a feast—usually of one of the saints—in which the saving power of God in Christ is so uniquely focused that the Roman rite deems it worthy of celebration on the Lord’s Day. Today is such a feast. Yet some are surprised at the brevity of the dogma in its entirety: “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” The Roman Catholic Church never defined any specifics or particulars about the event itself. It is not in the scriptures. There are no verifiable eyewitness accounts. At its core, the dogma reveals in Mary the destiny of all mortal flesh, and reinforces our creedal belief in resurrection of the body. This feast strengthens our faith, defined last week in Hebrews as the realization of things hoped for. We find, in Mary, that realization of what we all hope for, what Paul today affirms: “In Christ shall all be brought to life” (1 Corinthians 15:22). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is the process by which adults prepare to be received into full communion with the Catholic Church. The RCIA provides the opportunity to grow in the faith, supported by the community of Holy Virgin Martyrs Parish. You begin with a period of Inquiry followed by weekly Mass attendance, study of the faith, practices and doctrines of the Catholic Church, which leads to your initiation through either Baptism or a Profession of Faith, and the reception of Eucharist and Confirmation. If you are considering joining the Church, we would love to help you in your journey! Or, if you know of anyone who is considering joining, consider extending an invitation to them! Have questions, need additional information, not sure if you should participate? Contact the rectory at (847) 678-0138 or go to our parish website www.hvmparish.org and click on Religious Education and then click on Becoming Catholic and fill out and submit the form.
