Twenty-Fifth Sunday of

Ordinary Time (A) September 20, 2020

Reading I: Isaiah 55:6-9 Responsorial Psalm: 119:57,72,76-77,127-128,129-130 Reading II: Philippians 1:20c-24, 27a Gospel: Matthew 20:1-16a

Theme: “Am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?” (Gospel).

It starts with comparing yourself to others. What they have that you do not have will be a source of bitterness and envy. You feel small or unlucky or worse a victim of others’ fortunes. In this sense, life is unfair and there is resentment that lingers. In the gospel today, Jesus asks? “Are you envious because I am generous?’ Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

“God gives each one of us sufficient grace ever to know His holy will, and to do it fully” (St. Ignatius of Loyola). For as long as we live, there is a guarantee of grace enough to be grateful about. Gratitude is the cure to bitterness and resentment. In a competitive world, it is a temptation to get ahead at the expense of others. We forget about kindness, love, and generosity. As humans and Christians, love is the central tenet of our ethical, moral and spiritual life.

“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6). To correct ourselves and examine conscience, we need to ask whether we can accept the grace of God and share his grace to others. It means that we abandon the feelings of being victims and resentments. There is what St. Paul tells that we live according to the way of Christ. “Only, conduct yourselves in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ” (Phil. 1:27).

Do you want the Lord to give you many graces? Visit Him often. Do you want Him to give you few graces? Visit Him rarely. Do you want the devil to attack you? Visit Jesus rarely in the Blessed Sacrament. Do you want him to flee from you? Visit Jesus often. Do you want to conquer the devil? Take refuge often at the feet of Jesus. Do you want to be conquered by the devil? Forget about visiting Jesus. My dear ones, the Visit to the Blessed Sacrament is an extremely necessary way to conquer the devil. Therefore, go often to visit Jesus and the devil will not come out victorious against you. - St. John Bosco

Let us pray: Eternal Word, only begotten Son of God, teach me true generosity. Teach me to serve you as you deserve. To give without counting the cost, To fight heedless of wounds, to labor without seeking rest, to sacrifice myself without thought of any reward save the knowledge that I have done your will, Amen (St. Ignatius of Loyola).

Vigésimo Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario (A) 20 de septiembre de 2020

Lectura I: Isaías 55: 6-9 Salmo responsorial: 119: 57,72,76-77,127-128,129-130 Lectura II: Filipenses 1: 20c-24, 27a Evangelio: Mateo 20: 1-16a

Visítelo a menudo.

Pastoral Reflection By Martha Rodriguez, Co-Chair Pastoral Council

"So the last will be first, and first last, for many are called, but few are chosen" (Matt 20: 1-16). Jesus says that any "laborer" who accepts the invitation to the work in the vineyard, no matter how late in the day, will receive an equal reward with those who have been faithful the longest. What does it mean, after all whether we are first or whether last? Do not dwell too much upon it, for we all share the honor given to each other. God rewards us based upon the opportunities that he gives us. When we are baptized, we become members of the living body, and as we grow in grace, and get the true spirit that fills our body and mind. Let us all be a good steward to our mighty God. Amen!

Holy Name Church Attendance Procedures

We ask for Christian patience and understanding during these difficult and challenging times. It is imperative that each of us strictly abide by these procedures to prevent contamination and/or spread of the Covid-19 to one another.

For the safety of all, these procedures are mandatory and must be adhered to for Mass attendance. Anyone who cannot comply are asked to leave. Holy Name Catholic Church Procedures will follow the Archdiocese of San Antonio Guidelines for Mass Attendees and are as follows:

1. If you are feeling sick, we ask that you stay safe at home. We highly encourage those who are most vulnerable to continue to participate in mass via live stream or website (holynameusa.org).

2. Wash hands thoroughly before coming to the church.

3. Everyone must have their temperature taken before entering the church when applicable. Anyone with a fever will not be allowed entry. Anyone coughing or sneezing may not be allowed entry.

4. All must wear a face mask that covers both nose and mouth before entering the church and throughout the Mass. No exceptions except for infant children.

5. Bring hand sanitizer, your own missal or other mass aids to church.

6. Always maintain 6 feet between you and others not in your cohabitating family.

7. Follow the instructions of the ushers as you enter and leave the Church.

8. When guided by the ushers to receive communion, wear your mask receiving Communion, only removing it or lifting the mask up to consume Jesus away from the Priest or Deacon.

9. Seating will be on a first come first served basis for now, Mass capacity will be dependent on the number of attendees in each group, we can Safely seat. 10. Unfortunately, there will be no saving of seats. We ask that you ensure you enter with whomever you want to sit with. Once seated we cannot allow anyone to reposition because it will compromise the 6-foot separation distance.

11. After receiving Communion, we need everyone to maintain in their seats until the ushers direct your row towards the exits. We ask that you please be patient, as we are doing our best to maintain exiting in an orderly manner.

12. Finally, we ask that you be very patient with us, especially our volunteers who did not establish these procedures, but are only following them. They are giving of their time to help us conduct Mass, without volunteers this Mass would not happen. Thank you.

What is Catechetical Sunday? It is a day set aside “to highlight the min-istry and invite the entire church com-munity to think about our responsibility to share our faith with others.” usccb.org

Catechesis is the act of resounding or bringing the Church's teachings to the world. A catechist is one who teaches in the name of the Church.

The 2020 Catechetical Sunday theme is taken from St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, “I Received from the Lord what I also Handed on to You.” The theme focuses on the primary substance of catechesis, which is an invitation to a whole new life given by Christ Himself. It emphasizes that living faith necessitates movement, inspiring all those who hear the Word to share it as witnesses of the true and living God. Usccb.org “Parents are truly the primary catechists of their children. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of faith. On Catechetical Sunday, we not only highlight the work of catechists in parishes and schools, but we also commend parents and guardians and encourage them to take seriously their role of making their Catholic households a place where faith is passed on to the next generation. This is why the rite of blessing of catechists used on Catechetical Sunday includes an optional blessing of parents and guardians.” usccb.org The domestic church has been called to become stronger and more visible this year then ever. We had to bring the church into our homes and participate in the Mass within our homes. Our Religious Education program looks different this year. This year parents will bring the curriculum to the home as well. We have 80 families registered for Religious Education this year, that’s over 100 children.

We, the Religious Education staff and volunteers, are here to support you, the parents, and cheer you on!

A Prayer for Catechists

Loving Father, we pray today for our catechists. We thank you for their gift of ministry in

your Church. Grant them your wisdom that they may grow in the understanding and

teaching of your Word. Grant them also your love that they may be fruitful heralds of

your Word and lead others to love you. Pour forth your Holy Spirit upon them to grant

them wisdom about what is important; knowledge of the truths of faith; understanding of

their meaning; right judgement about how to apply them in life; courage to persevere

even in the face of adversity; reverence before all that is sacred and holy;

and that loving zeal which leads others to a transforming encounter with your Son.

We pray this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

About the 2020 United States Census

The U.S. Constitution mandates a census of the population

every 10 years. The 2020 Census counts everyone who lives

in the U.S. on April 1, 2020. Census statistics help

determine the number of seats each state holds in the U.S.

House of Representatives and how billions of dollars in

federal funds will be allocated by state, local, and federal

lawmakers every year for the next 10 years.
