Dear Holy Family Parishioners,
This has been a weird year. In February, I started working for
OPV Catholic as the youth minister and DRE for middle
school. Just as I was starting to figure things out, we were
instructed to quarantine. Adapting religious education and
youth ministry to the virtual realm was immensely stressful.
I prefer physical interaction over virtual any day. I am now
working through a backlog of Baptisms, First Communions,
and Confirmations and I am struggling to relearn virtually
many of the things I was starting to pick up back in the
Spring. It’s been a stressful time. And my 11-month old
daughter isn’t sleeping. So add exhaustion to the stress. I
would have had a nervous breakdown by now if it wasn’t for
our Mother Mary. When I get in the car and forget which
church I am supposed to be at, I pray a Hail Mary. When my
daughter is awake for two hours at night, I pray the Rosary.
Mary helps me through my stress and exhaustion.
This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption
of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This feast day is held in
recognition of Mary’s transition, body and soul, into heaven.
The belief of Mary’s Assumption has been held by Catholics
for more than a millennium. The Church Fathers recognized
Mary’s Assumption in chapter twelve of Revelation: “a
woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet,
and on her head a crown of twelve stars.” We hear from this
passage is in the first reading.
In the gospel this weekend, we hear about Mary’s visit to her
cousin, Elizabeth. Luke tells us that, upon hearing Mary’s
greeting, Elizabeth was “filled with the Holy Spirit” and
proclaimed that Mary was the mother of the Lord. The Holy
Spirit enabled Elizabeth to realize the truth and to speak it.
This week, 114 of last year’s eighth grade students will finally
be confirmed. After a three month delay, they too will be
“filled with the Holy Spirit” and receive the strength to live as
disciples of Christ. I am so proud and excited for our students
as they receive God’s grace!
To our confirmation students: I know this has been a difficult
time. You’ve missed out on graduation parties, vacations,
sporting events. You might not be able to visit with friends.
You’re about to transition into high school. It’s all stressful.
But you are not alone. When my baby isn’t sleeping at night,
I beg God to let her sleep, but I also ask for Mary’s
intercession because God never had a sleepless baby. As a
mother, Mary can empathize with me. Mary knows. This is
why you picked confirmation saints; because they’ve
struggled and you can ask for their help. Talk to them, and
don’t forget that your mother Mary is here for you too.
The first week of August, Steph and I sent out CCD
registration over Flocknote. The Fall CCD program will look
very different this year as we switch to a virtual-only program.
We hope that in January 2021 we will be able to return CCD
to the classroom. In the meantime, because it’s important to
build a sense of community in the physical world, each month
all Holy Family Parish students (CCD families and Catholic
School families) will have the opportunity to attend a grade-
based Mass. Each month will feature a different class grade.
For example, we will start with 6th graders in October. These
Masses will be for students and families to worship together
(while following social distancing guidelines). The students
will be invited to serve as lectors, ushers, and altar servers,
or just be present. After the student Masses, we will offer
group activities (such as crafts or skits).
It’s going to be a weird year, but it doesn’t have to be a
terrible year. When you’re stressed and exhausted
remember to turn to Mary and the saints.
In peace,
Meredith

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE 20TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
READING I IS 56:1, 6-7
Thus says the LORD: Observe what is right, do what is just;
for my salvation is about to come, my justice, about to be
revealed. The foreigners who join themselves to the LORD,
ministering to him, loving the name of the LORD, and
becoming his servants—all who keep the sabbath free from
profanation and hold to my covenant, them I will bring to my
holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer; their
burnt offerings and sacrifices will be acceptable on my altar,
for my house shall be calleda house of prayer for all peoples.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 67:2-3, 5,6,8
R. O God, let all the nations praise you!
May God have pity on us and bless us; may he let his face shine
upon us. So may your way be known upon earth; among all
nations, your salvation.
R. O God, let all the nations praise you!
May the nations be glad and exult because you rule the peoples
in equity; the nations on the earth you guide.
R. O God, let all the nations praise you!
May the peoples praise you, O God; may all the peoples praise
you! May God bless us, and may all the ends of the earth fear
him!
R. O God, let all the nations praise you!

READING 2 ROM 11:13-15, 29-32

Brothers and sisters: I am speaking to you Gentiles.
Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles,
I glory in my ministry in order to make my race jealous
and thus save some of them. For if their rejection is the
reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but
life from the dead? For the gifts and the call of God are
irrevocable. Just as you once disobeyed Godbut have now
received mercy because of their disobedience, so they have
now disobeyed in order that, by virtue of the mercy shown to
you, they too may now receive mercy. For God delivered all
to disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Jesus proclaimed the Gospel of the kingdom and cured every
disease among the people.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
GOSPEL ROM 11:13-15, 29-32
At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called
out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is
tormented by a demon.”
But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her. Jesus’ disciples
came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out
after us.” He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of
the house of Israel.” But the woman came and did Jesus
homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” He said in reply, “It is not right
to take the food of the childrenand throw it to the dogs.” She
said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall
from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply,
“O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you
wish.” And the woman’s daughter was healed from that hour.
LAS VIRTUDES TEOLOGALES (tercera parte).
Fe, esperanza y caridad. Fueron infundidas por Dios en nuestra
alma el día del bautismo.
IV.
b) Hace eficaces nuestras peticiones.
rios.
b) Desaliento y desesperación: harta tentados y a veces venci-
za. CONTINUARÁ

Holy Family Parish Angel Fund Established to Assist
Holy Family Catholic School Families—DONATE BELOW
Both former St. John the Baptist and St. Joseph Parishes held Angel Funds, which helped with families
in need to afford tuition at the parish school. At St. John it was called the Father Bartley Angel Fund. At
St. Joseph, there was no name attached. Both Schools have merged this year, and the parishes have
merged also. Therefore, the Angel Funds have merged also and will be used to help support families in
need at the merged Holy Family School. Even though the schools are now part of the PERCES
(Pittsburgh East Regional Catholic Elementary Schools), this fund will remain a parish fund. Any
bequests or remembrances for the Angel Funds to help support a Catholic Education at Holy Family
School can be sent to Holy Family Angel Fund at the parish office. Please consider making a donation
today so we can help as many families as possible , especially through these difficult financial times.
Thank You!
