25th Sunday in Ordinary Time A-2017 My brothers and sisters in the Lord! Today we welcome Cardinal Tobin to celebrate with us our annual parish Festival in honor of Maria SS Addolorata. It is truly an honor to have the Cardinal here to join in our festivities. We are truly grateful that he has taken time from his busy schedule to experience our great hospitality, wonderful homemade food and great entertainment. Let us keep Cardinal Tobin in our continued prayers as he leads our great Archdiocese and faces the many challenges and joys which his ministry brings to him. We, the priests of Holy Family, are truly grateful to Gina Tamburri and her faithful team of volunteers for their hard work and efforts in making this annual festival honoring Our Lady of Sorrows the great success it always is and continues to be. They have truly worked hard these past days preparing the homemade food and desserts as well as overseeing the setting up of tents and games of chance. Thank you, also, to the Società Oriundi Castellani for their presence and generosity in honoring Our Lady under the title of Maria SS. Addolorata. God Bless all of you! Just before the Gospel we heard today, Jesus tells Peter, in response to the encounter with the rich young man, that “The first will be last and the last shall be first.” Peter has asked the question, “What about us, we have left everything and followed you.” In the parable of the workers in the vineyard, Jesus attempts to drive home the message that all will be treated equally by God. Jesus gives an unflinching teaching on the generosity of God, whose ways are not our ways. In the parable, the men who have been employed for the day line up to receive their wages. One would expect that those who had worked longer hours would receive more than those who had worked lesser hours. This seems to be a fair way of doing business. However, this is not the case. The landowner, representing God, gives the same to the last as he did to the first, and stresses that those employed at the beginning of the day have no reason to be envious of those who worked less hours. After all, their payment had been agreed upon. This surely is justice. An agreement has been made and the landowner is then entitled to do what he sees fit with anyone else. Scholars tell us that one denarius would have been sufficient to feed a large peasant family for one day. The landowner, from the start, has been good to the workers he hires from the beginning of the day. To those hired later, he says he will give a fair wage. They do not know what they will receive but the land owner is true to his word and gives them plenty. The message here is that God will look after all of us in the same way. We will all be provided for generously. Reflecting on this parable today, it is easy to imagine anger being sparked in the minds of those employed at the beginning of the day; scrunched up fists, furrowed brows, the stomping of feet in frustration, next might be the fire coming out of the top of their heads. The word envious in the bible is translated from a word that means to give an evil look of resentment toward another. That is a strong emotional reaction, “simmering anger.” There are times in life when we will all meet situations where there seems to have been an injustice and our reaction might be the same. We have to be clear, however, there is no injustice in today’s parable. An agreement had been made. It just demonstrates that God is entitled to reveal God’s merciful face whenever and wherever God wishes. In parishes and other church communities, we all have different experiences of coming to or deepening in faith. Sometimes it may be that a new member of the Christian community is suddenly getting involved in lots of different ministries. The whispering begins: “Who does he or she think they are? They are only here five minutes.” This is dangerous territory. A misplaced sense of injustice turns to idle gossip and, as Pope Francis said, “destroys with the tongue, with idle chatter that divides…” Today we are invited to reflect on how God chooses to reveal mercy and love according to His own plan. God’s love is free and offered to all. We all come to know this at different times. A heart open to this beautiful truth will surely rejoice in both early and latecomers. Peace, Fr. Joe

AN INVITATION TO DISCOVER THE ANSWERS TO THESE AND OTHER QUESTIONS... Do you want to deepen your faith? Do you really believe that God loves you as you are?

Do you want to be able to forgive? COME AND LISTEN! HAVE AN ENCOUNTER WITH CHRIST!

What is the Neo-Catechumenal Way? Thank you to Fr. Joe for giving me the opportunity to write about the Neo-Catechumenal Way. I have been part of this experience

since 1995 and it has been the most forming, rewarding and faith-building experience of my life. The Neo-Catechumenal Way is one of the fruits of the Second Vatican Council, aiming to foster a spiritual and liturgical renewal within our parish community. As Pope John Paul II stated, “I recognize the Neo-Catechumenal-Way as an itinerary of Catholic formation valid for our society and our times.” Pope John Paul II, Ogniqualvolta, August 30, 1990.

In the primitive church, no one could be baptized without going through a Catechumenate. But beginning with the time of Christendom, in the Constantine Age (5th century and forward) since the Church opened the door to the masses of people, it was more difficult to instruct the people into the faith. Thus, the transmission of the faith was assumed and delegated to the family. In modern times, we can no longer presume that the family, faced with the challenges of modern culture, will be able to form their children in faith, thus, the need for a Baptismal Neo-Catechumenate, which will help us to rediscover the richness of our Baptism. Pope Paul VI stated, “The ‘before’ or ‘after’ the Baptism (of the Catechumenate) is secondary. I would say the fact is that you aim at the authenticity, fullness, coherence, and the sincerity of Christian life.” (Pope Paul VI audience 8/5/74)

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE “So the last will be first and the first last” - MATTHEW 20:16 You’ve heard the saying “it’s not where you start, but how you finish.” This certainly applies to this Bible passage. Our gratitude and generosity helps us live “God-centered” lives and not “self-centered” lives.

AN INVITATION , continued from page 2... And aren’t we all aware of the need for an adult faith

formation in our life? When we stop to think of the reason of our believing, or when someone asks us why we practice our faith and why we believe what we believe, we find it difficult to give reason for our faith. Even more so, when we are hit by events that are difficult to understand (tragic events, death, sickness, the abandonment by one who is dear to us, all that we call the crosses in our life), we become puzzled about our faith and some even stray from their belief. The Neo-Catechumenal Way aims to build up in us such a deep relationship of faith with the Lord which will allow us to be confident in His Fatherhood for us, no matter what. It is an experience of eternal life already here on earth. It is important for each one to discover that God is our Father who provides for all our needs and always decides what is best for us. It is also important for us to discover that the Church is our Mother, who always feeds us with the best of the food, that being the Word of God and the bread from the Eucharist and accompanies us through our life journey. The question may arise but I have faith. Why do I need to begin an itinerary of faith? Indeed, the presence of a Christian community aims at giving the sign of faith to those who do not have faith, namely the “far away” or to those who have lost their faith, “the fallen Catholics.” In our modern, secularized society, it is very difficult to be a Christian witness; therefore we need a stronger faith to face the current challenges.

All you need to do is to come and listen and/or invite those who have distanced themselves from the Lord and might benefit from this experience.
