Halo Masyarakat Keluarga Holy Family, On August 2nd we will be sending information to Catholic Education Melbourne about students who have a disability according to the Disability Standards. A disability may present itself in many ways. For example, a disability includes: students who have difficulties understanding language for reasons other than being a speaker of another language, students experiencing emotional difficulties such as anxiety, health issues, or even a student who may have broken both arms. Disabilities as defined by the Standards can be for a long or short period of time. The important part of this definition is that we provide adjustments, that is - changes or modifications – to part or all of a student’s learning (both academic, physical and/or social/ emotional). Adjustments may include using different resources for student learning, modifying the curriculum so to support their understanding and growth, additional time to complete tasks, more 1:1 assistance or changing the environment so they can access learning spaces and the playground. Some students at our school have adjustments made to support their learning but may not have a disability. Sometimes students require additional support at particular times during their school life. Many parents have attended Program Support Group meetings over the years where learning and/or social and emotional goals are set. We do not require these meetings for every child we make adjustments for but we do need to consult with parents when we are providing extra support beyond our normal practice. Over the next couple of weeks, you may receive an invitation to speak with your child’s teacher’s in person, or a letter may be sent home. Alternatively, your child’s teacher/s may speak with you about adjustments during Parent/Teacher interviews. If this process is unfamiliar to you and you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to speak with your child’s teacher, Ms Drossaert (our learning diversity leader) or myself.
