The First Reading Amos 7:7-15
Reader A reading from the book of Amos.
This is what the Lord GOD showed me: the LORD was
standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb
line in his hand. And the Lord said to me, “Amos, what do
you see?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said,
“See, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my
people Israel; I will never again pass them by;
the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate,
and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste,
and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with
the sword.”
Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent to King Jeroboam of
Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the very
centre of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his
words. For thus Amos has said,
'Jeroboam shall die by the sword,
and Israel must go into exile
away from his land.' "
And Amaziah said to Amos, "O seer, go, flee away to the land
of Judah, earn your bread there, and prophesy there; but never
again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it
is a temple of the kingdom."
Then Amos answered Amaziah, "I am no prophet, nor a
prophet’s son; but I am a herdsman, and a dresser of
sycomore trees, and the LORD took me from following the
2
flock, and the LORD said to me, 'Go, prophesy to my people
Israel.'”

Psalm 85:8-13 (read responsively by full verse)
8 I will listen to what the LORD God is saying, *
for he is speaking peace to his faithful people
and to those who turn their hearts to him.
9 Truly, his salvation is very near to those who fear him,
*
that his glory may dwell in our land.
10 Mercy and truth have met together; *
righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
11 Truth shall spring up from the earth, *
and righteousness shall look down from heaven.
12 The LORD will indeed grant prosperity, *
and our land will yield its increase.
13 Righteousness shall go before him, *
and peace shall be a pathway for his feet.

The Second Reading Ephesians 1:3-14
Reader A reading from Paul’s letter to the Church in
Ephesus.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has
blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly
places, just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the
world to be holy and blameless before him in love. He destined us
for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the
good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he
freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption
through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to
the riches of his grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and
insight he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according
to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the
fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven
and things on earth. In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance,
having been destined according to the purpose of him who
accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that
we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the
2
praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word
of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him,
were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the
pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God's own people,
to the praise of his glory.

The Gospel Mark 6:14-29
Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according
to Mark.
People Glory to you, Lord Christ.
King Herod heard of Jesus and his disciples, for Jesus’ name
had become known. Some were saying, “John the baptizer has
been raised from the dead; and for this reason these powers
are at work in him.” But others said, “It is Elijah.” And others
said, “It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” But
when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has
been raised.”
For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound
him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother
Philip’s wife, because Herod had married her. For John had
been telling Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your
brother’s wife.” And Herodias had a grudge against him, and
wanted to kill him. But she could not, for Herod feared John,
knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he
protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed;
and yet he liked to listen to him. But an opportunity came
when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers
and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. When his daughter
Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his
guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever
2
you wish, and I will give it.” And he solemnly swore to her,
“Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my
kingdom.” She went out and said to her mother, “What should
I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the baptizer.”
Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, “I
want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a
platter.” The king was deeply grieved; yet out of regard for
his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her.
Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to
bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison,
brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the
girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard about it,
they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb.

The Sermon The Rev. Bob Brown
The Nicene Creed BCP 358
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
2
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
2
Prayers of the People BCP 387
Deacon or Priest says
Let us pray for the Church and for the world.
Intercessor continues
Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your Name may be
united in your truth, live together in your love, and reveal your
glory in the world.
We remember this Sunday in the Anglican cycle of prayer
the Episcopal Church in the Philippines.
We give thanks for our sister faith communities in the River
Valley, especially the Delaware Assembly of God and the Grace
Fellowship Church.
Silence
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer.
2
Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of
justice and peace; that we may honor one another and serve the
common good.
Silence
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer.
Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we
may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your
honor and glory.
Silence
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer.
Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that
we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us.
We pray for those who have birthdays this week, especially
Elizabeth Franks, Mercedes Mos, and Linda Reid.
We pray for those who are celebrating anniversaries this week,
especially Beth & Paul Gray.
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer.
Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give
them courage and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of
your salvation.
We pray especially for Miguel, Jon & Pam, Tony, Jeannie, Jarrod,
Sarah, Melissa; for all who have contracted the Covid-19 virus,
and those who have lost loved ones in the pandemic.
2
We pray for those expecting a child, especially Htee Hsee & Po Tu
Tu, Beth McGregor & Michael Jacobides, and Thaw & Blut Soe.
We pray also for those serving in the military, especially Brian,
Sarah, Cameron, Cody, and Adam.
Silence
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer.
We commend to your mercy all who have died, especially those
who have died from the novel coronavirus or racial violence, that
your will for them may be fulfilled; and we pray that we may share
with all your saints in your eternal kingdom.
Silence
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer.
The Celebrant adds this concluding Collect.
Almighty and eternal God, ruler of all things in heaven and
earth: Mercifully accept the prayers of your people, and
strengthen us to do your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Confession of Sin BCP 360
The Deacon or Celebrant says
Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Silence may be kept.
Minister and People
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
2
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.
The Bishop, when present, or the Priest, stands and says
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins
through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and
by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.
The Peace (all standing)
Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you.
People And also with you.
2
The Ministers and People greet one another in the name of the
Lord.
Greeting and Announcements
The Liturgy of the Table
The Offertory Anthem Dodie Lamb-Roberts
“Great is Your Faithfulness” by Martin Smith and Matt Redman
The Great Thanksgiving, Prayer C
The people stand. The Celebrant, whether bishop or priest, faces
them and sings or says
The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Celebrant Lift up your hearts.
People We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People It is right to give him thanks and praise.
Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds
God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory
and praise.
Glory to you for ever and ever.
At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse
interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and
2
this fragile earth, our island home.
By your will they were created and have their being.
From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and
blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers
of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust;
and we turned against one another.
Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.
Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and
sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time
you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to
open for us the way of freedom and peace.
By his blood, he reconciled us.
By his wounds, we are healed.
And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus,
with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every
generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them
your glory, in their unending hymn:
Celebrant and People
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory,
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the Highest.
The people stand or kneel.
Then the Celebrant continues
And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a
new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these
gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood
of Jesus Christ our Lord.
On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing,
broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, "Take, eat:
2
This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the
remembrance of me."
After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said,
"Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."
Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you
this sacrifice of thanksgiving,
We celebrate his death and resurrection,
as we await the day of his coming.
Lord God of our Fathers: God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God
and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your
hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the
presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for
strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this
Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we
may worthily serve the world in his name.
Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.
Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our
great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your
Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to
generation. AMEN.
And now, as our Savior
Christ has taught us,
we are bold to say,
People and Celebrant
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
2
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
The Communion
The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread.
A period of silence is kept.
Then is said
Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.
2
Facing the people, the Celebrant says the following Invitation
The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in
remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your
hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
Wherever you are in your journey of faith,
you are welcome in this place; you are welcome at Christ’s table.
Communion Hymn Hymnal 686 “Come thou fount of every blessing”
2
After Communion, the Celebrant says
Let us pray.
Celebrant and People BCP 365
Eternal God, heavenly Father,
you have graciously accepted us as living members
of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ,
and you have fed us with spiritual food
in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood.
Send us now into the world in peace,
and grant us strength and courage
to love and serve you
with gladness and singleness of heart;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
2
The Blessing
The Bishop when present, or the Priest, gives the blessing
The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your
hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son
Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the
Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain
with you always. Amen.
The Recessional Hymn 495
“Hail thou once despised Jesus”
2
The Prayer Attributed to St. Francis
Celebrant and People
Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is
hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where
there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where
there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where
there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to
be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is
in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we
are born to eternal life. Amen.
The Dismissal
2
The Deacon, or the Celebrant dismisses the people with these or
similar words
Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
People Thanks be to God.
