Children in Catholic schools flourish because of these practices, which direct the mind and heart of each child toward the goal of the day: to love God and each other and put selfish considerations last.... in every class, not just religion class ! Christian ideals are woven into the curricu-lum. Whether science or social studies, the teachers refer back to the main project: forming excellent men and wom-en ! loyal, unselfish, full of kindness, incapable of treach-ery or dishonesty, gracious and loving to everyone.

John 6:9, 11!
Prayer, in the sense of union with God, is the most crucify-ing thing there is. One must do it for God's sake; but one will not get any satisfaction out of it, in the sense of feeling "I am good at prayer", "I have an infallible method". That would be disastrous, since what we want to learn is pre-cisely our own weakness, powerlessness, unworthiness. Nor ought one to expect a "sense of the supernatural" ... And one should wish for no prayer, except precisely the prayer that God gives us probably very distracted and unsatisfactory in every way! !
On the other hand, the only way to pray is to pray; and the way to pray well is to pray much. If one has no time for this, then one must at least pray regularly. But the less one prays, the worse it goes. And if circumstances do not per-mit even regularity, then one must put up with the fact that when one does try to pray, one can't pray and our prayer will probably consist of telling this to God ... The rule is simply: pray as you can, and do not try to pray as you can't. !Abbot John Chapman !(1865!1933) In Treasury of the Catholic Church !compiled by Teresa de Bertodano (Darton, Longman and Todd, 1999)
Even if I write these words with my hands in chains, I still find that much better than if my will were in chains. Neither prison, nor chains, nor sentence of death, can separate me from the love of God, can rob a man of his faith and his free will.!Obviously, God gives so much strength to those who love him and who do not give priority to the world rather than to eternity. The power of God cannot be overcome. !Blessed Franz Jagerstatter !(1907!43)
Grant me, O Lord, to see everything now with new eyes, to discern and test the spirits that help me read the signs of the times, to relish the things that are yours, and to com-municate them to others. Give me the clarity of understand-ing that you gave Ignatius. !Pedro Arrupe SJ !(1907!1991)

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – JULY 29, 2018
FROM M SGR . LAROCQUE ’S DESK SEASONAL THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS
Four friends climbed a hill in Orkney, the islands off the northeastern tip of Scotland, to see the sunset. They were too late. The sun had just gone under the horizon. Memories of the experience were captured by one of the friends when he wrote down his thoughts soon after the event:!
“In the lingering twilight of midAugust, everything around us had an evanescent beauty… All behind us was the ‘vacant winered moor’… Across the undulating moorland rolled the sounds of the western sea a long low sonorous croon that reminds men of the vastness of eternity. And we saw a kestrel in the gathering darkness, cutting a superb graph of flight against hill and sky the long downward glide on level wings, the sudden fluttering rise, the incredible hover, pivoted motion-less in space and then that downward glide again, till we lost him in the hollows. We climbed down into the silent town, all four of us, and thought that, from the point of view of worship, it was almost as good as having been in church.”!
The words were written in 1951 by George Mackay Brown, poet, novelist, playwright and shortstory writer, who was born and lived in Orkney for most of his life until his death in 1996. They are taken from his essay “From Brinkie’s Brae”, one of many he wrote celebrating the life and history of Orkney, pub-lished in a collection of his prose and poetry entitled Northern Lights. !
To gaze upon the grandeur of the hills and mountains at sunset or when the sun has gone down, to see them at dawn, or to look in awe at the mountain peaks encircled by mist, is to catch a glimpse of the mystery of God. No wonder that Mac-kay Brown, a man of deep Christian faith, compared his time on the hill with worship in church, or that in another essay he quoted from the poet William Wordsworth’s description of a mountain as “part of God’s vision”.!
The Gospel takes us to another hillside, this time by the Sea of Galilee. Among the great crowd who have followed Jesus to this place is a small boy with five barley loaves and two fish. We do not even know his name, yet the little boy represents all those to whom Jesus has been sent to give the Good News, for in giving loaves to Jesus he is offering him barley, the food of those who are poor. From this small amount of food Jesus provides for the needs of as many as five thou-sand. There is even food left over. This wondrous event brings to mind the first reading and Elisha’s multiplication of barley loaves. At a still deeper level it looks back to Mount Sinai and the covenant God made through Moses and forward to the new covenant Christ will make at the Last Supper before his journey to the Mount of Olives and his death on the hill of Gol-gotha.!
The multiplication of the loaves and fishes stirs a belief in the people that Jesus is the prophet foretold by Moses and a gen-eral desire to make him their king. But their enthusiasm is born of an earthly vision. They have not recognized the spiritual meaning of what he has done. His kingdom is not of this world and he withdraws into the solitude of the hills.!
