Dear HERC Friends,

We are saddened at the death of Elie

Wiesel. He was an inspiration to millions.

His recent death is a loss for mankind. I

remember when Joan Fowinkle, a teacher

at Lincoln High School, shared her student

projects as a lesson with the book Night.

After I encouraged her to send the most

creative one to Elie Wiesel, she received a

beautiful letter that she shared. Everyone

can read it in this newsletter. After the

Survivors are gone, who will tell their

stories?

On the day after the Orlando shooting,

teachers from as far as Ocala, Winter Park,

Madison and Tallahassee gathered to learn

about the impact of Holocaust education.

The two day Regional Holocaust

Education Conference started relating

current events of today to history of hate.

The participants reiterated their

commitment to helping their students

create a better world by looking at their

Universe of Obligation.

A big thank you goes to Lynda Kinard and the

Education Committee for helping organize the

days with resources materials and providing lunch.

Many guests form the community attended and

learned more than they imagined. Tiffanie Webster

said, "Thanks again for the opportunity to attend

the conference and be involved in HERC's

outstanding educational outreach for teachers and

guests. These two days were a highlight in my

summer. I know that I was genuinely inspired to

think more deeply about my universe of obligation

and consider ways I can better love my neighbor."

Let us not forget - time is running out. It is our

moral and practical responsibility to support

Holocaust education and remembrance. Please join

Message from John Rosner, HERC President

As President of HERC,  I have  the great pleasure of bringing you all my  first message of greetings. This month we had substantial success, along with Leon County Schools and the FSU Holocaust Institute, in presenting to teachers the 2016 Regional Holocaust Education Conference. As a first time participant, I was totally amazed by the  smoothly  running  program.  Presented  by  Dr.  Mary  Johnson,  the  dynamic facilitator from Facing History and Ourselves, the conference ran for two days at the FSU Turnbull Center. Additionally, Steve Friedlander, a participating teacher shared his father's, a Holocaust survivor story, Barbara Goldstein related her trip to Shanghai to view where her mother had  lived during the war, and Hannie Both, a Holocaust survivor, spoke to the enraptured audience regarding her experiences during the war.

The  teachers were  absolutely  focused  in  the  proceedings  for  the  full  time.

Needless to say, the entire event was truly a wonderful educational opportunity. Oh yes, and the breakfasts and lunches provided were great! Many thanks to the board members  and  other  volunteers,  for  their  help  in  setting  up  the  occurrence  and helping to smoothly run it.

I  look  forward  to other such wonderful experiences and strongly encourage

you all to participate.                Sincerely,

John Rosner HERC President

The Holocaust Educational Resource Council in partnership with Florida State University Holocaust Institute and Leon County School District sponsored a Regional Holocaust Education Conference on June 13-14, 2016. Dr. Mary Johnson, senior historian of the educational and professional development organization Facing History and Ourselves, was the facilitator. Topics covered ranged from "How Hitler Came to Power", "Nazi Germany Phase I of Holocaust", "Universe of Obligation" to "Culture and Reflection" which included a presentation by Hannie Both, a Holocaust Survivor who grew up in Holland. She recalled how her grandmother was taken to Auschwitz and never seen again.

It is a State of Florida mandate that history of the Holocaust (1933-1945), the systematic,

planned annihilation of European Jews and other groups by Nazi Germany, a watershed event in the history of humanity, is to be taught in a manner that leads to an investigation of human behavior, an understanding of the ramifications of prejudice, racism, and stereotyping, and an examination of what it means to be a responsible and respectful person, for the purposes of encouraging tolerance of diversity in a pluralistic society and for nurturing and protecting democratic values and institutions.

Sandie Hanna, a US History Teacher from Chiles High School commented, "This was my first

HERC workshop even though I'd heard teachers rave about it for years. It's considered one of the premier in-service experiences in the district and now I know why. I expected great program content, relevant lesson plans, and useful teaching materials. All those expectations were met but what truly impressed me was how masterfully the historical lessons of the Holocaust were interpreted on a human level and then used to illuminate the ethical and political conflicts of our day. A wonderful experience!"

Dr. Mary Johnson has been with Facing History and Ourselves for over 30 years. Their training

philosophy focuses on integrating the study of history, literature, and human behavior with ethical decision making and innovative teaching strategies. The program enables school teachers to promote students' historical understanding, critical thinking, and social-emotional learning. They feel that as students explore the complexities of history, and make connections to current events, they reflect on the choices they confront today and consider how they can make a difference in todays' world.

During this conference, the attendees learned invaluable information that will be useful to

further students' knowledge as well as the community's knowledge of the background of the Holocaust. Invaluable books and references were provided to the attendees; these items will be of significant value as they can be incorporated into lesson plans in the future. Gabriela Mackee, teacher from Montford Middle School said, "Dr. Johnson shared her vast knowledge in a manner that inspired the attendees. Through her lively and personable teaching style, the conference was invigorating for all and a great success!"

The Holocaust Education Resource Council offers professional learning opportunities for

teachers annually. Other activities include providing tool kits with resources materials, monthly book club open to the community, a film series, and guest lecturers.

HERC Spotlight – John Rosner, HERC President

1. What work do you do outside of HERC?

I am gainfully retired.

2. When did you first get involved with HERC?

Some years ago I became a member and attended the great HERC dinners as

well. I first actively became involved in December, 2015.

3. What do you think is the most important aspect of HERC's mission?

Certainly the education of students is important. Their experience with Holocaust

issues appropriate to their age is absolutely critical. Therefore, the education of

their teachers is likewise critical. Every year is another mission and challenges to

educate the teachers so they can pass on this important information to their

students. It will help to ensure that this event never occurs again.

4. What are some of your passions and hobbies?

I stay in physical shape by going to the gym almost every day. Also I enjoy

reading and hanging out with my wife.

5. Why is HERC's mission so important to you personally?

As the son of Holocaust survivors, I see a side of life that most people don't

comprehend. It haunts me on a daily basis. I believe that it is imperative for our

students to learn about those inconceivable past events so the world will never

repeat such a horrific crime. Wouldn't it be great if everyone on this planet was

concerned with improving life rather than killing and torturing others?

6. How do you hope to see HERC and Holocaust Education grow at large?

All that I can say is that Barbara and Rita have done a remarkably marvelous job

so far. Hopefully we can to continue to provide the proper educational

coursework, along with the Leon County local school board and FSU, to our

public school teachers as well as to provide educational films to the public. It is

imperative to never forget.
