“The programs with the missions that we’re involved with, are there to give them a hand up, not just a hand out,” Miller said. “And the ultimate goal is to bring them to the saving knowl-edge of Jesus Christ.
“There are times for handouts, after a hurri-cane or whatever, “ Miller continued. “We are geared toward teaching them how to become self-sustaining through agriculture pro-grams. They take water out of the river and use it to raise crops. Where there’s a water well, there’s people.
“With the funds from these auctions, people are receiving the benefits of clean water,” he added. “Clean water leads to less disease and sickness. They also receive clinical care through the various clinics. And, through all of this, they are exposed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It’s all positive.”
The Haiti Benefit Auction is a cooperative effort of many of churches and indi-viduals to bring relief to the people of Haiti, which is the most populous full member-state of the Caribbean Com-munity. It is the poorest country in the Americas as per the Human Develop-ment Index. Political vio-lence has occurred regularly throughout its history, lead-ing to government instability.
Ever since the slave revolt on the island of Hispaniola in the late 1700s into the 1800s, the infrastructure of
the island was ruined, and it has been in recovery mode ever since, according to Miller.
“I like to talk about what good is happening there,” Miller said. “If they don’t have a storm there every two years, their water table drops. That’s what has hap-pened, some of the wells there have gone dry. The need is ongoing.”
The country of Haiti is about the size of the state of Maryland, with about 900 people per square mile, as opposed to 70 per square mile in the U.S. There are approximately seven doc-tors for every 100,000 people in Haiti.
“Here, our biggest concern is what are we going to do with all the leftovers from a meal,” Miller said. “In coun-tries like Haiti, they wonder if there is even going to be a meal. We have been so blessed here, but sometimes it is hard for us to relate to the needs of Haiti.”
“This auction is one of the bigger ones, and we just serve as the conduit to get these resources to the people of Haiti,” committee treasurer Lael Miller said.
“It is the generous giv-ing of so many people that makes this event happen,” Nelson Miller added.
If you would like to donate items for the auc-tion, or give of your time by helping at the auction, call for more information: 330-204-6089 or 330-231-0461 or go online at: www.ohiohai-tiauction.com.

Once-a-year gala event since 1942
In almost all of Ohio’s 88 counties, an annual county fair is held, and fairs have been going on for many years. Fairs were, and still are, major celebra-tions, bringing nuggets of knowledge, friendly com-petition, entertainment and a sense of community to town in a once a year gala event.
County fairs reflect the ever-changing agricultural industry, bringing state-of-the-art technology to farmers through lectures, exhibitions and show-ring competitions. Much of the success of early fairs reflects the emphasis of providing something for the entire family. Over the history of fairs, people have steadily moved away from farms and into fac-tory and office jobs. Fairs reflect this change.
Today’s county fairs are agriculture and much more. While striving to hold on to their agricul-tural roots they also work to reflect the changing atmosphere among youth and adults. Fairs are still used as a venue for farm families to showcase their finest, but also are full of nontraditional exhibits.
In the United States fairs draw in as many as 150 million people each sum-mer. Children’s competi-tions range from breeding small animals to robotics, while the organization 4-H has become a tradi-tional association.
To many visitors of the Holmes County Fair, com-ing to the fair is a tradi-tion, where folks gather to meet with friends and watch the kids.
“We’ve been coming to the fair ever since it’s been here, 1942. We come every year to watch the kids, who are all in 4-H,” said Paul Baker of Kill-buck.
“We like to visit with people, and see friends we haven’t seen in a while,” Paul’s wife, Lura, said. “It’s a nice social get-together.”
“And we have to get some funnel cakes,” Paul added.
Richard Lance of Orrville says he’s been coming to the Holmes County Fair for 40 years, at least.
“I like to come down and look around and see the equipment,” he said. “But mostly, I like to come for the tractor pull.”

Basking in misdirected spotlight of doppelgangerWhile it might not be
easy for men in tight spandex to fit into a crowd in Ohio, when my buddies and I head to the mountains of North Carolina on our annual bike riding adventure we easily blend right into the surroundings.
Bicyclists are every-where down in those parts and no one bats an eye at the attire other than to occasionally strain to see if the face under the helmet belongs to someone famous — and the famous do pass through the area now and again.
It’s safe to say that neither I nor most of my posse run the risk of becoming superstars anytime soon but that hasn’t kept us from enjoying the misdirected spotlight of celebrity as it reflects off of our buddy Tom who is recognized all over Asheville, as the one and only Lance Armstrong.
A few years ago, when Tom joined us for the first time, we noticed the folks seated next to us at a restaurant could not
stop staring at our table. Imagining first they were be-smitten with our col-lective charm and amaz-ing arm tans we chuckled over the attention. Later, however, when I walked past their table on my way back from the men’s room, the truth was revealed.
“Hey, um, excuse me sir,” said a blushing young lady who had obviously been goaded into asking. “Is that Lance Armstrong at your table?”
I gave a wink and pressed my finger to my lips, then returned to our table and told Tom to give them his best “Lance” look. Giggles erupted and camera shutters clicked. I’d bet more than one Facebook post that night featured a photo of Tom captioned, “Lance Armstrong was at the next table at dinner tonight!”
All of this attention was well and good back then — before the real Lance Armstrong revealed himself to Oprah and the world as the largest fraud in the history of sport. (Maybe even in the his-tory of history!)
Approaching this year’s trip south Tom, a thor-oughly stand-up kind of guy, prepared to head off any illusions that he was the real McCoy by having a yellow T-shirt printed in bold black with the message, “I AM NOT LANCE ARM-STRONG.” Somewhat shockingly the measure had the opposite effect!
As we sat at a down-town Asheville bar watching a rock-n-roll band mash out the greatest hits of the ’80s a crowd of dozens eye-balled our crew. A man across the room who seemed especially per-plexed finally stopped Tom on his way to the bar.
“I ain’t a betting man,” he said with a slow Southern drawl, “but if I was, I’d wager that Lance Armstrong would
wear himself a shirt that says ‘I am not Lance Armstrong’ just to keep people from messing with him.”
Tom just winked and walked away. Others fol-lowed with variations of the same theory.
Thoroughly entertained by the circumstance I
texted my wife back home about the goings on as the others left the bar ahead of me.
“Oh, I can’t believe that,” Kristin texted back. “No way are people that gullible.”
“Quite the declara-tion for the reigning Queen of Naiveté,” I
messaged back. Then I walked out the
door to find our “Lance” on the sidewalk posed next to a young lady who had begged him for a pic-ture. I snapped a photo of that scene and sent it to Kristin with the cap-tion, “OK. This just hap-pened. I rest my case!”

Norma Threet of Kill-buck says she used to set her vacation around the fair when she lived in Texas.
“We would try and come back every year for the Holmes County Fair,” Threet said. “My grand-daughter was here from Tampa yesterday with her baby. And my daughter that lives here was also at the fair. We had four generations at the fair yes-terday.”
“I come to the fair once a year, and it used to be to meet up with Norma for a few hours,” Sue Sturges of Wooster said. “I enjoy the fun, family atmosphere here.”
Threet says she and her family are excited about the new fairgrounds as well.
“We don’t have to worry about it flooding down there,” she said.

Summer will soon be gone and fall is on the wayIt is hard to believe
that August will soon be over and September is on
the way. I think some of my hummingbirds have already left, as I am not
having to fill my feeders so often. I am going to miss sitting on the deck with my cup of tea and watching them.
This is a busy time for county fairs and there are still several sched-uled in this area: Stark
County Fair is Sept. 1-7; Mahoning County, Sept. 2-7; Wayne County, Sept. 12-17; Ashland County, Sept. 20-26; and Tuscara-was County, Sept. 21-27. It is such a joy to see the youth working with and showing off their 4-H and FFA projects. They work hard all summer to be a part of their local county fair and to try to win that blue ribbon. It is an opportunity to see outstanding livestock and great kids in action. I will
be announcing the open Holstein Show at the Mahoning County Fair, Canfield, on Friday, Sept. 4 at 9 a.m. and the open Jersey-Guernsey shows on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 9 a.m. These shows will feature outstanding dairy cattle not only from Ohio, but also Pennsylvania. I am looking forward to seeing great cattle and greeting old friends.
The Ohio Holstein Sum-mer Sale will be held Saturday, Aug. 29 at 11 a.m. at the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Wooster. Sixty registered Holsteins will be selling. The sale will feature cows in milk, bred heifers, yearlings, calves, baby calves and embryos. A special con-signment being sent by Matthew Steiner, Pine-Tree Farms, is a red bull calf born July 10, 2015. He is sired by Swissbec Brekem-ET and has eight generations of Excel-lent dams in his pedigree
including Apple-Red. His genomic information will be available sale day. There are young cows selling already classified Very Good; consignments from Excellent and Very Good Dams; cows selling with outstanding records up to 35770 4.6 percent 1646 at 2-10; polled con-signments; consignments from show winning dams in the Ohio and National scene; high genomics; and from the well-known cow families and top sires of the breed.
This will be the first sale under the direction of Dave Gunkelman, director of Marketing and Member Services, who was recently hired on a part-time basis by the Ohio Holstein Asso-ciation. Dave is from Perrysville. He will be handling the selection of consignments and coordi-nating the Ohio Holstein

Check out local on-farm markets, roadside stands, auctions for local foods
A trend that continues to grow is local foods. As most consumers find themselves further removed from agriculture, there is interest in learn-ing more about how food is produced and where your food comes from.
Ohio Local Foods week was Aug. 9-15. Ohio State University Extension has a local foods program effort that is identifying and providing program-ming on issues related to food production, market-ing, human nutrition, eco-nomic development and others. The OSU Exten-sion local foods program encourages all of us to spend at least $10 on food produced in your commu-nity and learn more about where your food comes from and how it gets to your plate.
In Wayne County we are fortunate to have a strong and vibrant agricultural economy and infrastruc-ture. A good portion of our county agriculture production goes into food that can be directly pur-chased and consumed. Good examples of this are vegetables, fruit, honey, maple syrup, eggs, meat and dairy products. In this season, it is especially easy to purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables. In addition to the numer-ous on-farm markets and
roadside stands within the county, we have easy access to two large pro-duce auctions where local fruit and vegetable farm-ers take their produce to sale weekly. If you have not attended a produce auction, local foods week is a great time to check out what happens there. Here are the auction loca-tions, web sites and auc-tion days and times:
Mount Hope Farmers Produce Auction: http://www.mthopeauction.com/farmers-produce-auction located just west of Mount Hope on state Route 241. Auctions are held Mon-days at 11 a.m. and Tues-day, Thursday and Friday at 10 a.m.

Late summer seedingAugust provides a win-
dow of opportunity to establish a perennial for-age stand. The goal should be to get the stand seeded by the end of August. This recommendation is based on average frost dates and the time needed for forage plants to develop a root system and carbo-hydrate reserves that will allow it to overwinter.
For example, alfalfa plants must reach the
contractile growth stage, where the growing point is pulled below the soil surface, to overwinter suc-cessfully. This takes 8-10 weeks after emergence. Clover plants need to have a crown formed and grasses should be at least in the tillering stage of development before the onset of winter.
When we have extended warm falls, forage stands have been successfully established with later planting dates, however, planting date research in Pennsylvania in the mid-1990s showed increased dry matter forage yield loss the year after seed-ing for alfalfa, red clover and birdsfoot trefoil for each day planted after the recommended last plant-ing date. Grasses were less
affected by later planting dates than legumes.
In a no-till situation, minimize competition from existing weeds by applying a burndown application of glyphosate before planting. Using no-till when herbicide-resistant weeds are pres-ent creates a very difficult situation with no effective control options, so tillage is probably a better choice in those situations.
Post-emergence her-bicide options exist for alfalfa. Consult the 2015 Ohio and Indiana Weed Control Guide and always read the specific product label for guidelines on timing and rates before applying any product.
If tillage is used to pre-pare the soil for planting, a firm seedbed is needed
to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Soil should be firm enough for a foot-print to sink no deeper than one-half inch. The recommended seeding depth for forages is one-quarter to one-half inch deep. It is better to err on the side of planting shal-
low rather than too deep. Finally, give consider-
ation to making sure soil pH and soil fertility lev-els are adequate to per-mit good establishment, select high quality seed, use new, improved forage genetics and take time to calibrate the planter. For
more information about late summer forage seed-ing, contact the Wayne County Extension office at 330-264-8722.

Random thoughts, haircuts and a dip in the poolSomeone who is of
a certain stage in life emailed me a copy titled “Random Thoughts As We Age.” One of my favorites is “wouldn’t it be great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for 10 minutes and come out wrinkle free and three sizes smaller?”
Here are some other good ones:
When I was a child I thought Nap Time was a punishment …now, as a grown up, it just feels like a small vacation.
The biggest lie I tell
myself is … I don’t need to write that down, I’ll remember it.
Why do I have to press one for English when you’re just gonna transfer me to someone I can’t understand anyway?
And the one I liked the most “I don’t have gray hair. I have ‘wisdom high-
lights’.”Speaking of hair, I got a
hair cut yesterday. I went to my usual place where you go and sign in and take whoever happens to be working. The place was packed for some reason. Don’t ask me why since it was a Thursday afternoon.
There were grandpar-ents with three shaggy looking kids, two military guys and a toddler ahead of me. The toddler was crying loudly even before she got into the chair right ahead of me.
It reminded me of what my father used to say. He barbered on Saturdays instead of farming. Peo-ple used to tell him they thought he should charge half price for kids. His opinion was they should
cost twice as much since they were more challeng-ing.
I recognized all three of the girls who were cutting hair that day — in fact two of them had cut mine before — not that they would remember me.
It just worked out that I got Becky. She is pleasant and very fast. She asked me what I wanted done and I explained it to her. She asked if I wanted an inch off and that sounded reasonable at the moment. She turned me away from the mirror and started cutting. Ten minutes later I looked like a sheep that had just been shorn.
As I look back on it I should have said one-half inch. I am now walking around with a REALLY
SHORT haircut that kind of sticks up in odd places.
The good thing is it will grow. Also it will be faster to wash in the shower. And I can wear a hat when I’m outside. I just feel like most of my wisdom highlights are missing.
Shorter hair is good for my water aerobics class. So far I’ve been to three separate times and days and they are all different. Some of the same people show up in all of them. I have come to the realiza-tion most of the group is not concerned about doing the exercises cor-rectly but just attend for the socialization aspect of it.
I am still trying to get the technique down but the balance exercises
have been a challenge. The Monday, Wednes-day, Friday classes do almost all arm exercises. By the looks of most of the women in the class I would say they are either just beginners or the exercises really don’t do that much to firm up those butterfly flapping arms older women get. It doesn’t hurt to try, though.
The important thing is to just keep moving. In the afternoon when it’s been so hot, The Man of the House and I go to the pool for at least an hour. I take my Styrofoam noodle along and use it like a bicycle instead of just standing in the water. It makes me feel like I’m accomplish-ing something.

A batty bird helps to add to birthday memoriesAs someone who is
known for loving all things nature, I have a couple of basic rules that I follow. First, there is the leg rule: I don’t enjoy critters that have fewer than two legs and more than eight.
This simple standard allows me to be open to most animals on Earth
and keeps me from handling snakes and mil-lipedes.
My second rules applies to where these animals are found. As much as I love to find living things outside in their natural habitat, I simply do not like to share my home
with them. If I stumble on a deer bedded down, I don’t stomp around and play music and eat tacos there. I respect its space and hope it respects mine.
Keeping those rules in mind, or at least the sec-ond one, I just recently took my daughters and a friend to a family cabin to celebrate a birthday. Girls only! We’ll do all of our favorite things! All by ourselves! In the woods! It’ll be great! We made plans and spoke in as many exclamation points because we were just that excited.
The entire 24-hour adventure was planned. We would play games, paint pictures, cook din-ner, watch movies, and
I would sleep soundly knowing my kid and her friend had a great time and made memories to last a lifetime. You only turn 14 once, you know.
All was going as it should be, and while we dined on a meal cooked by the girls themselves, I saw something fly around the cabin and back into the bedrooms. It was in this split second of mothering genius that I informed three giddy girls there was a “bird” in the house.
“Bird in the cabin!” I yelled, and we all ran out the door onto the porch while I quickly calculated what to do next. Because I had a pretty good suspi-cion it wasn’t a bird at all,
and instead everyone’s favorite nocturnal flying mammal. A bat. And if I would have told them it was a bat, they would have gone bonkers and I would have been dealing with three non-sleeping girls in a panic all night long.
My father lives nearby and I called him. “Dad? I need you. There is a, um, a ‘bird’ in the cabin and I need help, um, removing it. Bring a net.” He came speeding up the drive and as he looked at my smirk-ing face he said, “Not a bird, is it.”
With a few flicks of a net and only a couple of shrieks from me, the bat

was released and the world was righted once again, except there was no way I would tell the girls until morning.
Over breakfast, they kept going on and on about how strange it was that a sparrow was in the house until I broke the news. “Since we all sur-vived, I can tell you now that it was a bat and not a bird.” Screams and wild dances flourished. And an unforgettable 14 birthday was complete.

We only listed the high lights with much more yet to be discovered. Good small antique items sell in the tent. Bring your chairs. Running 2-3 rings all morning. Bring a friend. Farm equipment and vehicles sell after 12:00 Noon. Good off road parking close to the action. Circle your calendar for a good one. PICTURES at www.gant-realty.com. Attention newlyweds or empty nesters! Here is your oppor-tunity to own a solid, clean, comfortable home on a nicelylandscaped lot between Winesburg and Walnut Creek! Whygo to the hassle and expense of building, when you can sim-ply move right in to this three-bedroom home on nearly anacre is such a desirable area. The owners have taken goodcare of this property and there really is nothing to do here but move in. The house features a brick exterior, threebedrooms, a nice large kitchen, full bath and living room. The living room is carpeted, and you’ll be sure to staycozy warm this winter with the help of the wood-burning stove in the living room. Just off the kitchen you’llfind a nice-sized washing/utility room. There are some good updates here, too, including replacement windows, new exterior doors and a newer water softener.Outside you will find a nicely landscaped and well maintained yard, complete with a 10x12 garden shed foryour lawnmower, garden tools, etc. Behind the home you are sure to enjoy relaxing at the elevated, private brickfirepit area. The home is accessed by a cement drive that is nice and wide, and accented with a large cut-stoneretaining wall/flower bed. The two-story barn/shop is a real bonus to this property. It is a brick/block combina-tion and offers two box stalls and a one-car garage with overhead door on the first floor, and plenty of room forhay and straw on the second floor. Also included on the second story is a 16x28 insulated shop. Topping it all offis a newer standing seam metal roof. This is a good solid building that will serve many needs. The pasture, fea-turing vinyl fence, is adjacent to this building, too. Home is connected to Northeast Gas, and there is a 12-voltsolar system that stays (house is wired). Water is provided by a shared well, and there is a private septic holdingtank. All of this sits on just over one acre of land. This really is an ideal starter or empty nester home.
