Introduction to UnitIntroduction to Unit• The goal of this unit is to inform

students of the different holidays celebrated around the world.

ObjectivesObjectives• The students will gain understanding

of different holidays celebrated around the world and the traditions that are linked with them (Cognitive).

• The students will gain appreciation for why each holiday is celebrated (Affective).

ActivitiesActivities1. As a class, we will compile a list of

everything that we know about holidays. Ex: Names of holidays and customs associated with them.

2. Students will choose a holiday and write about what their family does on that holiday (if no holiday is celebrated, students can choose a family tradition to write about). Students can write and/or draw pictures and will share with the class about their holiday.

Activities Cont’dActivities Cont’d3. Students will write a recipe for their

favorite holiday dish (if no holiday is celebrated, they can write a recipe for their favorite dish).

4. Students will be in 12 pairs/groups.Each group will be assigned a month and students will fill in all holidays for that month. Students will draw a picture to go along with a one holiday in that month.

Students can share with class about the holidays in that month, and calendars will be compiled into one classroom book.

different holiday celebrated around the world. Students will research their holiday and present their information to the class. Ex: Make a poster, or write a paper.

6. Create a Venn Diagram comparing the similarities and differences between Christmas and Hanukah.

school and design a route for carolers to follow while they sing Christmas carols.

8. Students learn different symbols related to each holiday and then create their own symbols for a holiday. (Ex: Tree-Christmas, Pumpkin-Halloween).

related to a holiday that is occurring during this time. Students will then write a letter to a classmate and use their stamp on the envelope.

10. Give students a map of the world and have them identify where each holiday being studied was originated. (Ex: St. Patrick’s Day-Ireland).
