Holiday House Tour Sponsors – Thank You!

Welcome to the 17Th Annual

HOLIDAY HOUSE TOUR

The Rotary Club of Niagara-on-the-Lake welcomes you to the 17th annual Holiday House Tour. We hope you will enjoy the variety of historic and contemporary properties, all decorated by professional designers and volunteers in keeping with the holiday season. Ticket-holders are also entitled to take advantage of special offers from wineries and other establishments in the area.

Your generous support of the Holiday House Tour has generated over $600,000 during the past 16 years. These funds have enabled the Rotary Club of Niagara-on-the-Lake to continue to support many community service projects, the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, and several international service activities. All of these are intended to make the world a better place, in keeping with Rotary’s motto of ‘Service Above Self’.

Thank you to the homeowners, decorators, sponsors, volunteers and most of all to you – the Holiday House Tour participants.

With best wishes for a happy holiday season,

1. Locust Grove 421 Hunter Road, NOTL

Circa 1820. Originally constructed by Empire Loyalist, Jacob Ball in 1782, the house was burnt down during the War of 1812. Ball’s son, George, rebuilt the house on the same site in 1820, which is immortalized in the painting by artist, Trisha Romance, ‘White Christmas’. It subsequently endured 2 additional fires and many alterations. The house was abandoned from 1985 to 1996, until the current owner began singlehanded restoration in the original Georgian Colonial style. The entrance reveals the grand foyer with the 200-year-old staircase, original floors, 2 large drawing rooms and 11-foot ceilings throughout. The upper hall is restored in the Imperial style with inlaid walnut floors, frescoed ceilings and ornate plaster work. The 3 large bedrooms showcase the bright Georgian sash windows, restored in the original manner with 130-year-old glass. Historic Locust Grove, the oldest estate in Ontario, is now a Bed & Breakfast. Peter J. Stokes Commendation 2015 Decorated by REGAL FLORIST AND GARDEN CENTRE, VIRGIL, NOTLPresented by BOSLEY REAL ESTATE

2. Fahlman House 33 Samuel Street, NOTL

Circa 2001. The architecture of Niagara-on-the-Lake inspired the design of this custom built Georgian Colonial house. The mustard coloured hardyboard house is uniquely situated allowing the veranda, second-floor balcony and kitchen to have sunset vineyard views all year long. The living room, kitchen and turreted dining room overlook the west-facing courtyard and garden. A window seat on the main floor provides more views of the courtyard. A Juliette balcony off the master bedroom accents the two-storey high living room. The cherry wood floors and wrought iron railing accent the olive tones in the wall colours and offset the warm, cream kitchen cabinetry and marbled, earth tone granite counters. The guest bathroom is highlighted by a stamped tin ceiling and Victorian roll-top bathtub. Original watercolours and wall tapestries from France form an eclectic collection of artwork, adding interest to this home’s bold colour scheme. 3. Coyne House 49 Colonel Butler Crescent, NOTL

Circa 1988. Built in Garrison Village, this home was purchased in 2008 and transformed from a family home into a dream retirement and holiday residence. Entering from the front path, one crosses an expansive front porch, a favourite place to relax with a coffee on sunny, spring mornings. Extensive landscaping began in 2009, including installation of the pool and spa, then the interior in 2011. The tiled entrance was updated and hardwood was installed throughout the main floor great room, kitchen, laundry and dining rooms. In the great room, the wall unit and fireplace were painted using the wall colour to create a more cohesive look. A door to the dining room was eliminated during the kitchen expansion to afford more pantry space. Heavy sliding doors were removed and French doors installed to provide access to the large, awning-covered rear deck, where many summer gatherings occur.

4. Berti House 285 Dorchester Street, NOTL

Circa 2010. This home was designed with the concept of blending old and new. On a lot where a 75-year-old farmhouse originally stood, the exterior façade of the main part of the house is made of limestone blocks, with wood siding at the back. Upon entering the home, marble floors in the centre hall meet hardwood in the main room. The living room is grand in appearance with 15-foot coffer ceilings and framed walls. The décor is more contemporary with classic materials and inspiration. The elegant kitchen, with a central marble topped island and open shelving, leads to a beautifully decorated dining room. Very large windows and doors in the dining room, kitchen and living room look out onto the enclosed ‘piazza’ for a cozy outdoor atmosphere. This home was acknowledged with a Peter J. Stokes Heritage Award in 2011 for fitting a home with a contemporary design in an existing Niagara-on-the-Lake old town neighbourhood.

5. Retzik House 159 Prideaux Street, NOTL

Circa 1924. Al Derbyshire’s father built this arts and crafts style house when he was living next door in the original 1883 farmhouse. Currently, Al and Vera Derbyshire live only one door away from the house. Constructed from materials obtained from a Niagara-on-the-Lake estate, this distinctive house includes extensive finished wood paneling, leaded windows, woodwork pilasters, egg and dart trim, original fir floors, and antique door and window hardware, all of which provide today’s remarkable showcase for this unique home. In 2008, the owners completely renovated an original bunkie in the backyard to a rustic style cottage. It features a white shabby chic décor with rough pine siding, large beams supporting a 10-foot ceiling and a brick fireplace. The cottage provides additional living space and the screened-in porch makes summer evenings most pleasant.

6. Burke House 33 Prideaux Street, NOTL

Circa 1970. This home, situated in the centre of historic old town Niagara-on-the-Lake, was purchased by Michael and Jill Burke in 2007. Two years later, they completed extensive exterior renovations, landscaping and added a charming garage pool cabana. As a result of the transformation, the Burkes were presented with the prestigious Peter J. Stokes Heritage Commendation in 2010 for Renovation of Compatible Design, by the Municipal Heritage Committee of Niagara-on-the-Lake. The original interior of the house has a surprisingly theatrical atmosphere, with 3 floors, vaulted ceilings and various elevations. Light-filled rooms from all sides and multiple balconies make this home a special residence for seasonal entertaining, and comfortable living in Niagara. Large windows allow the beauty of the outdoors to enter each principal room throughout the year.

It housed pumps and filter tanks supplying water to the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake until 1983. Through community effort, the building was restored and converted to a visual art centre in 1994.www.niagarapumphouse.ca

8. ANNUAL SITE McFarland House 15927 NIAGARA PARKWAY

This historic Georgian manor home was built by John McFarland and his sons. Descendants of the McFarlands lived in the house for over 140 years before it was restored by The Niagara Parks Commission and opened to the public in 1959. During the War of 1812, both British and American forces used the home as a hospital, and in December 1813, the British attack on Fort Niagara was launched from the ravine on the property.

McFarland House is one of the only structures to survive the burning of the town when occupying American forces retreated from the area, making it one of the oldest properties in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Today, McFarland House portrays early nineteenth century life in Upper Canada. www.niagaraparks.com/heritage/mcfarland

Decorated by the Garden Club of Niagara, in the style of an historic Christmas.

10. ANNUAL SITE St. Mark’s Anglican Church 41 BYRON ST.

St. Mark’s is the oldest Anglican Church in continuous use in Ontario. The building completed by 1804 was a rectangle with the outline of the chancel still visible in the floorboards. When the transepts were added in 1839, balconies were placed on two sides, necessitating the addition of the high pulpits. After the removal of the balconies and box pews in 1892, memorial windows began to be added. The original organ was in the chancel, but moved to the balcony in 1968. The two newer organs, both made by Ontario organ builder Gabriel Kney, are additions in recent years. The excellent acoustics provide a space often used for concerts. Although the history of the parish is represented in every stone, this is very much an active place of worship.

A special lunch will be served in the Church Hall from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
