In this season, while we are all trying to find the way to express our appreciation of others, we seek to find the thing apart. Not always just

an object, but a relationship of sharing, giving, and supporting our community. We have created this holiday supplement to share the unique

talents and style from our partners in the hope that relationships will be made not merely in commerce, but in appreciation and support for flavor in our community. I’d like to thank the artists, shop owners and

tastemakers that have supported and helped in this pursuit.

Putting together a seasonally balanced and festive floral arrangement can come with its challenges. The ladies at A Date with Iris know these constraints all to well and wanted to bring ease into your holiday space by offering a few tips on picking up your own cash and carry bouquets or calling in advance for some hands on design assistance.

TIPSDon’t overthink your arrangement-flowers are whimsical and meant to be played with, not forcefully styled. Their is beauty in imperfections, ya know.

Grab a stunning vase in gold or silver, and make a color play with the seasonal variety.

Accentuate the piece with small details you have around the house, vintage ornaments, or heirloom traditions placed lovingly will add a spark with meaning.

Mix and match white flocked winter birch twigs and red ilex berries, with some Dutch tulips, or Henry Bocstock peonies.

Go big and small with your inspiration. Small holiday succelent arrangemnets, can compose a simple yet beautiful table, while offering a chance for guests to see over the centerpieces, while humbly basking in the light of conversation.

Outsource when your list is full. If you get overwhelmed, call your local florist for designer setups. Many carry per stem prices with a minimum purchase or offer stylish professional pieces at reasonable rates which will reflect your personal style without the added stress.

DIRECTIONS

6 envelopes gelatin 1 c cold water 4 1/2 c sugar 1 3/4 c corn syrup 1 c water (in addition to the first water) scant 1/2 tsp salt 2 tsp vanilla bean paste 2 tsp peppermint extract

1. Bloom gelatin in a mixing bowl. To do this pour 1 cup plus 2 tbsp water in the mixing bowl, then sprinkle the 6 envelopes (or packets) on top of the water. Let “bloom” for 5-10 minutes.

2. In a heavy bottomed pot bring sugar, corn syrup, 1 cup water to 238 degrees on a candy thermometer.

3. Add salt just before the temperature hits 238 degrees.

4. Pour hot syrup slowly in a thin stream into the running mixer with the gelatin. Pour in all of the syrup on low speed, and then add the vanilla. Once incorporated, turn the mixer slowly to the highest speed. Let run for 10-12 minutes on high.

5. Meanwhile, prepare your pan. I use a 9 1/2 x 13 1/2 and it works perfectly for this amount of marshmallow batter. You could also go up to about 11 x 15 or cut it in half. Your marshmallows will be the shape of whatever size pan they fill. Spray pan well and coat with powder sugar, heavily to prevent sticking.

6. Pour into prepared pan and smooth with an off set spatula.

7. Immediately drop several drops of red food coloring on the top. Use a spoon, or an off set spatula to make the “candy cane swirl”. Draw straight lines back and forth one way and then switch and do the same perpendicular. I do this 4 times total…two sets in each direction however large your pan is. Let sit in pan for 3 hours at room temperature.

8. Gently pull back edges of marshmallows and flip onto cutting board. Flip over so your swirl is on the top.

9. Cut into thick strips, while dusting the marshmallows and knife as you go. The inside will be very sticky.

10. Cut the other direction, making marshmallow cubes. Dust fresh edges in powder sugar so they do not clump and stick together. Enjoy!

With a passion for community and retail, Allison Barta Bailey is bringing the best of the Oklahoma City metro to her growing Holiday Pop-Up Shops event, now in their third year. When asked about her inspiration to make this ambitious project come to life, she adds, “The idea to bring the Holiday Pop-Up concept came to me when I was hearing local retailers wanting to experiment with a shop downtown. My favorite thing about the Holiday Pop-Ups is that they happen every year. It’s so great to hear success stories each year about local shops growing their business and improving their livelihood thru our event. And of course, getting to mark things off of our “Holiday Pop-Ups Bucket List” like Nick Collison buying his Christmas tree from our tree lot!”

This year will host 35 local shops over four weekends in December, and we thought it would be fun to highlight some of the unique and specialized gifts our readers can expect. Over the next several pages, take a gander at the offerings in advance of each weekend’s Spotlight Vendors. From cards and stocking stuffers, to a wide variety of hats, style pieces, and lifestyle accents, these Vendors had YOU in mind when making their “nice lists.”
