Welcome

Presents

The Tabard TheaTre company

From Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Artistic Director

Holiday at the Savoy: A Tribute is our joyful way of ending 2017 and celebrating this holiday season. We have placed our show in December 1945 because that was a particular time of hope and happiness that was

filled with the expectation and anticipation of peace and prosperity, something we all seek to embrace with the same level of optimism as we begin to end one year and begin another.

In this playbill you will find three brief write-ups by three of our young performers with information about December 1945, swing dancing, and the Savoy Ballroom. Take a look!

The inspiration for this production was Tabard’s original 2010 production of Stompin’ at the Savoy. Putting a holiday spin to it with an entirely new cast has been loads of fun. Original cast member Carol Hawley has returned to choreograph the show. I’m thrilled and grateful to reunite with original Savoy co-creator Gus Kambeitz on this Savoy edition.

For this production we have two designated non-profits: Spirit of ’45 that commemorates, celebrates, and remembers the Greatest Generation; and St. Paul’s UMC Food Closet that provides food and clothing to those in need in our community.

I do hope you’ll be back with us in January 2018 for the compelling, engaging, funny, and thoughtful play about teachers, Evelyn in Purgatory. I am proud to be directing a very fine group of actors in this play that is very much about making choices, the theme of this season. Please do join us!

Until then, enjoy Holiday at the Savoy: A Tribute and may all your holidays be blessed with peace, joy, love, and health.

From Nick Nichols, Executive Director

Happy Holiday at the Savoy! We are delighted to have you with us for the world premiere of this wonderful holiday show. The holidays, of course, are a time for giving, and we have the perfect holiday gift idea for that

hard-to-please person on your list. Give the gift of Tabard Theatre! This season, we are selling Holiday Gift Packs featuring a bottle of Tabard wine (Cabernet or Chardonnay) and vouchers good for two people to see the final three shows of this, our 17th season. This all comes in a fun “Santa Basket,” beautifully wrapped, that will look great under the tree. It’s a gift that will keep on giving well into the new year. Our Holiday Gift Packs are available at concessions and you can take one home with you right after the show! Thank you for being with us; I wish you the happiest of seasons greetings, and enjoy the show!

Experience the magic. Tabard.Theatre is more than a show. Tabard.

Chloe Allen is delighted to embrace the big band style and music of the ’40s! She has appeared in several Tabard productions, including 10 in 10: 2017, A Dickens of a Christmas Mashup (Sydney), and Homeward Bound: An Orphan Train Journey (Angelina). Other recent performances include Beauty and the Beast (Chip) at Wilcox High School, The Music Man (Zaneeta) at Lyric Theatre, and Sunday in the Park with George (Louise) at Foothill Music Theatre. She’ll return to Tabard in 2018 in The Miracle Worker.

Sam Borthwick is so excited to be making her Tabard Theatre debut in Holiday at the Savoy! When she’s not performing, Sam lives her dream as a Disney Princess at Party Princess Productions. She attends Woodside High School and loves to act, sing, dance, play the piano, and read in her free time. She thanks her cast members and directors, as well as her parents for supporting her 24/7. Enjoy the show!

Mike Hugill couldn’t be more thrilled than to be back with Tabard for this amazing combination of Christmas 1945 and big band music. Mike has performed in Tabard’s Starcatcher, 10 in 10 and Babes in Hollywood. He has also performed with South Bay Musical Theatre, WVLO Musical Theatre, Tada Productions, and City Lights. Since retiring as an executive from Silicon Valley, Mike celebrated his fourth anniversary with his wife Debi earlier this year, and enjoys time with family and lowering his golf score. Thanks for joining us on this trip down memory lane!

Mohamed Ismail enjoys doing holiday-themed shows at Tabard, where he previously performed in Death Takes a Holiday. He works as an electrical engineer for his day job (which people tell him not to quit), and happily serves as a board member at Palo Alto Players. He loves ice cream and his family and traveling and dad jokes, but maybe not in that order.

Samantha Noeth Lewis is excited to be in her first show with Tabard! Recently Samantha appeared as Miss McQueen in Oklahoma City University’s production of Urinetown and on episode nine of Inside California Education entitled “Growing California’s Artists.” In addition to performing in shows, she loves to tap dance and play piano. Samantha would like to thank her parents for supporting her, and her voice teacher Sheila Townsend for encouraging her to pursue her dreams.

Layce Lynne Kieu is thrilled to return to Tabard Theatre for her second production following Memphis. She’s performed in numerous productions including the original stage play Grandpa’s Truth as Pam Curry, Big River, Women Behind Bars, Romeo & Juliet, and Bus Stop. Layce’s film appearances include 90210, Getting By, and Over the Top, and she was featured on the Showtime miniseries Madame Winston’s Secrets. Layce was a soloist on the song “What Shall I Do” for the gospel album His Love.

Dallas Miller Manson is 22 years old and in his first show at Tabard. He was born October 9, 1995, in Riverdale, Georgia, but was raised in San Jose. He has been performing since he was young, at his church and in high school, where he played The Wiz in The Wiz, Papa Ge in Once on this Island, and Seaweed in Hairspray. He’d like to personally thank Joyce Taylor: “Without you Ms. Joyce I would have never found this place. Enjoy your eternity in The Savior’s arms.”

Tyler Okunski is delighted to be appearing in his second Tabard Theatre production. He has performed in more than 20 shows, including recent credits as Boy/Peter in Peter and the Starcatcher at Tabard as well as Angel in Rent and Leaf Coneybear in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at Children’s Musical Theater of San Jose. He is a senior at Bellarmine College Prep with plans to pursue a B.F.A. degree in college.

Rochelle Roberts is making her debut performance with Tabard Theatre. Rochelle studied with the late Roger Letson, former director of the De Anza College Jazz Singers. Rochelle’s jazz quartet was invited to perform as best new artist at one of the KCSM “Jazz On The Hill” summer concert series events. Rochelle’s most recent musical performance was as a member of the 200 vocally strong Stanford Symphonic Chorus, led by Dr. Steve Sano, professor and chair of the Department of Music at Stanford University.

Irene Trapp (Vocal Director) has been with Tabard since its second season, both behind the scenes and on stage. She loves working with husband Greg, who serves behind the bar mixing your favorite drinks. Most recently in I Do! I Do!, her other shows include Love, Laughter & Linguine and It’s a Wonderful Life, plus a directing stint for The Last Night of Ballyhoo. She has two children, Ben and Rachael, both married; she hopes her next role will soon be grandma. She also loves singing at her church and gives thanks to God for being so incredibly blessed.

Cathy Spielberger Cassetta (Director) is a theatre/television veteran and entrepreneur who created/produced/co-hosted the weekly TV program Theater This Week in the 1990s before founding Tabard in 2001. She has created and/or written and directed a handful of productions for Tabard, including the most recent Homeward Bound: An Orphan Train Journey. In her non-theatre time, Cathy teaches yoga at Joint Venture Churches in Almaden and subs often at Sutras Yoga, Anchor Bay; Breathe Together Yoga, Los Gatos; and Cambrian Yoga & Cardio Dance Studio, San Jose.

Joe Cassetta (Technical Director) continues to lead Tabard’s technical team, which he has done since the company was founded in 2001. With a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an M.B.A. from Santa Clara University, Joe’s steady and skilled leadership has led to Tabard’s increased ability to explore and expand what we can do on our stage.

Carol Hawley (Choreographer) has assisted with several Tabard musicals, including Babes in Hollywood. Favorite musical appearances include 42nd Street and South Pacific (South Bay Musical Theatre); Love, Laughter & Linguine (Tabard); Anything Goes (WVLO Musical Theatre); and Tabard’s original production of Stompin’ at the Savoy. She is honored to be able to present some of Dottie Lester White’s original Savoy choreography and excited to build on that. She wishes you all a happy Holiday at the Savoy!

Gus Kambeitz (Music Director) is currently teaching music at Caroline Davis Intermediate School in San Jose, where he graduated in 1977! His prior teaching experience includes 15 years at West Valley College, five years at Santa Teresa High School, two years at Washington State University, and two years at Rancho Middle School in Milpitas. A veteran musician, he has been working consistently as a professional bassist since being hired in 1981 at Marriott’s Great America. Over the years he has traveled all over the world with Princess Cruises, performed DOD shows with King’s Entertainment, worked extensively with Gene Patrick Productions, and conducted and performed in numerous musical theater productions all over the Bay Area, including playing bass for Beach Blanket Babylon. He is also the director of Nineteen Jazz Orchestra and co-created and music-directed Tabard’s original Stompin’ at the Savoy and The Duke, the Count, and Me.

Jessica Whittemore is happy to be back singing at Tabard after serenading the moon as Grazia in Death Takes a Holiday. Other favorites include Velma in Chicago (Cabrillo Stage), Amalia in She Loves Me and Philia in ...Forum (Foothill Music Theatre), Ilse in Spring Awakening and Sheila in A Chorus Line (Sunnyvale Community Players), and Inga in Young Frankenstein (Palo Alto Players). She recently finished a contract as a research analyst at Stanford School of Medicine, and is an environmental science graduate of USC and the University of Michigan.

Charlynn Knighton (Production Manager) most recently directed Tabard’s production of A Dickens of a Christmas Mashup and one of the plays in 10 in 10: 2017. With a B.S. in music and theatre, Charlynn has worked across the U.S. and the Bay Area with Millbrook Playhouse, TheatreWorks, Broadway San Jose, San Jose Rep, West Valley Light Opera, and Portola Valley Theatre Conservatory in a variety of technical and creative positions. She will make her Tabard on-stage debut later this season in Evelyn in Purgatory. She thanks her family for their constant love and support along this journey!

Brandie Larkin (Sound Designer) earned her bachelor of science degree in communications, with a major in audio engineering, from the New England School of Communications in Bangor, Maine. She worked on the East Coast as chief sound designer/engineer for Penobscot Theatre Company for 41/2 years. Brandie moved to San Jose earlier this year with hopes to continue exploring her passion for sound design.

Robert Lewis (Stage Manager) returns after stage-managing Death Takes A Holiday and Homeward Bound and working in technical roles for most of the shows in the last three seasons. A New Jersey native and electrical engineer by education, Robert is now nearing three decades as a resident of the Bay Area (with stops in Dallas, Boston, and Tokyo along the way) and software consultant.

Rover Spotts (Lighting Designer) returns after lighting Tabard shows including Crowns; I Do, I Do!; Homeward Bound; The Best Christmas Pageant Ever; The Immigrant; and Starting Here, Starting Now. During the day he works as a network and systems engineer for a number of independent schools. He also works for the City of Sunnyvale’s theater, Sunnyvale Community Players, Lyric Theatre, 42nd Street Moon, Theatre Rhinoceros, and various other Bay Area theater companies doing set design, construction, technical directing, and lighting design.

Marilyn Watts (Costume Designer) has been Tabard’s resident costume designer since the company’s second season and designed the costumes for the award-winning Trying as well as all of the gowns in the original Stompin’ at the Savoy. Marilyn is also Tabard’s audience services director and is costumer for several theatre/dance companies. One of her big joys in life is anything related to I Love Lucy.

More About: The Savoy Ballroom

The Savoy Ballroom in Harlem opened on March 12, 1926, under the ownership of Moe Gale and the management of Charles Buchanan. As one of the first racially integrated public spaces in the United States, the ballroom created

a welcoming atmosphere for everyone who visited. Stretching an entire city block, the Savoy Ballroom could serve up to 5,000 people at once. Patrons were treated to luxurious lounges and mirrored walls, leading many to consider it the world’s finest ballroom. The space also included two bandstands, colored spotlights, and a spring-loaded dance floor, all which made the Savoy Ballroom known as “the home of happy feet.” Many dance styles originated at the Savoy, such as the Charleston, the Lindy Hop, and the Jitterbug Jive. To accompany the dancers, the ballroom hosted many famous musical guests including Chick Webb, Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Thelonious Monk. While the Savoy Ballroom closed in 1958, Holiday at the Savoy: A Tribute continues its legacy through a welcoming atmosphere filled with song and dance. — Samantha Noeth Lewis

More About: World War II

December 1945: The first holiday season in four years in America without war. That’s our setting for Holiday at the Savoy: A Tribute. On December 8, 1941, the United States declared war on Japan — following the bombing of

Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941, a date President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared would “live in infamy.” Then on December 10, 1941, Germany declared war against the United States, bringing us into the war in Europe. American men (and many women) went off to war, while many women stayed home and took hold of the U.S. workforce, proving themselves as capable aids to the war effort. America’s involvement in the war in Europe ended when Germany formally surrendered on May 7, 1945 — and on September 2, 1945, the war in the Pacific officially ended with Japan’s formal surrender. By the end of both the war in Europe and the Pacific, the United States had suffered nearly half a million casualties. Following the war, Harry S. Truman’s presidency and the creation of the United Nations seemed promising for a peaceful future for America. This show is our tribute to that spirit of commitment, change, new hope, and passion. — Sam Borthwick

More About: Swing Dance

Swing dance originated at the Savoy Ballroom in the late 1920s and increased in popularity swiftly. Before swing dance, there was the Charleston, then the Lindy Hop and Jitterbug, which morphed into the dance that most associate

with swing. Big band jazz music was a growing trend in the music culture that complemented the dance style splendidly — and with that, partner swing dance became increasingly popular in the 1940s, all the way through the 60s. Teenagers especially took swing dance to the next level. Their admiration of popular musicians such as Benny Goodman drove the passion and enthusiasm in dance seen at the time. Swing dance involves rhythm and a syncopated partner willing to lead or follow. Traditionally, the man is the leader and the woman is the follower of the pair; however, because most men in the 1940s were overseas during World War II, women often danced with each other as portrayed in our tribute Holiday at the Savoy. Overall, the Jitterbug, the Lindy Hop, the Charleston, and other dances all combined to create the iconic swing dance that brought joy to many in the 1940s. — Chloe Allen
