The new concrete waffle slab HOLEDECK is a patented system of voided slabs for buildings with big spans

between supports and a high level of services. It can be pierced all through its thickness by the building

conductions and services. This means that services in cross-sections occupy the same space as the struc-

ture itself and thus no additional suspended ceilings are required to hide them all.

HOLEDECK is especially suitable for buildings requiring multiple services as well as big or medium spans,

such as office buildings, hospitals, schools or any public, commercial or industrial building.

Why HOLEDECK...?

Because is BETTER:

ECONOMICALLY, ENVIROMENTALLY, TECHNICALLY AND AESTHETICALLY

2www.holedeck.com

Page 3: Holedeck Brochure 2013

ECONOMICALLY

• The weight of the waffle slab itself is reduced as well

as the consumption of concrete, improving structure

behauviour (fig. 01)

• Holedeck system reduces consumption of con-

crete, and employs the same amount of reinforce-

ment steel / time for completion as a waffle slab.

(fig. 02)

• A total of 30-50cm are saved per floor thus re-

ducing all the corresponding vertical building

elements. This implies a 10-20 per cent saving in

façades and indoor enclosures as well as a 10-20

per cent reduction in pillars and load bearing

walls. (fig. 03)

• Building elements are saved. Some elements

can be fully eliminated, such as suspended cei-

lings and technical floors. Some services can be

directly supported by the concrete slab ribs thus

allowing for the removal of auxiliary bearers.

• (fig. 04)

fig. 01

Page 4: Holedeck Brochure 2013

ENVIROMENTALLY

• An additional floor can be obtained every 5

stories thus making it possible to significantly in-

crease the total surface built while maintaining the

same volume.

• The energy losses in the building are reduced

by 10-20 per cent, proportionally to the reduction

of enclosures

• Plenum distribution is possible, improving

energy efficiency in the ventilation system by

using the thermal inertia of the whole mass of con-

crete comprised by the slab.

• HOLEDECK offers easy-cleaning by plenum

ventilation. Thanks to registrability, it’s excelent

against sick building syndrome

• It is fully adpted to bioclimatic air conditioning

systems such as the Canadian wells geothermal

system(in fact this system has been installed in

Logytel building) or radiant floor.

Page 5: Holedeck Brochure 2013

TECHNICALLY

• Thanks to the geometry of the waffle slab,

HOLEDECK has an excellent reverberance time

perfomance. It reduces reverberance time by 1/5

compared to a flat concrete slab. No additional

acoustic absorption is needed to fulfill with CTE

DB HR regulations.

• Services registrability is improved as no building

works are required and activity does not need to

be stopped either. Therefore maintenance or re-

configuration costs are cut and no hindrance is

caused to any other activity.

• Due to its modulated character this system is

adapted to accept installations and elements spe-

cifically designed for standard modulated ceilings

of 60-cm modules. The system can be adapted to

conventional geometries and modulations

• With HOLEDECK it is possible to cover big

spans with a reasonable edge: it is suitable for

big spans ranging from 10 to 15 meter high with a

50-60cm slab edge

• It offers fire resistance thanks to the dimen-

sions of its ribs, so no additional fire protection is

required as it is the case with steel-structure fra-

meworks.

Page 6: Holedeck Brochure 2013

AESTHETICALLY

• HOLEDECK slab reminds others of the internal

morphology for bones.

• Thanks to the geometry of the waffle slab, ser-

vices are not visible but easily accessible though.

This makes the suspended ceiling unnecessary

while allowing for a complete registrability of servi-

ces; so it is perfect for installing the whole electric

power distribution throughout the ceiling. It is pos-

sible to keep an aesthetic and expressive structu-

re with fair-faced concrete by adding dyes to the

concrete mass or just painting it afterwards.

• HOLEDECK is set up in a similar way to other

voided flat plate slabs. It provides greater freedom

of design for the plant geometry and pillar placing.

It is modulated according to a 80cm interaxis so it

is dimensionally interchangeable with any voided

two-way flat plate slab system with similar featu-

res.

PRODUCT DIMENSIONS

The standard Holedeck module is 80x80 cm in horizontal layout, 45 cm high plus 5 to 10 cm for com-

pression layer. The span for this slab can be 8-14 m in both directions without beams ( we recommend not

more of 12 m, in order to make the reinforcement process easier) .A 25x25m square plan structure would

just need a column in the center.

Pieces are assembled progressively, alternating with the steel reinforcement setup.

Once the casting molds have been laid out, the lower steel bars are assembled, followed by the windows

and, finally, the upper steel bars; just as it would be done with a conventional two-way system.

As for the lattice slab (with vertical borings), the upper lids of the casting molds are last placed. The

assembling process is quite similar to that of any two-way voided waffle slab, with a comparable calculation

and consumption of steel reinforcement.

The system’s patent provides feasible variations that enable one-way precast systems which would

require the use of bearing beams. It also includes some other casing systems such as non-recoverable or

flammable casting molds.

The casing system comprises 4 pieces:

Piece 1: Casting mold piece with insertion rails

Piece 2: upper lid to create lattice slab through upper opening

Piece 3: closed window for edge solutions

Piece 4: window to communicate casting mold

Page 11: Holedeck Brochure 2013

As abovementioned, the system may use specific service systems (custom-made systems) or just

standard systems as the ones designed for 60-cm-modulated ceilings.

In addition to the gaps in the two directions of the horizontal plane which enable an isotropic layout along

the whole plane of the slab, the system can be not only easily accessed from below but also from above

with a system of raised floors or small passing-pieces for cables (as long as the acoustic and fire regulations

allow for).

Where required, air is distributed through diffusers likewise embedded in the hollow edge of the slab.

The system admits conventional air conditioning indoor units of 60x60 modules.

The lower part of the waffle slab may be left uncovered or a removable suspended ceiling may be used.

Air may be distributed through conventional semi-flexible conduits or through a plenum system, which re-

quires a sealed suspended ceiling and removable locks in lateral windows.

Electrical services/ telecommunications

Therefore, mechanical services, cables, wiring and electrical supply can be embedded in conduits through

the floor or inside a system of removable flat plates.

It is likewise possible to place them into a suspended ceiling and thus they would be completely accessible

by removing it.

Installation of radiating systems

Radiating systems or even cold ceiling systems may be installed underneath the floor included in the com-

pression layer of the slab.

GARAGES

HOLEDECK allows high-volume air extraction by plenum. Therefore is suitable for garages and other indus-

trial buildings with high ventilation needs.

HOLEDECK offers easy-cleaning by plenum ventilation. Thanks to registrability, it’s excelent against SBS

(Sick Building Syndrome)
